The Kite Runner
I read all of the books listed above, and after spending a year in northern Afghanistan at a remote outpost with the British Army, decided to write write my own novel-- Farishta (Dari for 'angel'). It's the story of a mid-career female American diplomat sent to Afghanistan against her will in 2005. Farishta just won the 2010 Amazon Breakthrough Novel award and will be published by Penguin Books in August 2011. You can read a 60 page excerpt and some reviews at Amazon.com. I hope you enjoy it. Pat McArdle
Unfortunately you won't be able to read my novel until it is published by Penguin Books next August (2011). You can read the first sixty pages --and pre-order a copy if the excerpt grabs you--at Amazon.com. Just type in my name and the book title 'Farishta'.

Jason Elliot's An Unexpected Light: Travels In Afghanistan is a fantastic non-fiction book, also enjoyable are A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush, by Eric Newby, The Carpet Wars, by Christopher Kremmer and Tea with the Taliban by Ian D. Robinson (it is not on Goodreads for some reason).
Thanks Osho, but it is not. The one I refer is by a NZ author who also wrote You Must Die Once and Gantsara: Alone Across Mongolia, both excellent books.
Okay, thanks. I manually added the book to the Goodreads database.
