I can't think of many literary novels that I would recommend to everybody I know but I feel comfortable doing that with

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole.

Toole won a Pulitzer for this after he was dead and it was not out of sympathy or other politics because he was virtually unknown at the time.

The book is hilarious first of all and secondly it focuses on a highly interesting character who could be from a classic Russian novel but is from New Orleans, Louisiana; specifically the French Quarter which is a place that, if you're like me, you love.

Highly readable. Do it

The book I've most recently read that I want to recommend to family, friends, and maybe random strangers on the street is I Am Legend. If you like intellectual science fiction then I can't recommend it strongly enough. None of the movies made after this book can even begin to compare. In fact, the movie I Am Legend with Will Smith barely resembles this book...the characters names are the same and that's about it. And it was written by Richard Matheson, who wrote quite a few Twilight Zone episodes and is just a top notch sci-fi/thriller writer.

Read it now.

I've read this book and i'd have to agree. I could barely watch the movie after reading it.

It's funny you say that, because I almost bought the book. I think it was from looking at some of the books you've read. It's like 3 dollars on Amazon and I forgot to order it. It's in my cart, though!!

Buy it now! If your favorite books are the ones that keep you thinking after you're done reading them, then you will love this one. It definitely kept me pondering for a while.

Hmm the comments here suggest it could very well be something I would enjoy too.
