Lucas Hughes (coffee-with-chess) | 1 comments I'm a pretty huge oz fan. Currently I've been collecting the first edition facsimiles from the Bradford press. They are absolutely gorgeous. I'm also a huge fan of the Marvel Oz series illustrated by Skottie Young. You should give them a try if you haven't already. His take on the Tin Woodman is genius. He says the mustache was inspired by Baum. Love it.

Tarl | 3 comments Greetings, Oz-philes. I, too, am a big Oz fan, but I saw that there were a lot of hanging plot threads in the original book. I had to write a story to tie up all of the loose ends.
For anyone interested, I am writing a prequel series (The Hidden History of Oz), faithful to the facts contained in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I have published my first book in the series, The Witch Queens (available on Amazon for Kindle and paperback).
The Witch Queens (The Hidden History of Oz, #1) by Tarl Telford
I am currently in the middle of writing the second book. I may have some questions for you widely-read fans, if you are game.
These next twelve months promise to be most interesting, with Disney's "Oz, the Great and Powerful" coming out in March 2013. I anticipate that there will be a lot of publishers jumping on board and looking for Oz spinoffs and prequels. The best Oz books will rise to the top. It's up to us fans to spread the word about the good books and give honest critiques of the bad ones. Otherwise we'll get spinoff books based on the MGM movie.
Remember, Oz is powered by human dreams. It is up to us to dream big and make Oz better.

Chris ( librocubicularist ) King Hi ... Meant to start the Oz titles after the mentions in The Dark Tower series .... Now i have

The Oz books are enjoyable to read. If you start to notice all of the story threads that Baum drops and never picks up again, head on over to The Hidden History of Oz, Book One:
The Witch Queens to clear things up. I have made it a point to stay true to the original vision of Oz, presented in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. You can check out my blog for more details on this exciting project. http://hiddenhistoryofoz.wordpress.com.

S Anyone seen the new OZ film?

message 10: by Tarl (new)

Tarl | 3 comments @S - if you are referring to Oz, the Great and Powerful, yes, I took my family to see it. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. This is in large part to my knowing Oz inside and out, and writing Oz books of my own. The visual effects are pretty good. The star power was good, but the overall movie was disappointing. Why? Because it could have been so much better.
In an interview with Total Film magazine, Sam Raimi said that there just wasn't much information in the books, so he took about 40% of his story from all 14 of Baum's books, then filled in the other 60% with what he wanted to tell.
That is frustrating because I am focusing only on one book for my series, and I'm getting four books out of it!
If there is a discount movie theater near you, I would recommend seeing Oz, the Great and Powerful, just so you can say that you had the experience. Once you see that prequel version, check out other prequels (like mine, for example) and compare them. You will see a big difference.

S Any opinions on Out of OZ, How about The Wiz? The film has a lot of problems but it actually follows the book more closely than the Judy Garland version.

Jeff | 2 comments Also very disappointed with Oz the Great and Powerful. What books was Raimi reading if he could not get enough story? Always tragic when Hollywood ignores perfectly good source material. Too much special effects and not enough true plot or character development.

Lucia | 1 comments I read to my children a chapter a night and we are currently almost done with book #4 "Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz". We were all happy to be back in Oz with the original cast of characters. We have all of the hardcovers from Books of Wonder and they are beautiful! Can't wait for book #5!

Yes, I have not read CONAN, but, apparently none of the 3 Conan films was based on the books. Odd.
