Kimberly (kimberly_b) | 429 comments I'm on my first re-read of the series, currently on Drums. I have a question pertaining to Murtagh's death (this doesn't have anything to do with Drums, btw): Jamie tells Claire that Murtagh died at Culloden, but do we ever learn the details surrounding his passing? I know Jamie has flashbacks of the battle later on, but I can't remember him ever mentioning Murtagh. Anyone?

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments Jamie recounts it in A Breath of Snow and Ashes right before the one conflict in North Carolina before the American Revolution starts in ernest...he thinks he feels Muragh's presence

Kimberly (kimberly_b) | 429 comments Thanks, Dee!! Can't wait to get to that part of my re-read now :)

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments its in the last quarter of the book...I remember that much, but I was listening to it in audio format...right before the battle with the rebels win

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I could swear that I read something about Murtagh and BJR, about Murtagh saving Jamie from BJR but it cost him his life. I thought this was in Echo, but it's cloudy. I've only read it once.

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments yeah...i think it might be...but i can't remember...I haven't read Echo yet...I need to get to it though

Kimberly (kimberly_b) | 429 comments Thanks again, Dee!

Wendy--That does seem to ring a bell in my foggy memory of Echo. I flew through it so fast that I didn't absorb all of it, LOL. Now I'm even more motivated to finish my re-read. It's funny how much more I liked Murtagh after I listened to Outlander on audio and I re-read the book. I didn't pick up on his dry humor and quiet presence as much the first time :)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I really need to get my hands on the Audio's so I can listen to them. I've only ever read it (over and over and over, ha).

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments Wendy - I highly recommend Audible (if you join)...through them I only paid $15 for 5 of the 7 books...each book is 1 credit each...but the unabridged versions of Fiery Cross and ABOSAA aren't available though them yet, so I bought on CD off of ebay

message 10: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments To be honest I'm not sure what Audible is. Are they for MP3's?

message 11: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments its a website similar to amazon (in fact run by them) where you buy audiobooks from...they have a membership program, where you can pick the number of credits you want a month - 1 or 2...each book is 1 credit (with a few exceptions)...it costs between $15 and $22 a month (I pay the $22 for 2 credits)...you can put the books onto mp3 plays, to include ipod's and others; there is also an option for downloading and burning to CD (although i've never used it)...

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I'm definitely going to have to go check this out after work! Thanks for telling me.

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments np...I love it! I have all the available outlander books; a pile of JD Robb's in death books (susan erickson is an excellent narrator) and all of Karen Marie Moning's Highlanders (phil gigante is a god...he makes me all squishy inside with his brogues)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I'm gonna mark those down for when I sign up. I'm pretty excited. (I love the In Death books!)

message 15: by Mommabear (new)

Mommabear | 9 comments I found where Jamie first told Clair about Murtaghs death in the second half of Voyager, right after she is stabbed in the arm on the ARTEMIS, about not feeling dying.

message 16: by C (new)

C Warren | 1 comments Jamie describes Murtagh's death in Voyager. It is after Jamie looks for Ian at the place where the dead slaves are being burned. He gets ill, in part, because it brings back memories of Culloden and the burning of bodies. He recounts what happened at Culloden (i.e., how he made it behind British lines, decided it was an unlikely place to die, returned to the field, and found Murtagh gravely wounded).

Mary Fortin | 1 comments My Audios are on the way. I have had a set back in my mental recovery and can not read well again. It is so frustrating. SO I ordered the audios. I could only get to/through book 7 but that should last for awhile.

M. MacKinnon | 121 comments Wishing you well, Mary. It's nice to have alternate paths to Outlander, isn't it? We will not be denied!

Diane | 1360 comments Wouldn't it be nice if a sexy Scot could come read book 8 for you :)

message 20: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 110 comments Give the audios a chance, they are awesome once Davina falls into a rhythm with the characters - I am convinced as I own them all, that they are a great compliment to the books. You hear a different aspect that you don't always get in the reading. LOVE THEM ALL, both the books and the audio.

message 21: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Somehow, I missed the part in DIA about Murtagh dying in the battle of Culloden. Could someone please post the sentence/paragraph that refers to his death? (I don't have the books to go back and reference myself - I've been listening to the audio CD's from the Library). According to Google, it's in Part 5, Chapter 1. Thanks!

message 22: by Beth (new)

Beth MacCabe | 48 comments Voyager:
Ch 1 "Murtagh. He had a terrible feeling about his godfather, but no memory to give it shape. Murtagh was dead; he knew that must be it, but didn’t know why or how he knew.

Again Ch 54, "He was sitting against a tussock near the middle of the field—Murtagh. He’d been struck a dozen times at least, and there was a dreadful wound in his head—I knew he was dead.” He hadn’t been, though; when Jamie had fallen to his knees beside his godfather and taken the small body in his arms, Murtagh’s eyes had opened. “He saw me. And he smiled.” And then the older man’s hand had touched his cheek briefly. “Dinna be afraid, a bhalaich,” Murtagh had said, using the endearment for a small, beloved boy. “It doesna hurt a bit to die.”

Jessica Thank you, Beth! :)

message 25: by Nicie (new)

Nicie Carolan | 5 comments Thank you. Murtagh is my favorite character and was disappointed I couldn’t find these passages. I knew Jamie took Murtagh in his arms and they were together at Murtagh’s end. Am glad Murtagh in tv series but disappointed in reunion scene. Jamie would not have trouble recognizing Murtagh as an older man with gray hair. with Murtagh it is all about his eyes. Loved that Murtagh got Claire’s attention when he arrived at Frasers Ridge with the boogie woogie refrain.
