Emma (zeeberg) I'm against it. There's no crime so horrible that a person should delebriatly be killed. Yes, I know there're some people who've done horrible things, and deserve it. But then we wouldn't be any better ouselves, would we? Also, isn't it taking the easy way out? Bein executed? I'd rather see people like Saddam Hussein take their life-long punishment, instead of just being killed. Now I probably made myself sound like I want them tortured; that's not the case. I don't think totouring people should be allowed either. But back to Death Penalty; I vite no.

What do you think? And why?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Actually, I’m for the death penalty, but there should be absolutely no doubt about the person's guilt. If three or more people see a person walk into a store and murder a bunch of people…yeah, they should get the death penalty. That having been said, I am a big supporter of life, but if someone does something that horrible, well, they need to be punished.

I don't necessarily think it would be taking the easy way out. There are some people who just don't deserve to be on the planet. But that's just my opinion.

message 3: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) Hmm. I disagree. I can see no good reason to kill a person. Besides the fact that it states a bad example, it's also hypocritical against our own laws. Besides that, it could very well start an uproar. Imagine some big leader being executed. All the followers woulf be so pissed, it'd be even worse than it was when he or she was alife.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

That's true. But I'm talking more along the lines of murderers. Honestly, if someone came into my house and murdered my husband...I'd want them to have the death penalty...but I'm also a big fan of movies like The Punisher, Taken, and Law Abiding Citizen. It's just what I would do in that situation.

message 5: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) Yeah, I'd feel the same way of course. But it's still not something I think could in any way excuse killing another human being. I don't think there's any justifyin murder, however much the person deserves it. And I'd rather have someone I really hated rotten in prison for the rest of their lives, knowing that they missed out on their life. Also, they might not be, uhm... Well. There's usully a reason behind the crimes people make. It might not be a good reason and it sure as helll dosen't justify killing. But death Penalty; that's just another way of saying Legal Murder. And I'm against that with all my heart.

Who knoes though. Maybe I'll change my mind. Not likely though.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, I'm not looking to change your mind. :) I just like discussing it.

message 7: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) Oh, I know. My mind is not easy to change anyway. I mean, I'm open for new ideas but I'm incredibly stubborn.

message 8: by Lauren (new)

Lauren I'm not sure on this. I think some people should be sentenced to death if the crime is bad enough and there is no doubt the done it, but i also think that maybe suffering in jail for the rest of their life is a worse sentence than getting off easy with death.. but i dont really know =/

message 9: by Emma (last edited Oct 20, 2010 07:12AM) (new)

Emma (zeeberg) Yeah, I see peoples point when they say they're for death penalty. I even understand how it can seem like some people deserves dead. But, and I'm not trying to push anyone into changing opinions, if you think about it, where is the line between Death Penalty and murder? Murder is to know that you are killing someone. For me, that's against my moral as well as the law. In my opinions, noone should be murdered, whatever horrible things they did. Sure, I can dream about putting people like Hitler (if he was still alife and hadn't cowardly killed himself) in one of his own frikken camps, but would I vote for it, had I the chance? No. Because it's just wrong.

message 10: by Lauren (new)

Lauren I see your point, and thats why i'm not sure on this subject. Me and my friends talk about this sometimes and iam still so unsure. I have also watched alot of real life crime shows that show you people on death row that arent 100% guilty. So this makes me think that there shouldnt be a death penalty. Also because as i said i think it would be a worse punishment to make them suffer in prison the rest of their lives. But i still have a feeling that agrees with death sentences because when you hear about horific murders on he news it seems like thats what they deserve to be honest =/. But i can i see your point totaly.

Gatorman Emma (Soul of sunshine) wrote: "Yeah, I see peoples point when they say they're for death penalty. I even understand how it can seem like some people deserves dead. But, and I'm not trying to push anyone into changing opinions, i..."

I'm new to the group and have been following some of these discussions with interest (and at times disgust at the way people respond to others in what is supposed to be a "debate"). Emma, I don't think that the majority of people who support the death penalty would disagree that it is murder, but it is classified as "justifiable murder" based on the circumstances of the punishment handed down by a court of law. Another example of justifiable murder is when you kill someone who poses a serious threat of bodily harm to yourself or others such as a family member. I understand and respect your position on the death penalty and murder in general and I am curious as to your opinion (and others) on whether you think it is morally wrong to kill someone to defend yourself or a loved one.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree, Gatorman. I support the death penalty. And if someone was posing a threat of bodily harm to me, you better believe I'd whip out my Glock without hesitation. But, I also think there should be absolutely no doubt about the guilt of the perpetrator.

message 13: by Lauren (new)

Lauren I think defending yoursef is acceptable, if someone has to die it should be the crazy guy attacking people i think..

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Yep, yep. If I can pull a trigger faster than a guy can pounce, I'm gonna do it. But, then again, I'm 4'10", and would literally stand no chance if I tried to defend myself with my fists.

message 15: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Ha ha Candace. Well, apply for that pistol permit when you turn 21 ;-)

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Actually, I already have one...and a Glock...and a Kimber 1911. I'm strapped all the time ;).

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, I'm 24, I'm just extremely vertically challenged. :P

message 18: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Nice. I have a Glock 27. 1911 is going to be my next pistol purchase.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Gosh, I feel foolish; I can't remember which Glock I have. It's small (my size :P). The Kimber is really good. It has a grip safety and laser sights. I love it. I don't leave the house without it.

message 20: by Nathan (last edited Oct 20, 2010 02:49PM) (new)

Nathan 1911 is a big gun to carry. Of course you probably tote it, which guys can't do. What caliber is your Glock?

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, I have a special compartment in my purse for it. Actually, it just about kicks my ass every time I shoot it, but I like knowing it's in my purse, just a few inches away if I need it.

Have you ever tried Smart Carry holsters? I don't know exactly how big they go, but I have one for my Glock so I can carry a gun without a purse. It's nearly indistinguishable under my clothes; which is kind of the point.

My Glock is a 27 and the caliber is .40.

message 22: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Glock 27...that's my baby. I love that gun. I actually have a .380 Ruger. Small, nice kick and is what I carry. I have a holster for the Glock but it is one of those paddle ones so it sticks out.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a paddle holster, too, and I hate wearing it because it prints like hell.
I also have a .357 mag revolver. It's my in-case-of-emergency weapon since firing it in my apartment would likely burst my eardrums. :P

message 24: by Nathan (new)

Nathan A fellow gun nut. How pleasant to find :-) I am looking at this awesome 12g double-barrel stagecoach gun for home defense. I love shotguns for some reason.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I've shot a double-barrel before, and I'm almost ashamed to admit, it kicked back on me and I fell on my ass. I had a huge bruise on my shoulder for a few days after. It was my first and only time shooting one.

message 26: by Nathan (new)

Nathan There is just something about them I love. They aren't practical because they are only two shots, but they just appeal to me for some reason.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, they're practical in the event of a home invasion because you don't have to be incredibly accurate with your shot. If you're even remotely close, your target should get some of the heat.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Nathan, I'm going to create a gun-related thread, so we won't be adding so many not-really-related posts to this thread. I'm going to post what we've already said in case anyone cares to read.

message 29: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Sounds good.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

It's been created :).

message 31: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments If a person murders someone else, he or she should definitely be subjected to the death penalty. i'm not ruthless or bloodthirsty or anything, but they'd deserve it. take a life, pay with your own, i say. criminals dont mind going to jail. you get health benefits and stuff like that, i think.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Yep, Donatello. I agree. If they kill someone, they shouldn't expect to just sit in a jail cell. But, like I said earlier, I'm a fan of Law Abiding Citizen, The Punisher, and Taken.

message 33: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments what's that? (such ignorance!)

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

What's what?

message 35: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments law abiding citizen, the punisher, taken

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, sorry. They're movies.

Law Abiding Citizen--Gerard Butler plays a man whose wife and daughter are killed and he gets revenge. Only, he gets arrested, but his dubious plan continues while he's still behind bars. Very amazing movie.

The Punisher--Based on a comic book. Tom Jane plays a man whose wife and son are killed, and he gets revenge.

Taken--Liam Neeson plays a man whose daughter is kidnapped. He fights to get her back, and gets a little revenge.

Um, seeing a trend here? :P I love revenge movies.

message 37: by Lauren (new)

Lauren well i dont know what prisons are like were you live but i just recently visitied jail cells here and its pretty horrible, and the wardens were talking to us about loads of stuff to do with criminals etc and there are ways to make there time in jail unberable, and they do it. The police guy i talked to said that they get privilages but its still a jail sentence.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, I'm not saying jail cells are pleasant in any way. Not at all. But I'm a big believer if getting what you give. *shrugs* But, that's just my opinion.

message 39: by Lauren (new)

Lauren oh i know, i was talking about how Donatello said that criminals dont mind going to jail. I dont think thats the case because, i dont actualy think murderers get privilages here anyways. And i know that if they do the slightest thing wrong they arent aloud to see anyone for weeks on end. So i dont think they get off easy being in jail, but still, iam undecided on the law of the death penalty =/

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

I think some jails are more lenient than others, but as I've only been in one (haha, don't ask...but I wasn't there for me), it didn't look too horrible. However, prisons might be different in other countries. Actually, I'm sure of it. I've watched "Locked Up Abroad". Totally different.

message 41: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Yeh i think they must be different, because the ones here, the ones i saw anyways, they were pretty horribe in a way that you wouldnt want to stay there, but not in a way that suggested it was a bad prison, like some abroad i know are badly managed and are kind off iffy lol. But i know that the ones here are not lenient, they do have privlages but still, i dont think that someone would be ok with being there.

message 42: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Maybe thats why we dont have the death penalty here..but i dont know =/

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't think any criminal would want to be in jail. They typically try to avoid the police. But, I guess there might be some benefits if the alternative means living on the streets with no food or shelter.

message 44: by Lauren (new)

Lauren I dont think someone would murder someone to get a warm place to sleep at night, if someone wanted that they would committ a petty crime that would let them out in a couple of months. I think people that kill do it for various different reasons and dont want to be put in jail, because being jailed for murder would get you a much tougher time in jail. I think that in some situations the death penalty is right, but in oothers it seems a bit..extreeme, because sometimes the police do get the wrong person, and there has been cases were they have found out many years later that it wasnt the acused and was in fact someone else that committed the crime. So it can be a bit irrational.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, gosh, I didn't mean that. I just meant they might see some benefits of being in a facility.

Actually, and I might get hated for saying this, but I'm going to take it a step further.

If my husband or any loved one was murdered and the murderer was facing the death penalty, I would love the option of being the one to actually pull the switch, or push the button (or however it's done now; there used to be an electric chair, now there's lethal injection).

Oh, and another post topic. Which would be more humane: electric chair or lethal injection?

message 46: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Sorry i wasnt saying your wrong or anything i was just saying what i think lol :P.

Yeh, i know i would want the person to die if they killed one of my family members, and i would push to have that done, but objectivley, there is an uncertainty about it for me..

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

I can understand that. I suppose it really depends on the situation and other variables, but in my case, I'd want to be there, pushing the button if someone came into my life and purposely took the most important thing from me.

But...I swear I'm generally not a violent person. I just get huffy when I think of my family getting hurt.

message 48: by Lauren (new)

Lauren lol i can see why, when i think about these things i tend to think objectivley instead of thinking about my family. I totaly agree with you about killing someone who took someone important from you, and thats were i get confused again lol because there are so many conflicting factors for me about the death penalty.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, it is a very difficult topic to discuss. I'm just passionate about what I believe. I know some people might not like it; especially my desire to be the one to carry out the sentence, but, eh, what are you going to do? *Shrugs* This is an opinion board, and that's just how I feel.

I'm definitely not trying to change anyone's mind or get them to agree with me; I'm just talking :).

message 50: by Lauren (new)

Lauren yeh me too, i dont mean to come across as agressive if iam lol i just like to air my views. :P
