Mr.Jamie (mrjamie) I was reading the "Talk about the Novels" section and couldn't believe that MISERY wasn't mentioned. I absolutely loved Misery and found it to be my favorite SK novel. Am I alone in thinking that Misery was awesome?

Erica (bookpsycho) | 109 comments I love Misery!!! While I would never go the extremes Annie would, I can understand getting into a book or series and feeling as if the characters could be real. I have felt crushed before when a favorite character died, and no, I'm not insane! :)

Neen I really liked Misery too, some bits were a bit.. cringeworthy.. but that's nothing new for King and I really enjoyed it..

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Misery is one of my very favorites from him and one of the few that scared me. I almost decided against becoming a writer after finishing it.

Dustin Misey is a great read. In fact, it introduced me to the SK Universe!

Lucky you! I'd watched all kinds of movies based on his books but my first book from him was The Tommyknockers. I like it actually but for a kid ( I was I believe 13 or 14 and in 7th grade) who'd just decided to go from R L Stine to King it was a heck if a job!

message 7: by Dustin (new) - added it

Dustin Wow, Amanda! Reading The Tommyknockers first must have been quite challenging!

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Very but I still liked it once I got unto it. Of Ciurse The Stand was next :)

Dustin Oh, WOW!

★ Jess | 49 comments Probably my favorite King.
I always knew he was a good writer, but this made him look AMAZING in my eyes.

my review

Felina Aside from a few of his shorter stories Misery was my introduction to King. I'm still a Newbie. I read Misery in October 09. I really enjoyed this book. I had seen the movie was I was really young. I tried to watch it again after I read the book but for some reason I thought it was boring and I never finished it.

message 12: by Dustin (new) - added it

Dustin Yeah, the film pales in comparison to the novel!

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) True but I still love both of them actually. Kathy Bates is one of my very favorite authors to this day.

Dustin Kathy Bates is a GREAT actress! Have you seen her in Dolores Claiborne!?!

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) YEP :D

Felina Amanda wrote: "True but I still love both of them actually. Kathy Bates is one of my very favorite authors to this day."

Does Kathy Bates write?

Yes I think Kathy did a great job as Annie. I haven't seen Dolores Claiborne yet though.

Well I certainly hope not, either, Steven!

Good luck with your writing.

Library Lady 📚 | 91 comments I must have read this ten or fifteen years ago, but I remember loving it. I just saw the movie this year for the first time. KB is great, and since I don't remember the book well enough to notice discrepencies, I really enjoyed the film version.

William Malmborg (williammalmborg) | 9 comments Misery is one of the best. Very disturbing. I read it when I was in high school and my Mom kept asking me what page I was on because she wanted to see my reaction to the hobbling scene, which was far different from what was displayed in the movie. King did such a wonderful job of creating a tense atmosphere with this one (does a great job with all of them, but this one most of all in my opinion), and made it so I just couldn't stop reading it. I had to see what happened.

I loved this book. The funny thing about that line is, while I was reading the book, it was the only line when I heard Kathy Bates in my head and it kinda blasted me out of the story. The rest of the time Annie Wilkes was this nurse that I worked with who would be super sweet to me at the beginning of her shift and then get nasty and yell at me as the shift went on and she got stressed out. I felt she physically matched Wilkes' description in the book as well.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 35 comments Misery was a good book, one of those times when I saw the movie before reading it. Kathy Bates really is the ideal Annie I think. Both are good works.

Robert (Barlow) | 1 comments Have just been lucky enough to be accepted as a book giver on World Book Night 2012. On April 23 2012 I have to give out 25 copies of my chosen book from a list of 25.

I am giving out Misery!!!! The only Stephen King Book on this list. If anyone would like to be included into the hat for a free copy , please message me.

Donna (donnaenden) | 53 comments I really liked the movie Misery and the Green Mile and my favorite is Shawshank Redemption. So I had to at least try and read these books. I had never read Stephen King before so I picked up these three first and have continued to read Stephen King since then. The novels were better, but the movies were also very good.

Char I think that Misery was awesome. I also think that Annie Wilkes has to be one of the most memorable characters, EVER.

Char OMG, Pennywise is creepy. Sewers are too.

We all float down here.

Tiffany I enjoyed this book a bit, but I felt like this is one of the rare cases when I preferred the movie. I thought Kathy Bates was just incredible! I think my favorite part of the book was the novel within the novel. Annie was a very disgusting character (which was obviously the point). For some reason, I found it extremely difficult to read about her unhygienic habits. I suppose that's just my OCD tendencies kicking in :) Overall, I am glad I read the book.

I am ready to get started on this book!

Lauren Kennedy (laurenxo) | 66 comments My copy of this recently arrived in the mail so I'll be getting started on it as soon as I finish what I'm currently reading. I'm excited! I'm hoping to watch the movie after also.

Courtney | 293 comments I'm going to join in as soon as I finish Watership Down. Two re-reads in a row - it's unheard of for me!

Mickey | 2 comments Misery was one of a couple of books that made me feel claustrophobic when I read it. It's contained in such a small space and has such a limited number of characters. The very thought of being so completely dependent on someone who is so unstable stresses me out. I think Paul is a great narrator because of his authorial attention to detail and (this is just my opinion) his devolution from a normal man into her captive and his descriptions of the process he goes through.

This book is definitely in my top five favorite of King's and I think it's his tightest and most unrelenting book.

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Hmm, I wasn't planning on joining in, but now I think I will, I haven't read this one in like 10 years or so. Soon as I finish the one I'm reading now I'll get on Misery :)

Donna (donnaenden) | 53 comments I just finished reading Misery just a few months ago..so I will not be re-reading it yet..but hopefully I will get a chance to join in on the discussion from time to time...enjoy reading it is a very good book and movie!

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Alright! Finished my other book and I'll be cracking Misery open tonight! :D

★ Jess | 49 comments I love Misery! I haven't read it in a while, but will still join discussions :)

message 38: by Dustin (new) - added it

Dustin I may have said this before in another thread or something, but Misery will always hold a special place in my heart and mind, as it was my introduction (so to speak) to SK's brilliant work.

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Ok, I'm liking it so far, but it's making me cringe and grit my teeth. Ugh, just the thought of the pain he must be in... Another thing, when she (view spoiler) Annie's crazy, but I'll admit I wouldn't mind reading the Misery books myself, despite Paul's hatred of them. They sound interesting to me lol. But I'm liking it, it's giving me that cabin-fever, claustrophobia kind of feeling, making me nervous.

Allana (allanavee) | 6 comments I read Misery a while back and although I think it is a very well-written book, it isn't one of my favorites. I found Annie too disgusting to sympathize with, and with Paul I wanted to yell at him "for heavens sake don't antagonize her!" But I'll give the book another try just to see what I missed while I was trying not to be disgusted by Annie.

Spookyelle (uglyoldbat) | 1 comments Im about to start reading this for the first time, really looking forward to it

A.D. Koboah (adkoboah) | 76 comments Loved, loved, LOVED Misery. I read it a good 15 years ago and I think it is definitely one of the best SK books out there. Annie is one of his scariest characters as she starts off normal enough and so the craziness seems to come out of the blue. The thing I really liked is that as crazy as Annie was, she was right in the end. Films are normally never as good as the books, but I really liked the film. Kathy Bates was brilliant.

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Just finished this morning. I liked it better this time than I did the first time I read it, the pacing, the feel of it all was great. Annie was disgusting, and yet I wanted to keep seeing what she was doing, just like bugs disgust me but I still sometimes have an urge to look at them closely. I gave it 4 Stars this time.

Lisa | 11 comments I'm so excited to read Misery again. It 's been at least 20 years since the first time, but I still remember the character's names. That's how much the story stuck with me. I'm anxious to see how my feelings may change after this reading.

message 45: by Paul (new) - rated it 5 stars

Paul Salter | 11 comments not read this since it first came out, currently almost half way through, really enjoying it.
as other have mentioned, the film was very good also, i have it somewhere and might have a watch of that again after finishing the book.

Donna (donnaenden) | 53 comments I recently re-watched the movie..my kids were like "what is this your watching?, looks dumb" (they are 19 and 11). But after a few minutes into the movie they were actually watching and enjoying the movie. They were on a horror movie kick for awhile and I am not much into most of the horror movies out there (most of them are b rated and just plain stupid imhp)so I had to make them watching something good.

Jeanine (jjelizalde) I read it when it first came out but who could possibly forget Annie Wilkes! An author's worst nightmare!

Tracy (notrace) | 105 comments I am enjoying this re-read of Misery. I haven't read it in a very long time. (I have a 1988 vintage) It's like revisiting a really scary old friend. Annie is the kind of person you never want to meet that just might be out there.

Lauren Kennedy (laurenxo) | 66 comments I just finished up another group read so I'm excited to be starting this one, today. I'll be watching the movie after it also. I love the actress that plays Annie (can't remember her name).

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 117 comments Lauren wrote: "I love the actress that plays Annie (can't remember her name)."

Kathy Bates. ;)

My little brother has admired Kathy Bates so much since seeing the performance that she did in Misery that he says if he were to ever meet her he'd "punch her in the face, and that's just a complement to how well she played that part!"
