I know what you mean Camille. I was so excited when I heard about the movie, but when it was over I thought to myself, "Maybe I'd better reread the book. I don't remember things this way." It's amazing what they can do to a book as they put it on screen. I liked both, but I enjoyed the book more.
Did you see that "The Confession" by Beverly Lewis has been made into a musical that's being performed in Shipshewana, Indiana? An Amish musical, sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Oh, I did not know that book was also a movie. I have purchased the book for my kindle but I have not read it yet. I added the movie to my netflix queue! Thanks for mentioning it!

The movie contained many sterotypical elements that spoiled it for me...the same way the screenwriter did in Amish Grace.

It wasn't made into a movie, just the book & the live musical.

When I read the book I was sent the updated movie version of the book where they included "stills" from the movie set, etc., even though the story in the book remained the same. In it, Beverly Lewis write a letter to the readers about the movie in which she says that she knows the book and the movie are very different, but she felt the message she wanted to convey still translated in the movie. She didn't say how much control she had over the content of the movie though...
No problem Sandy! That's what I love about this group, our collective knowledge is so much more thorough than any individual's knowledge could be. I haven't had the chance to meet any of these wonderful authors but I hope that someday I will!

Kristy, the only thing true about Amish Grace was the tragedy of the little girls getting shot...the character that Kimberly Paisley played was not one of the mothers. It was the screenwriter's made up character to show us how someone MIGHT have felt in such a situation but the Amish did not react in the way she portrayed. The book by several professors who who are experts on the Amish and with whom the Amish cooperated is so, so much better than the movie. The authors did not give their permission for the book to be filmed out of deference to the families but their contract didn't give them the right to refuse. So they donated all the profits from the movie to charity (I believe they did so with the profits from the book as well).
It could have been such a good movie and taught people so much. But "Hollywood" got hold of it (and didn't do their research...there were so many mistakes about the Amish in it). I learned a lot from the book. Check it out from the library if you're interested in the Amish and forgiveness. You won't be sorry -- the book is amazing.
I read Saving Sarah Cain after I watched the movie. The movie was filled with Amish inconsistencies, which drove me crazy, but all in all I enjoyed it very much! :)
there's also inconsistencies in the movie of the shunning based on Beverly Lewis's book the Shunning
Oh, and I really liked the book. The movie was way different. :l
Yes, The Shunning had the same problems. A little distracting to those of us who know better! And the main actress had wa-a-a-y beyond too much eye makeup, especially for an Amish girl.
ok . . . now I'm conflicted. I have 'The Shunning' dvd sitting next to me and was planning on watching it tomorrow evening, but if there are so many glaring inconsistencies, I wonder if I'll enjoy it?
The movie was pretty good... me and my friend watched it and we both read the book. But we both agree the book is much better.
The inconsistencies are annoying, but if you ignore them, you'll enjoy the movie. :)
I think you just have to take books to movies with a grain of salt. I appreciated them both, but basically had to treat them like they were unrelated.

I was wondering if anyone has read The Redemption of Sarah Cain by Beverly Lewis, and if so, have you seen the movie made about the book, Saving Sarah Cain? What did you think of the differences between the two?
Personally, I was surprised at how vastly different the two were, but I enjoyed both individually. Except for the character names I felt they could have been two entirely different and unrelated works of Amish fiction...
