I am looking for books to read with tough take charge heroines. I like more action then romance. I have already read Mercedes Thompson books, Kate Daniels, Kitty Norville books and am looking for books like these.

Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin series, the first book is Spider's Bite
. One of my all-time favorite heroines...
I second the suggestion of Skinwalker. You might also like Rachel Morgan in Kim Harrison's series, first one is Dead Witch Walking. Also check out Merit of Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series. Check out S.D. Tooley's Sam Casey series, starts with When The Dead Speak.
I love Rachel she is always screwing up LOL but I love that she picks herself up and keeps trying!I actually love all of the series here!
For some newer series I would also add:
I have read the Chicagoland books and really liked them. i used to like Laurell K Hamilton but I i think that she writes all of the sex in her books now because she has run out of real ideas for her stories. it is a shame because Anita was a great character. I am going to check out all of the great suggestions people have posted thanks!
A couple of the books I've only read the first, but they seem to be promising series with great female leads.
I am feeling a little bit of withdrawal! I found Devon Monk's Allie Beckstom series and Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series both this month. Read them all in record time and now I have nothing to read!!! I've been looking around, but I'm just not sure which ones to try.... No one else would understand!
Have you tried Marjorie Liu's Hunter Kiss series? I've only read the first one but Maxine makes for an interesting heroine. She's a demon hunter covered head to toe in tattoos that come alive and help her fight evil. There's three books.
is book one.
Just completed Karen Chance's Cassie Palmer books. It was pretty good. I am reading Jeannie Steins Anna Strong books right now. so far so good.
The Sisters of the Moon series by Yasmine Galenorn. It is about three half Fae sisters and each book is told from the point of view of a different sister. So you have three though heroines in one series. The first book is:
Another great new series is the Night Tracker series by Cheyenne McCray. The first book is:
Here's a list- some may have already been suggested. All are NON-romancy- I am like you in not wanting romance to be the focus, just a touch is enough. Where you see an R next to the book, you might not be interested. A few of the authors are ones no one ever hears about lately- Nancy Collins, Sherry Gottlieb, Karen Taylor- where the heroine is a vamp (not necesssarily a nice vamp). I second Karen Chance, Ilona Andrews, Saintcrow (esp Working for the Devil) and Skinwalker. but I consider Liu, McCray, Galenorn, Kenner real lightweight romancy types- not interested.Hope you find something that pleases you.

I just finished Kelley Armstrong's Waking The Witch
, which features Savannah Levine. She thinks of herself as a tough, well, not heroine, surely, but she is. If you've read other books in the series this may be one you like. (For example, there's a novel from the POV of Cassandra the vampire representative to the Council, and I found her hard to take.)
Karen Chance also writes the Dorina Basarab series, which has several characer cross-overs from the Cassie Palmer series (Mircea, Marlowe, Radu). Dory is tougher and snarkier than Cassie.
If you enjoyed the books by Karen Chance, perhaps you would be interested in the Goodreads Karen Chance Fans group:
