spoiler-ish (all this stuff gets revealed within the first 10 pages, but put a warning just in case)

i'm halfway. So far so good, but i'm not liking either love interests. I don't understand the connection between Callie and Shay (Maybe shay because callie rescued him, but no idea why callie cares so much for him), and Ren is a manwhore and I hate the way he tries to force Callie into making out with him.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished it. To me it was okay. I enjoyed the plot, but the whole book was mostly focused on the love triangle, which I did not like. I know the author wanted us to root for Shay, but the way he acted reminded me of a little brother. I just did not understand the attraction between Callie & Shay. Especially with Ren standing right there! In the beginning I really did not like him (he acted kind of like a butthole), but then he got hotter and hotter.

Also it has a HUGE cliffhanger, so I will be reading the next book, because I have to know what happens

Cover is superduper gorgeous

message 6: by Lynnea (new)

Lynnea (lalasbooks) I am loving this book.... I completely agree with Zuleika, I like Ren and I know that the author wants us to like the relationship building with Shay but he bugs me. I haven't finished the book yet, but unless the personality completely changes for Ren I think I am going to be upset with the ending.

Shay is a fling and Ren is the real deal, in my opionion.

Good to know. This is another one I'll have to buy since my library doesn't have it.

message 11: by Tya (new)

Tya | 846 comments So, I loved this book. What are the spoiler policies here? I have theories people!
I think the problem that I had with the Ren/Calla/Shay triangle is with Calla/Ren there was actually a relationship there. From the time Ren is introduced you know that he and Calla have history and chemistry. Shay, on the other hand is just a convenient bit of exposition. If he and Calla had a relationship it had to have happened in between scenes or something. Whenever Calla was with him the sole purpose seemed to be to explain to the audience about the Guardians and the history of the wolves. Unless they were making out. Their relationship came from nowhere and just seemed forced. I don't think that Calla loved him. I think that she loved the freedom to choose and she wanted to choose someone who wasn't a giant manwhore. That scene when Ren and Calla dance together and he asks her if she'll ever love him? I think that if they had a chance to talk a bit longer after that she would have completely forgotten the very existence of dull ol' Shay.
I also think that when book 2 comes out, since Shay won't be used just to explain things to the audience there will be more opprotunity to build him as a character and not a stock love interest. Right now I feel like we know things about Ren and and about Ren and Calla's relationship and we still don't know anything about Shay. Except that he thinks Calla is hot. But apparently their in love? Or. Something.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments ****Spoilers****

I just finished and found myself really liking Ren way more than Shay. Ren seemed more real, and not so weak. I really hope that Shay grows into his identity more in the next book.

I do think that it felt like Shay and Calla were in too deep way too fast without spending any real time together to establish a connection. Sure, there was the whole blood exchange/she saved his life at the start, but I didn't pick up on the "love at first site" or "soulmate" vibe from it.

Shay sounds like a girl name too, which threw me off. For the first half of the book it would mention him and it would take me a second to realize that it wasn't a girl that walked into the room.

Adriana (adrinori) I just started this book today and so far i am loving it.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments ***Spoilers*** Kind of?

Shay and Calla were unbelievable. There just was not enough character build up for me to feel like they'd fallen in love.

Ren had history with Calla, and he had his moments. But he was a little man whore. I can't dig a love interest who new he was going to "marry" Calla, and the whole time his playing the whole Field sampling the goods out there.

Tya | 846 comments ****Spoilers****

At first, I couldn't stand Ren and his man whoring ways, but then I was thinking about it and I feel really bad for Ren. Not to pardon his bad behavior, and I'm warning you now I have put *waaaaay* too much thought into this, but I think that Ren's slutting it up around school was just him looking to make a connection. So, my theory! We know that his dad is a douche, and his mom is dead. We also know that Ren has known his entire life that he's one day going to be the leader of the new pack. I think that while Calla was friends with her packmates, none of them really respected her as leader, despite her alpha-ness. Ren's relationship with his pack was different. I think that he's been carrying this load, alone, for his entire life. His packmates aren't his friends, their his responsibility. He wasn't allowed to be around Calla until the time for the union, and he it wasn't like he could be friends with the Keeper kids or the human guys. The only option that he had left for companionship was the human girls. And I think that he probably thought it was pointless to have a relationship with these other gals because he's promised to Calla so he's taking what he can when he can get it to not feel so...alone. I got *all* of that, from one scene. When Calla first found out about Mason/Nev and Mason/Jerk-keeper fellow, and she found out that Ren had known all along and how broken up he seemed that there's nothing he can do about it. She kept pushing him away and he seemed eager to lean on her, to start a partnership with her so that neither of them had to bear the weight alone. Waaaay. Too. Much. Thought. I also think that if Calla had just known that Ren wasn't wanting to be with her just because of the union, but because he actually wanted to she wouldn't have been so eager to fall in whatever with Shay. Who is lame. And annoying.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments I just really like Ren. Those two won't end up together from what it looks like, but Shay was so annoying.

Did anyone else almost feel like he was borderline crybaby?

OH...and what was up with him always trying to talk to Calla when she was hanging out with someone else??? He was always butting in! Usually, it works better if you try to get into a conversation with someone when they're not already engaged in one. I find it hard to believe that she never had a moment here or there where she was walking to a class alone. At least try to catch her on the way out of the classroom or something.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments That made me laugh. :)

It might have been somewhat hot if he was acting alpha male.

Shay was the wimpiest hero I've seen in a long time.

I still liked the book though!

message 19: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) Library finally got it in! I think I spent a long time just admiring the pretty cover. I was so bummed because it came in on Veteran's Day and the library was closed, what a tease, grr. End rant and on to the book.

About 150 pages in and loving it. Very curious about Shay and the tattoo, who is he and why is he important...
So far feeling Ren a little more than Shay, but we'll see what happens.

message 20: by Tya (new)

Tya | 846 comments I thought that we were supposed to think that Shay was, or was going to be Alpha...but he seemed more like a pain in the butt.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Tya, I love your theory and completely agree.
And I'm so glad you guys agree that Shay is...not good. Tons of people have described him as 'dreamy' and 'perfect' and I was like...really? Are we reading the same book?

~Team REN 4ever~

message 22: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) **maybe spoilers**

Tya - When I was reading it, I totally thought Shay would end up an Alpha too. I don't know how being an Alpha works, and whether or not Calla would have known right off the bat, but maybe there's still that possibility to be revealed later??

In my made up world, Calla is just attracted to Shay because he represents freedom and the ability to choose, but she'll realize later that Ren is a better match, even if the pairing was originally chosen for her.

And on a side note - for a girl who's supposed to remain pure, she managed to kiss Ren and Shay pretty much every time she saw either of them!

Vivian (_vivian) For those who want more of Nightshade - there's a pdf prequel on Amazon for free. Haven't read it yet, but I think it's at least partly told from Shay's POV, so maybe it will help us understand and like him a bit more?

Yeah that was part of the insane marketing that they did for the book. Like they gave Shay a facebook page and people could respond to him while he ~solved a mystery. And then the author wrote the prequel based on those interactions. I watched/skimmed the videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/shaydoran and they hired this guy who is not a good actor and also not very cute :/ So maybe I hated Shay a little even before reading the book haha

Adriana (adrinori) I just finished it today and i really enjoyed it, i actually thought that Shay was a bit of a dork LOL and i wanted Calla to end up with Ren cus he was more tempting and a little bit of a bad boy,but it seems like she could not really choose either so she had to kiss them both i think she chose Shay because of the fact that he represents freedom and she does not have that..cannot wait for the next one...

Jami (gurugoodwin) | 53 comments I just finished this one and it was great. I actually started reading it, then went back and read the prequel, which got me more interested and less annoyed with Ren and the rest of the gang. I must say that the mystery was super easy to figure out and I just left me on the edge of my seat until they figured it out. Now I need to read Wolfsbane, but don't want to wait until next summer....aghhhhh

message 35: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Neither did I.

I am on page 127 out of 298. It seems kind of obvious what is going to happen with Shay. Or why he is there anyway. I don't get it though. This book is kind of confusing at first.

message 36: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I finished. I have to say I really loved the book even though some things bugged me. There wasn't any part of it that I felt was too long or drawn out. I loved the pack interaction and the way the two packs were merging together. The characters were great, all of them.

Shay could have used a bit more development though. I just wasn't feeling the draw to him. I could have understood it more if Calla didn't have amazing chemistry with Ren. If he was a creep and she was turned off by him then I could understand her connection to Shay. I really, really loved Ren. He was the best part of the book. I think this is my favourite shifter/were book (unless you count the Kate Daniels series).

***SPOILERS***

So the fact that Shay was going to be sacrificed at the union was seen from a mile away. Same with the whole Keepers real interests maybe not being what they seem. I still was very interested in finding out more about the prophecies and histories. Ren's mother being killed by the Keepers came unexpected to me, but I wasn't shocked. These Keepers really need to be brought down.

I was kind of hoping Shay would die so Calla and Ren could be together. I knew it wasn't going to happen, but still I hoped. I figured Ren would stick by Calla and their pack could have ran off to find the truth and eventually bring down the Keepers. I guess they will all still be a part of it, but it just won't be Ren and Calla like I wanted. Maybe something will change in one of the later books. I feel horrible for Ren. He was a bit of an ass at the beginning, but he really started showing his concern and love for Calla once the Union was coming upon them.

I agree. I am hoping that Shay will have to sacrifice himself at some point. But, then it might seem that Calla is settling for Ren, and I want her to truly love him. I thought that maybe somebody new could come into the picture for Ren (maybe a Seaker?), but I really love the chemistry between Calla and him.

I guess we will have to read and find out!

I am loving this so far. I am not team Ren though. I think Calla wants to feel special to a guy and Ren has messed around with everyone. Makes sense to me.

message 44: by Jess (new)

Jess | 120 comments **Spoiler**

Ok, I can understand why the comments were made about Ren and Shay. I felt that she rushed the relationship with Shay making them fall in love. It was off because while this happened the chemistry increased between Ren and Calla. Doesn't make sense. If she had felt uncomfortable with Ren's advances it would have made sense. I know a lot of it was to try to push Shay away... I don't know.

I wasn't interested in about a 1/4 of the book.

message 47: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments So I finally got this book, ended up with the audio book first, and if you are a fan of them this was a good one.

I liked the book but was super annoyed that with this new world (which I really liked) the author built it wasn't explained for so long. I think things would have been better had they been explained earlier.

I am torn on Ren, he did manage to worm his way around to me liking him. I didn't care for his whoring ways, but do agree to what you all explained here. What I did like was that he thought ahead and wanted to join the packs early. While he didn't know any better, he was doing what he could to make things easier for him and Calla. I also think he reached a point where he knew he had to "court" her, that things would work better. I also think he realized that by seeing his whole life how is father was.

Shay was so blah for me. I could see where the author was going with this. I did like how he caused everyone to question things. Just because they were always done that way, doesn't mean it needs to stay that way.

Sometimes I really like Calla, and others she annoyed me. She is an Alpha, but there were so many times where she was passive and just went with the flow, didn't think for herself.

I HATED the ending, cliffhangers drive me nuts. But I was already planning on reading the next one, this just means that I will try to get it faster.
