Vincent, or Vince as he liked to be called, just finished helping out a few girls who were carrying a lot of books. He offered them help and they refused, but he managed to convince them that it's perfectly fine for him to help them around. Unlike the other ones with his status, he's always helping around. It was why people loved him easily, and he loved them as well. As long as they don't do anything that angers him, then everything is dainty and everything is good.
He was wearing classy stuff, but not expensive enough to draw attention. With a small kind smile he always maintained, he wondered as he walked what in the world the other princes and princesses were doing.
Kat hurried into the hallway, eager to get to her dorm. She had a ton of homework, and she wanted to see Kenna. Hopefully she was there, anyway. She cursed under her breath as her arms collapsed and her textbooks from her last class flew across the hallway. She quickly grabbed them, and turned around to see a boy standing behind her. He was dressed in classy, but not flashy clothes, and looked nice. Hopefully he wasn't too snobby and wasn't going to judge that she was a normal noblewoman. She internally sighed. This whole ranking system is a stupid form of making students discriminate against each other.
As she got lost in her thoughts, she remembered about what she could be doing - going to a friend's sweet sixteen. No, she rather go back to her dorm and see Kenna. That would be much better, even if Kenna just fell asleep. She suddenly snapped out of her thoughts and turned to the boy, "Um hi."
Just when Vincent was about to walk away and ask the faculty if they need help, because he was getting bored of doing nothing, he heard a sudden crash, the kind of crash that papers and book does. Before he knew it, a girl was already picking up the things that scattered on the floor. It took him a second to recognize a bit who it was. He didn't know her name and never talked to her before, but he had seen her around already. "Hey there. Need any help with that?" He asked, a warm smile automatically showing up on his face. "I don't have much to do anyway." He added, placing his hands in his pockets.
He hoped she didn't know his ranking. People tend to scramble away when they find out. "I'm Vincent, by the way. Nice to meet you." He said after a second of thinking, looking at her books and shrugging with a smile. "I'd shake your hand but you're a bit preoccupied."
Kat was finished picking up her books before he asked to help her. This guy - whatever his name - was probably trying to make a good princely impression and make people think that he wasn't a total and complete brat like every other prince a princess. Or maybe he was truly that way - she didn't know. Kat had to respond to him, so she did, "Uh, no thanks. Thanks for the offer though." Wow, she sure sounded extremely stupid.
Soon the guy introduced himself. Vincent. What a princely name. "I'm Katelyn, though most people call me Kat." Gosh, that also turned out bad. "Yeah, I take a ton of classes." Well, he probably has the same amount of books and a servant to carry them. Agh.
Definitely a guarded girl, Vincent noted, the warm smile on his face not wavering even one bit. When she finished talking, he chuckled a bit. Everything she said sounded so clipped. Well, it wasn't like he was going to back off. He loves talking to people. "Half call me Vince, some Vincent. I introduce myself as Vincent just so it would be homogeneous. I kinda get things mixed up, since I have a cousin named Vince." He said, aiming for a small chit chat. He wasn't close to other princes and princesses, so other nobilities have to do.
"I swear I've seen you around, can't say where and when though." He added what was in his mind, opting to speak freely instead of thinking of what to say before speaking. "I kinda suck when it comes to remembering."
Kat was still a bit closed to this prince. Gosh, she had to stop being so darn judgmental, it was going to make her look like an immature ruin of a girl in her mid teens. She decided to just forget about the whole ranking system and treat him like she would treat any other teenage boy. She joined him casually in conversation, definitely not flirtatiously, she already had her romance set out for her. She smiled again, thinking of Kenna. She couldn't ever get her out of her mind. "Cool. About 90% of the people here call me Kat. The 10% is the staff and other people above me," She suddenly blushed, remembering that he was above her.
"Well, I run through every hall at least once a day," Kat said with a bit of a laugh, it was true. "You probably wouldn't have time to take a look at what I look like or say hi; I am usually pretty rushed when I go from class to class."
Vincent chuckled a bit, shrugging as he did so. "I hope you don't mind if I ever call you Kat. People usually are so uptight, it's a good thing if someone actually talks to me in class. Just tell me when to shut up though, if it bothers you." He told her, finding it nice when she laughed. Good god. When was the last time someone laughed in front of him? Well, there were other nobilities who stalked and wanted to leech off of him, but those were fake laughs. He could tell it apart anyway. So few can fool him, after all, he's rather good in telling things apart.
"Rushing huh." He said, thinking of how he never really does go rushing. He always had been good when it comes to arranging his time table, or maybe it's because of his status. "Maybe that's why. I've been here for a long time and I haven't really met everyone." He added.
Kat tried to talk easily with him, it wasn't effortless, but it was still possible to do so. "No, it's fine, just call me Kat, and you can talk to me, I don't mind." Of course, it was a quite odd thing to see a normal girl be talking with a prince. Agh, how she hated that ranking system. Stupid queen, she didn't think about anyone but herself when she put the system into action. She imagined if the queen wasn't born. She could get off the island, have parents to talk to, go home for holidays, visit places around the world. She internally sighed. No, that was never going to happen. She would have to deal with the rules of this stupid school. Well, at least it was fancy - marble bathrooms, mahogany floors everywhere - it wasn't too bad of a place to say.
Vincent caught her off guard, but Kat soon snapped out of her train of thoughts, "Yes, rushing." She paused for a moment, then began a rather rude reply. "Just because you are a fancy-pants prince doesn't mean that the rest of us don't have helpers or planners or things that won't make us rush. You," she pointed her finger at him, "Are one of the few people that probably never rushes, and that's not us nobles' problem!"
Just when Vincent thought he finally got the Kat-girl to somehow warm up to him, like taming a wild cat, she snapped. Well, there's always complications. He winced, and gave her a sheepish smile in response. Whether a girl, a boy, or anyone, he would never be angry. Look angry, that is. "It's not my fault I have my status, and I rush too, perhaps not as often as you do though." He told her, backing off and holding up his hands in defeat. He showed no sign of anger or annoyance, because that's how it's supposed to be.
"Look, I'm sorry if I offended you." He apologized, the smile on his face dropping a bit so he wouldn't look like he's kidding. "It was totally not my intention." He added for good measure because it was true. He wasn't expecting the quiet girl to suddenly blast and blow up.
Kat got angry. Really angry. How was it not his fault he has his status. She would love to be a duchess - but a princess? That would be amazing. Vincent talked about being a prince like it was nothing. The statuses tore people apart - if two noblemen were best friends, they were probably enemies after one became a prince. And the prince only had five other prince and princesses to turn to, so the nobleman was probably the luckier one.
Kat was tired of talking with this oh-so-elegant prince. "Oh, no poor you. You were made the highest rank possible for a student to achieve. You have such a rough life," She bitterly spat. "Now, before you have to princely apologize, I am going to leave!" She quickly went to her dorm, shut the door, and locked it.
Vincent blinked when the girl shut the door and practically left him there standing. Well, that was half-unexpected. He wanted to be friends, too. After a few seconds of looking at her door, he walked away without any hesitation. When he reached a far enough place though, he broke into snickers. What a bitch!, he thought as he tried not to laugh out loud. No wonder she's just a noble. Some peasants are even nicer than her.
