Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) We saw this yesterday. Without getting too spoilerish, I would say this is a trippy and pretty disturbing movie. I wasn't quite sure how I felt about it. We had a good discussion on the way home, and my sister and I had more negative feelings about the movie. My mother championed it. I don't think it was bad, but somethings felt sort of pointless. It has a bit of a nihilistic tone, Darwinistic outlook. The special effects were very good. The acting was pretty decent. Overall, I guess I'd rate it a B+, although I probably wouldn't want to watch this very often.

Has anyone else seen this?

CaliGirlRae (rae_l) | 67 comments I want to see this but haven't gotten around to it yet. I heard snippets about the ending here and there but didn't pursue further to see what happens exactly. Was it a bit of a downer ending, Danielle?

I heard the trailer was completely different than what the movie presented also.

new_user | 755 comments I haven't seen this, but I was curious. At first it just seemed like another alien invasion/disaster movie, but it doesn't sound like that from what you're saying. Typically I would welcome the news that this is controversial or thought-provoking, but nihilistic/Darwinistic sounds like it might just be saying another species will come along that's bigger and badder, LOL. That's so old. Not a new thought at all...

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Rae, I think the ending being a downer depends on your perspective. If you want to know exactly what happens, you can PM me and Wikipedia has the whole plotline posted.

NU, I am not a big fan of alien invasion movies. I will watch them b/c I watch most sci-fi movies. I think this has some unique aspects in that genre. I think there was some disgusting elements that really disturbed me. Compared to the aliens coming and nuking the world, this was more of an Borg or Invasion of the Body-Snatchers scenario. You are more into the thought-provoking movies than I am, so you might enjoy it. To me, it was sort of pointless in a way.

new_user | 755 comments I saw this today. There was nothing else. I thought it was so lame, LOL. Nothing happened until the last twenty minutes of the film. You can only rehash the same conflict so many times without making progress before it gets tired. "Should we stay or should we go, should we stay or should we go?"

Also, the acting was only worthy of a made-for-TV movie, LOL. So there was nothing carrying this. I recommend seeing something else.

I know what you thought was disgusting, Danielle, and I probably would have been disturbed and interested too, if the execution hadn't been so poor I didn't even care by then! LOL.

Also, some people may have heard that this borrowed from a lot of previous films. That is true. There is a scene that may as well be copy/pasted from War of the Worlds -you remember hiding from the tentacles- and the rest is influenced by anime, LOL. (Which may have been influenced by previous American films. I wouldn't know, I don't like this war of the species/alien invasion type.) It's not even as good as Cloverfield, to which it's been compared. D:

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I didn't like Cloverfield, so that's not a good thing, if you thought it was better than this.

AH From the trailer, it looked like a ripoff of Independence Day and War of the Worlds. I like sci-fi movies, but this one didn't even tempt me.

new_user | 755 comments LOL, Danielle. Didn't like Cloverfield at all? It's the same style but better directed and acted, tighter and with more purpose. I thought it was all right. I think my expectations were low, but it was different at least than a typical alien invasion film. It was more about people, in the same way Blair Witch was more about people than the witch.

AH, my sister-in-law was expecting Independence Day too, but there was very little action and the only resemblance was that we saw F-16s shooting at alien ships. It was a little better than playing Metroid, I guess. It did have some echoes of War of the Worlds.

It's too bad because I know scifi fans are eager to see more scifi movies they can love, but I don't think this is quite that.

AH No one seems to make any original movies any more. Sci fi can be such a fun genre to watch. There just doesn't seem to be enough good films out there.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I thought Cloverfield was stupid, personally. Different strokes. I didn't love this movie, but I didn't hate it. It's not my cup of tea, really. I agree the acting and the script could have been better, but it wasn't bad for an invasion movie. I didn't think it was all that trite. Yes, it did borrow from movies in the past, but most movies do. There is nothing new under the sun, it's just applying the known and shaping something different out of it.

CaliGirlRae (rae_l) | 67 comments Ack! Sorry Danielle, just saw your message here. Thanks for the offer! I got to see the movie and was...disappointed. I was so looking forward to this because I wanted an awesome all out crazy alien invasion movie and got Cloverfield meets Gossip Girl by way of Independence Day. Meh. I know they filmed it this way to keep a low budget but I would have loved a different POV than the normal everyday (boring) lead characters and more in the way of the aliens. Plus it didn't help that I kept thinking of Ed Wood during the scene when Balfour was pummeling the rubber alien suit (ermm)

AH, I thought it was just me but I have to agree. Not much out there to see anymore by way of good movies. Help me Tron Legacy, you're my only hope.

new_user | 755 comments Oh, I'm looking forward to Tron!

message 13: by AH (new)

AH Tron did look good.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I'll look forward to your thoughts on Tron Legacy. I'm interested, but you'll probably see it before I do.
