Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) So, thanks to Diane's wonderful persuasive powers, I'm getting some sort of ebook-reading-device for Christmas. I was planning on getting a Kindle but was wondering what else is out there? Is the Kindle the best value, or are there some books that you can't get on it?

Advice will be muchly appreciated!

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments I have a Kindle, and I love it! :) I haven't heard much about other e-readers, but I like Kindle because amazon is so easy to work with and there are so many free amazon kindle books, it might be hard to download those and use them on another e-reader, but I could be entirely wrong about that too.

I was planning to get one for Christmas but I changed my mind. I have a Kindle for Android on my Android cell phone (a free app) and I also have a pdf reader(another free app) on my cell phone. The only thing it does not do is let me read some of the netgalley books that I have to read on the digital reader on my main computer, but other than that it does everything else for me. I can get Kindle books and all the freebies sent to my phone, so for now I think I am happy.

Sam | 5 comments I've heard good things about the Kindle as well as the Nook from Barnes and Noble. The only reason I would lean toward a Nook is that I could actually hold it in my hands before I purchase. I do not personally know anyone who owns a Kindle so I can't really see the features for myself. I've also heard some good things about Sony's ereader, but don't know much about it. As I understand it the Kindle and the Nook are very, very similar.

Marta Perry (martaperry) | 61 comments I intended to ask for a Kindle for Christmas, but our kids gave one to my husband for his birthday yesterday, and he's willing to share! I set it up in about ten minutes today--it's very easily to operate and very clear to read.

Brenda | 81 comments I had an E Libre ereader, and actually I think Borders plans on selling it for 99 dollars, but I recently purchased the next generation Kindle, and got the 3g capibility with it and I would say hands down I think the Kindle is the best, I love the experimental feature it has where you can actually surf the web with it, and because it is 3g I don't have to be in an area with wifi which is great!

message 7: by Rachel (last edited Oct 26, 2010 02:26AM) (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Sadly we don't have Barnes & Noble over here so it looks like a Nook is out of the question, although it does look very good! I think my options (at least ones that I can afford) are down to the Kindle and Sony eReader. The Kindle is sounding very good! Although I'll probably go for the non-3G version because it's about £40 cheaper.

message 8: by Marta (new)

Marta Perry (martaperry) | 61 comments Our new one is the non-3G version, and it seems to work fine. I guess you just have to think ahead to download a book while you're in wifi range!

Diane U (djuseless) Just to let you know, you can touch an hold a Kindle at Best Buy, Target and Staples (soon!).

The major difference between the Nook and the Kindle is that the Nook has the ability to lend and borrow books. If your local library offers ebooks, then you can borrow them. I have never been a library person so that was not a factor for me.

I love mine, as you all know! LOL!

message 10: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Interestingly I read an article the other day about how Kindle plan to introduce the ability to lend books for up to 14 days, which sounds excellent. Apparently it depends on the publisher.

message 11: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) That is true Rachel. So I wonder if only newer books can be lent out provided that the publisher allows it. It would help with the battle between the Nook.

message 12: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I think it could work in the publisher's favour. For example, you could lend me the first book in a series and I could like it so much that I'd go out and buy the rest. Obviously, people could cheat and just have books lent to them 24/7... Hmm. They'll probably put limits on it, like only being able to lend the same person a book once and so on.

message 13: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Yes, I think that you can only lend out the book to one person only once for 14 days. Honsetly, I hate reading on a time limit.

message 14: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I also hate reading in a time limit - I have a book in my room that my boyfriend lent me in June! But it does make sense in this context, otherwise they'd permanently have the book, right?

message 15: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Man, I wish I got a commission for every kindle I recommended and they purchased one. I've already "sold" 3 and I am working on one more now.

message 16: by Sam (new)

Sam | 5 comments Went to Best Buy this evening and was really disappointed that the Kindle only had this generic demo program. I couldn't even just look at plain text. I think I'll check Target just to make sure they're not all that way. Not sure why they chose to do that when they had the other models (Sony, Nook, Pandigital) on modes that let you explore the reader. Kinda bummed about it.

message 17: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) She makes a lot of really valid points! Definitely recommend that page.

I never thought I'd turn over to the ways of ebooks, but I love my Kindle and appreciated it so much when I travelled down to Yorkshire to visit my family last week and just took my Kindle, rather than half a dozen books. And if I changed my mind about which book I wanted to read, I had it with me!

I got one. I'm still trying to get used to it because the one I was using on my android phone is touch screen and the Kindle is not. I have one question maybe someone could tell me real easy. All my books from my android phone are in my archive on my kindle, when I buy new books they go to my home page how do I get those in my archive. My husband gave me this for my anniversary present and I LOVE it. Just wish NetGalley would go back to getting Kindle options. But oh well.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004... This is the cover I got for it. I really like that it holds it for you and then you can turn the zipper upsidedown and just have one thing to hold to read.

Thanks for everyone's encouragement on getting this. I think it is one of the best things I have ever bought lol

message 21: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Congrats Jodie! If you are like the rest of us, you will find that you read a book faster on your e-reader than a paper one. I have no idea why but it's true!

Happy anniversary too! What did you get him?

If it was originally purchased within 14 days, I would email kindle customer service and ask for a refund! I did it once and they refunded my money on another freebie!

Thanks for posting this! I just found out this a.m. that it's available until the 13th for both Kindle and Nook.

Kristy, I didn't even know it would come out as a free e-book for a special promotional time and I'm the author! Publishers are trying this as a marketing tool and it's not done with every book and seems like something that may be time sensitive -- they look at it and make marketing decisions, budget decisions, etc. And I wonder if this isn't going to be too expensive for a publisher to do -- give away their product...I'm thrilled they're getting it "out there" to people who might not have picked up the book. : )

Angie | 9 comments It's available at B & N for free as well. I personally like it as a marketing tool. As a result of picking up free books from authors I wouldn't normally buy I have started buying their books.

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments Today is a very sad day. Alas, someone stole my purse while I was in a cafe in Madrid, and my kindle was in my purse. :( :( :( I will not be able to replace it any time soon due to the cost. However, I am not writing to complain but to inform you all of something amazing Amazon can do.

I immediately deregistered my Kindle so the thief could not access my Amazon account, and then I emailed customer service to see what else should be done to ensure my information stays private. They were so kind as to make a note in the system, and to block the serial number of my Kindle from being registered by any other user. So, the thief who got my Kindle will not be able to benefit from his or her theft! While I am reeling over the loss and very sad, I am super glad that Amazon can make the Kindle unusable for a thief.

Hopefully none of you ever experience this same issue, but if you do at least we can make it worthless for the thief. Karma.

message 29: by Kristy (new)

Kristy (riverunbroken) | 250 comments Oh no, that is awful Camille. I am sorry that happened.

message 30: by Camille (new)

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments Thanks everyone. Luckily my purse did not have my wallet or passport so they got my Kindle, phone and camera. The Kindle is unusable b/c it can never be re-registered. The Phone is unusable b/c it is password protected, and my service is already canceled. And I'm going to see if they can block the serial number from ever being reactivated. But beyond that, Verizon has no service available in Spain so they'd have to go to another country to activate the phone in any way. The camera, not much I can do about that. *sigh* I just hope there is no way they can buy a charger for the batter that works over here so that it too is unusable.

I'm sorry to hear that happened to you Camille! I am happy to hear how cooperative Amazon was in deregistering and blocking it from being registered.

Good thing they did not get your wallet and passport! Can you imagine how much trouble that would have caused??

message 33: by Camille (new)

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments Well Diane, it certainly would have been troublesome, but a good excuse to stay in Europe permanently. ;)

The other major book problem I had was realizing a library book I had here was in that purse. So I emailed them and they wanted to charge me $165 to replace the book which I can get for paperback brand new for less than $10. I had to email the library that actually owns the book (I got it through an inter-library loan program) and they were kind enough to let me pay around $18 to cover the lost book (the book cost + administrative fees). My goodness that thief has made things challenging. But I fully believe Karma will come around to him/her someday...

message 34: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I'm so sorry your purse got stolen, but I'm glad you were able to deactivate your phone and Kindle to stop the thief from profiting from them. You're always warned to watch out for thieves on holiday but never expect it'll actually happen... But thank goodness you had your passport, that would have been horrible to try to replace!

$165 for a lost library book? That's shocking! Surely they'd be sympathetic if your entire handbag had been stolen, rather than you losing it somewhere. I'm glad the other library was much more understanding.

Hope things become less stressful soon!

I am reading with my kindle now. Was wondering about page numbers. Is there a way to update your book on goodreads and just use a percentage insted of a book page number?

I also read something on Books on the Knob blog about an update for the Kindle to include page numbers. Has anyone done this?
http://blog.booksontheknob.org/2011/0...

message 36: by Kristy (new)

Kristy (riverunbroken) | 250 comments Click on the word page and it will change it to percentage. I had the same problem because it didn't have percentage for ebook. It's a simple thing to change. :)

Thanks that helps me on Goodreads. does anyone know anything about the Kindle Update?

message 38: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 81 comments Lorie, If you have Wi Fi it automatically downloaded on its own, otherwise go to the manage your kindle software updates on Amazon and its the Kindle software update version 3.1. The page will walk you through the download process. Mine downloaded on its own, but I didn't see it, so this page really helped me :).

message 43: by Camille (new)

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments Yes Kristy! Since I had already de-registered my other Kindle and customer service blocked it from being re-registered my account had no Kindle associated, so when I registered this new Kindle it let me re-download everything to my Kindle! :)

Plus, they are saving for a new house so after they are married they can move in together. She really pinched her pennies to do this for me, and I am so grateful. I will have to come up with a very creative way to say thank you, and remind her how much I truly love her. :)

message 47: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) On an entirely different topic, how many of you use the internet on your Kindle? I do this occasionally but GoodReads in particular is difficult to access on Kindle as you have to zoom quite far in in order to read anything.

message 48: by Camille (new)

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments I usually don't, but also because my phone is a Droid so it has internet on it that I use more often. That, and in school I am constantly on my laptop, so I check the internet from my laptop.

Personally, I know they are working on improving Kindle's internet browsing, and I hope they do because I don't love trying to use it on my Kindle.

message 49: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I mostly use the internet on my kindle when I am away. It is great for finding local restaurants, addresses of places to visit and movie times. My cell phone does not have internet access so we use the kindle. It cannot access Good Reads or my email but it is better than nothing.

As yet, I don't have a Kindle or anything like it.... Does anyone know whether the books I just got for Kindle for PC will later transfer onto a Kindle if and when I buy one?
