I started reading this book a couple days ago and I have to say I was surprised it was set in a spaceport based on Indian and Thai cultures .... I so rarely see science fiction based on non-western culture that it's always surprising when I do stumble into it.

Overall, the cultural mix on a station of 25million added extra grittiness to the book. Also, I like that Brown didn't go overboard with too much of a cyberpunk feel while still keeping it grungy.

Donna (donnahr) I was immediately reminded of Bladerunner. You're right, it's nice to see a non-western cultural focus.

yeah .. I do see Bladerunner in there - just with more curry. :)

I didn't get the Blade Runner vibe. Of course, I last saw the film on opening night in the 80s, so distant memories of a forgettable film might be forgivable.

oooh .. I won't tell my partner you said it was forgettable. Its' one of his favorites and i'm sure he'd be willing to geek out and explain to you exactly why it's unforgettable. :D

Eric (proggyboog) Funny you mention the non-western setting. This is the 2nd SF book I've read in four months based on a future culture that's at least part Thai. (The Windup Girl is the other.)
