I think readers like continuity and the chance to get to know characters more deeply. You can only learn so much about a character in one book about that character. But when you see him/her interacting with others, in a consistent, familiar world, you really start to feel like you know the character better.

Brandy (brenaew) I like to meet the family and connect with them. You do get to know more about them when they are secondary characters and are brought back up in other books until they get their own. I also think it has to do with being able to see past family members in future books and seeing how they are doing.

Family series end up being like you're visiting cousins every once in a while. You see them as part of your family, just not directly living with you.
