Isabel and the School for Sorceresses.(excerpt)
Isabel woke up in the morning and smiled. Yesterday at breakfast, she told her parents That she was quitting ballet and starting the School for Sorceresses. It did not go very well. Her mother cried, “First, a pet iguana, then crazy clothes! That problem with your skin when you turn into a dragon! At this rate you will never get to college.” “Mom,” said Isabel, “I am going to be a sorceress!” “You may as well let her go,” stepped in Isabel’s father. “WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!!!” her mother yelled. “If you don’t let me go, I will turn into a dragon during ballet class,” announced Isabel. “We’ll give it a try for six months, But no turning frogs into boys,” moaned her mother. “There aren’t any good looking ones in our pond,” Thought Isabel. “But the idea has possibilities.” “Don’t give her any thoughts about kissing boys,” stormed her father. Isabel’s hopes came down and then went up again. “I can sneak my way around things,” went through Isabel’s head.
Well, that was yesterday. Today, Isabel had to show up for her first sorceress class. She left home and found the ring of toadstools in the forest. The fairies popped out from behind an oak tree and spoke to Isabel, “Every morning, just come here and step into the ring, Or you can travel by fairy dust from your new textbooks!” “Cool,” said Isabel, “can I put some on my skate board and guitar?” “Not if you want to be really good at it,” A small hawk on a tree branch spoke. It hit the ground and turned into a beautiful young woman. “My name is Astur. I’ve come to save you from ballet and teach you about magic.” “I can turn into dragon,” thought Isabel smugly. “I can read your thoughts, young lady,” laughed the raven haired beauty. “I may turn into a hawk, but I can act like a dragon, anytime, I assure you!” She waved her hand. Glass elevator doors opened behind the ring of toadstools. “That is kind of high tech,” thought a speechless Isabel. “We sure try!” smiled her teacher. “After you.” “This is going to be so much fun,” screamed Isabel and jumped inside. “Will my broomstick have remote control?” “You can do that for Halloween. Here, we’ll teach you to unleash the power of your mind And be a sorceress.” “Are there any boys in my class?” “Only if they can be a sorceress.” The doors smoothly opened. “Say hello to your classmates.” Isabel froze in shock. It was just like a room in the local library, Including the librarian. “Hello, Isabel,” said Mrs. Brown. “I will be in charge of your new textbooks.” Standing behind her were two very hip girls. One had on a super short kimono, Fishnet stockings, and tie-dyed boots. She looked Japanese. A triad of ponytails was a riot of curls. Her eyes were turquoise blue. The other was wearing a plain orange sari And had blue streaks in her long, straight hair. Her eyes were a vivid golden brown, Almost a yellow. The non-smiling girls stared at Isabel. They obviously did not warm up to Mrs. Brown. Astur stepped forward. “Isabel, meet Agni Sirvika and Mizuko Mameido. Girls, may I introduce Lady Isabel Walterson.” The girl in the orange sari narrowed her eyes. Isabel felt crushed. “Did she have to bring up the title?! Now I will never be friends with them!” “Mrs. Brown and I have things to discuss,” said Astur. “We will leave you girls alone for a while to get better acquainted.” The teachers left. “Want to read an eight-hundred page manual On how to treat our new textbooks?” Asked Mizuko from on top of the table. Agni stretched on the window sill. “What took you so long?! She was reading this thing out loud to us for the past two hours!!!” Isabel laughed. “I was not late. I think Mrs. Brown brought you here early just for this. Consider yourself lucky. She has been torturing me in our town’s library Since I was three years old. Forget Mrs. Brown. I am just dying to learn what you can turn into!” The girls moaned and then shook their fists in the direction of the door. Mizuko stood up. “I can turn into a mermaid, but I am afraid of water.” Agni pounced off the window sill. “I turned into a tiger and ran away When my parents arranged a marriage for me.” “I can turn into a…” started Isabel. The door burst open: A terribly flustered Astur rushed in. A stack of colorful books emitting sparks floated in behind her. She shut the door closed with her angry stare. “I AM GOING TO COMPLAIN TO THE AUTHORITIES!” Yelled Mrs. Brown from behind the wall. The new teacher smiled victoriously And stretched her hands towards the books. “Welcome to high tech sorcery, girls!” The books melted away into four fabulous-looking laptops! One stayed by Astur; the others parked midair by each of the students. The girls cheered. “Can I put punky stuff on mine?!” squealed delighted Isabel. “This laptop is not a gadget. It is more of a pet and a guide, and can think for itself. Once you properly bond with each other, Your magical signature will appear on it.” Astur sat on the table cross-legged and stroked the keyboard. “Let’s start our first lesson. Just open the laptop And start typing everything that is most important to you. Don’t try to show off and don’t hold anything back. Be honest, do a little soul searching, and magic will reveal itself.” Mizuko grabbed her laptop and gave it a kiss! Two fuzzy ears sprouted!!! “Cute!” yelled Mizuko. “It’s a bunny!!!” chirped Isabel. “Open slowly,” warned Agni. “It could be a cosmic hyena or something.” “Girls!” piped in Astur, “I need you to clear your minds and start typing.” She made a small movement with her hand. Suddenly, they were in the middle of Isabel’s garden. “Now, you must concentrate and type. You are going to learn to meditate.” “Still better than ballet… Still better than ballet,” whispered Isabel. “Better than my future husband….” Joined Agni from a perfect lotus pose. “Better than learning a tea ceremony,” chanted Mizuko. Garden in the sun. Our fingers, full of hope, bloom. Magic opens doors. In swirling winds it drifts here. Our magic shall come. A rainbow appeared over the girls. Their laptops lifted up. “I think mine is a snake!” uttered Agni in awe. A small, colorful, ribbon crawled out of her laptop And settled itself on her shoulder. Mizuko’s laptop started to jump up and down. A hot pink bunny popped into the air and landed in her lap. “It is totally cute!!!!!” declared Isabel.
“I wonder what mine is going to be!” she pleaded in suspense. Her laptop flipped in the air; A bat jumped out and landed upside down in Isabel’s hair. “It is so punky!!!!!!!” exclaimed Isabel. “My mom is going to go crazy!” “Yes, you get to take it home with you,” said Astur. “You can use it to chat with each other on magic hotline. Read the first two chapters on understanding your powers And start working on your magical signature. To the outside world your pets and laptops will appear normal.
Mizuko, Agni, the elevator will take you back. Isabel, you can walk home. I’ll see you here tomorrow at ten. Congratulations!” Astur turned into a hawk and flew off. Elevator doors hummed open. “Can’t we ride this thing and visit all the floors?” suggested Isabel. “Destinations are preprogrammed. Violators will be stopped,” answered the elevator. “Bummer,” mumbled Isabel and waved goodbye to her new friends. “I’ll just go introduce my guide to my mom.”
* * *
“It’s a rat, it’s a rat!” yelled her mother. “It’s an itty bitty bat and an essence of my imagination. “It will be my spiritual guide to magic and appear normal to you,” Chanted Isabel over her mother in a dead faint on the kitchen floor. “Trade it in for a cat or keep it in your room,” said her father .......There is more in a book....................
