message 1: by Keara (new)

Keara (kearachristine) D:< I'll save mine for later... again. :]

message 2: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Utter tripe, haven't read a more draggy, whingy book in my life.

message 3: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (Smiley1881) I really liked the series. Seems like people either love or hate it.

message 4: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) yeah it does have a way of polarising views, mind you, I have nothing against people liking the books. Far as I'm concerned, she's penned a very popular series, so well done her.:)

message 5: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) Gah, twilight.
Ugh.
I liked the first and the second book a lot, the first time I read them. The third was allriht, and the fourth was crap. I mean, c'mon? WHO gets everything they want? Noone. It was a good series, back when noone knew it existed. I never liked Edward or Bella much though, Bella was always whiney, needu and clingey - Edward was too perfect, and always depressed, unable to joke, possesive, chouvanistick and clingy.
Twilight also teaches girls that looks matters a lot, it's all right to fall in love with the most beautiful guy you see, without knowing him at all. It teaches us that it's all right to leave your friends behind, and only use them when YOU need it.
Also, it's not really realistic. NO fight, NO deads, and a girl who gets EVERYTHING? Bah.

message 6: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) that's why it's fantasy Emma, Twilight is a stereotypical teenage girl fantasy:p but that doesn't mean it actually is every teenage girls fantasy:)

message 7: by Lynda (new)

Lynda Not my cup of tea. I tried, but I gave up after the second book. Very immature viewpoint.

message 8: by Keara (new)

Keara (kearachristine) Bella was the thing that killed it for me. "I'm so selfless 'cause I'm moving for my dad. I have to take care of him because I'm so mature and he's pitiful! I'm boring and uninteresting, but EVERYBODY wants to be my friend because I'm new and exciting!"

My English teacher actually taught us about the definition about melodramatic today. "Typically, the love stories are as follows; Boy meets girl, the get to know each other, they fall in love. A soap-opera-ish piece of literature eliminates the second step. Suddenly, it becomes; Boy meets girl, minor details to fill space, BAM! THEY ARE IN LOVE AND GETTING MARRIED - EVERYTHING IS PERFECT! People like simple romance because it's a fantasy - basically love at first sight."

I love my teacher oh so much. XD

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree about the 'love at first sight' thing. It's a romantic concept, but there's no way you can know someone well enough to truly love them at first sight. I think it takes looking deeper, getting to know someone, their fears and hopes...before you can truly love them. And with Twilight, Bella was willing to die and become a vampire after only knowing Edward a few months. It just sets a bad example for teenage girls, who read this and think, "Wow, I want to be just like Bella." (Meaning, they are going to throw away the rest of their life for a guy they hardly know and who might not even be around in a few months).

message 10: by Keara (new)

Keara (kearachristine) THANK YOU.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha. :) Glad to be of service.

message 12: by Lynda (new)

Lynda It sounds like you have a great English teacher.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

That's what I was thinking. :)

message 14: by Keara (new)

Keara (kearachristine) xD He's incredible - plus he's a triplet and a stand-up comedian. Also an MC and can do kick-butt imitations.

message 15: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) Woolfie wrote: "that's why it's fantasy Emma, Twilight is a stereotypical teenage girl fantasy:p but that doesn't mean it actually is every teenage girls fantasy:)"

Yeah, but so is Harry Potter, and THAT'S one hell of a realistic book. As an 11-year old, I found myself waiting for my letter. It was hard not to believe that the Harry Potter world was real, whereas it was impossible to even consider the Twilight world.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree Emma. Rowling did such an amazing job, you could really feel like Hogwart's was real. The books were fantastic, and really did make me believe magic could possibly exist. :)

message 17: by Rex (new)

Rex Haha. I actually liked Twilight, I still like it, though I'm quite aware it's nothing ground breaking. I don't care if it's not uber serious and not up to steam with other's expectations. I don't get why everyone gets so worked up over this, fangirls and haters a like.

Why do I like Twilight? Because it's (as someone abve said) "a sterotypical teen fantasy" and I was thirteen when I read the first book. I was the perfect demographic and not picky about what I read. I liked it--still like it--because it's silly and over the top and reads like a fairytale. It's for when I wanna take a break and read something light, it's for shits and giggles.

Having said that, I'm really tired of everyone turning their nose up at me when I tell them I happened to have read and liked the books. If you didn't like it, that's fine, I really don't care and can understand why it doesn't appeal to you. But don't rag on those who DO like it and act like we're ALL those obnoxious fangirls who wear those ugly shirts with Patterson's face on them. Cause we're not. >:(

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Agent Six,
I enjoyed various aspects of Twilight. My only main complaint (other than the glittering) was Bella, who just wasn't a very good main character. She forgave Edward too easily, and she ditched Jacob after he'd mended her heart. I dunno. Maybe it's just me, but I had reservations about Bella...not so much with Twilight. As you said, you read it to escape, and that's what fantasy novels are supposed to do, help you escape. I agree that, when I read Twilight the first time, I really did live in Forks for a while :P. So, I don't *hate* Twilight...but I don't like Bella as a character.

I wouldn't turn my nose up at you :).

message 19: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) As usual, I agree with Candace

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm just a very agreeable person :P.

message 21: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) True that

message 22: by Rex (new)

Rex Thanks...Heh, I think I probably sounded a bit too intense there, but I get into stuff I write....

Oh don't worry, I have plenty of my own misgivings about the book. Bella IS too forgiving and Edward is FAR to controlling/moody. But actually, in the big picture, I don't really mind it. I actually like that the characters are flawed like that. I always think "Well if those two screw ups got such a happy ending maybe the other crazies of the world (me) can get a happy ending too." :)

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha, that's cute. And yeah, if they can make it work, there's nothing saying the readers can't, too. :)

message 24: by Keara (new)

Keara (kearachristine) I read the first book 13 times... I try not to get annoyed with fangirls. :D

message 25: by Rex (new)

Rex @MONSTER: Hehehe. It's okay to get annoyed with the really obnoxious ones.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't read it nearly that many times...but I'd be lying if I said I only read it once.

message 27: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) I loved this series! Only coz of Edward. It has sum pretty lame stuff but the love in it is great... and edward is just hot.

*drools*

message 28: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) Gaaah!
*Shivers*
Edward. Cant stant the guy, never could. He so depressing. Okay, so maybe he's extremly beautiful in the books, but he's still creepy and Gaaaah.

- And even so, Robert Pattinson dosen't play the role at all good enough! He ain't Edward.

message 29: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) I think Stephanie's characters are really cool. Not in loks, but the powers n all.

message 30: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) I dunno. Sure, the supernatural powers were pretty cool, but a lot of the characters were crap.

Edward was depessing, possesive and creepy.

Bella was whiney, needy, clingy and generally childish. She also managed to get good grades without studying at all. And she's a bad friend.

Carlisle was just weird. He was a vampire who didn't want blood, and who was so good, and never did anything wrong, never even killed a person. Noones that perfect.

I loved Jakob and Seth. They were both awesome. Actually, most of the 'Wolves were pretty awesome.

message 31: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) I disagree abt edward, but the rest cool.

alice was my fave character. and rosalie *thumbs up*

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Actually, Carlisle was one of my favorite characters. I wish they had done more on him. I would have loved to read about his time living in Volterra with the Volutri. I thought that would have been a really interesting spin-off.

I loved Jacob :) and Seth was adorable.

message 33: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) I liked Leah too =) I think most of her characters are really good

Emma (zeeberg) I', getting the impression that you don't care much for twilight? :)

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments I tried to laugh at that but it's bot really funny :)

You can't judge a book by what people say or the movie. Twilight is well written and good :)

message 37: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) How do you know she hasn't read the book?

And I have to disagree. I don't think Twilight is well-written and good. I don't think it's the most horrible book I've ever read either, but it has nothing to offer, nothing that makes it as good as some claim. It is not very well thought out. It is not realistic, and even fantasy books should be realistis in their own way. The happy endning is too much and ruins everything. Things happen without reason or with very bad reason. The characters aren't good and the morals of the book are bad.
Oh, and the vampires glitter.

But other than that it was okay.

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments LOL!!

Idk, I just really liked everything :D

message 39: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) Yeah well, I appreciate a good book, and Twilight was not one of them. And that's ot saying that it was the most horrible thing EVA'!! But for me a good book involves
* A somewhat realistic and believable world
When there's a war, there're actual casualities.
* Doubt
If there are two love interests, there is also the readers doubt about who she'll choose.
* A thought-out story
Things happen for a reason, and not just because.

These are just some of the many examples that makes a book good to me. And sadly, twilight didn't reach the standards.

There were no casualitites whatsoever and everybody had a happy ending, not to mention that very was aboslutely no doubt about who Bella would end up with, Jake never even had a chance. And of course we've got the things-happen-for-no-reason-and-no-further-explanation-is-given.

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments Oh.. What made you read the whole series?

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

20 Reasons why I hate twilight:
1) It's poorly written. Stephen King can back me up on SMeyer being a horrible writer.
2) Those are not vampires, they're sparkly fags. And by fag, I don't mean gay, I mean fag.
3) Edward is a 107 year old virgin. Can you say pathetic?
4) Bella has no redeeming qualities; she's a very weak main character. Physically she isn't strong. She can't run away right even; she trips too much. She's not smart, either, she's almost brain dead (come on, how long did it take her to figure out Edward was a vampire again?). She's not very pretty. She's not nice; she treats her friends horribly, and wants nothing to do with normal boys who aren't monsters. Somehow, everyone loves her, despite all this, which only makes her even more dislikable.
5) There is no plot. Or, if there is, it was so small I missed it.
6) Edward is abusive and a stalker.
7) Bella has absolutely no opposition to Edward stalking her. (In Buffy the Vampire slayer, Buffy tells Angel that girls don't like being stalked. She actually had brain and knew that stalking isn't hot, even though Angel is. She doesn't like it when Spike stalks her, either. She's a slayer and even she's normal enough to know that stalking isn't a turn on.)
8) Love at first sight isn't real. I know a lot of other stories use this, but you can't know a person's soul, who they really are, by just looking at them. Sure, you can get some idea's that may or may not be right, but you can't actually know deep into that person.
9) Jacob never had a chance. There was no second in the books when I thought she might have possibly picked him.
10) The book contradicts itself. First, vampires can't have children because the sperm is dead or something. Then, Bella ends up pregnant. Okay, pick a story and stick to it, Smeyer! Either they can or can't have children, not both!
11) She almost kills herself after they break up after going out for like a month. Great family values you're teaching there, Smeyer.
12) Bella's a little brat to her father.
13) It's extremely boring. I don't know how I even got through them…
14) The entire idea for the series, a vampire and human in love, is extremely cliché.
15) The fan girls of the series are ridiculous.
16) The movies are just talking heads. They're, if possible, as boring as the books.
17) The movies cast terrible actors/actresses. Kristen Stewart never smiles and always wears the same expression, Robert Pattinson is ugly with all that horrible make up on, Taylor Lautner has spray on abs.
18) When Bella becomes a vampire she's basically invincible with her super shield. There's no real battle or challenge.
19) It approves of pedophilia.
20) There's a Disney ending. Everyone's happy, no one's suffering, and everything works out for everyone. (Both Jacob and Edward get someone, along with all the original couples still being together and alive.) All the bad guys are gone, and good wins at no real cost.

message 42: by Annemarie (new)

Annemarie Carlson (annielawlz) | 470 comments You know, I would argue that people who hate Twilight are infinitely more annoying than people who love it to death.

I am completely neutral when it comes to Twilight.

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments Ha Juliet. Me too :)

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments And Bella is supposed to be the way she is.

And it didn't take her too long to figure out

message 45: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) I don't hate Twilight. I simply think it is not as well-written as some claim. And I read the series because the first book was actually pretty alright. Also, there is a certain something about Twilight that captures the reader momentarily. But later, when looking back on the story, I could see the flaws. Though I never liked Bella nor Edward. Bella was whiney and clingy and Edward was possesive and creepy. Plus he glitters in the sun.

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments That's all just a part of the story. It's supposed to be like that. If the characters werent like that the story would change.

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

Plus, stalking is NOT romantic!

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

Vampire are creatures of the darkness. Monsters. Not sparkly fairies (no offense).

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments Only in the light!

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, but vampires are supposed to BURN in the sun.
