I hope everyone enjoys this book. My library has all of her books except this one, so I won't be joining you this time around. It looks like a good one, though!

I'm still waiting for my copies of this months choices to arrive - the knee deep snow here in England is causing havoc with...well pretty much everything really!!! - hopefully my books will arrive some time this week and I can kick off some conversation topics. In the meantime, please enjoy your reading.

Bronwyn (nzfriend) | 651 comments I'm nearly done with chapter one, but I've two papers to finish for wednesday so it's taken a bit of a backseat at the moment. I've enjoyed what I've read so far though. :)

Jan C (woeisme) | 1526 comments I think I'm on Chapter 4.

The book is turning out to be a little more surveyish than I would have liked. But I am finding it interesting.

Jill H. (bucs1960) Hi all.....I just joined this group. I have read and reviewed this book. I liked it but you might want to read my review (for what it's worth).

Linda2 Jill, your review looks familiar. Have you mentioned those errors in another group, to which I replied, "Probably poor editing" ?

message 8: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) Indeed I did Rachelle......you have a good memory. I think it was in "Pet Peeves" over on the James Mason Group.

Linda2 I didn't get around to reading this book, but maybe the errors will be fixed for the next printing. I'm sure Flapper will overlap some of the same territory.

Jill H. (bucs1960) I hope they correct the obvious errors....they tend to minimize a good book.

Linda2 And welcome to the group!

Jill H. (bucs1960) Thank you.....sorry I misspelled your name....I have a friend named Rachelle.

Bronwyn (nzfriend) | 651 comments Ultimately I enjoyed the book. The comments you made struck me as well. The Zukor I only knew from just having watched a program on TCM, but the Babe Ruth I knew. There were also a number of editing errors that bothered me, but maybe that's just me.

Like I said though, I did enjoy it. It wasn't super in depth, but it was enjoyable. Funnily, looking through her bibliography, a number of the books she cited I'm reading for a class next term (off hand I remember Under the Mask of Chivalry about the Klan and one about the Scopes trial). My favorite chapters were still the movie star and flapper ones. I'm hoping Flapper will have more of what I'm looking for and be a bit more of a... professional? read. Moore's book just seemed a bit amateur.

Nigeyb Anything Goes A Biography Of The Roaring Twenties by Lucy Moore

I was just looking around for a suitable book on the 1920s to nominate for our non-fiction read for June 2013, and found this very book.

As I was about to pat myself on the back, I thought I'd better check if we'd done it already and...what do you know? Here it is.

It doesn't seem to have stimulated much of a debate either which is surprising to me as most of the reviews I've come across are very positive, and it so squarely focusses on our era.

I plan to read it anyway - so will report back.

For what it's worth, it was whilst reading Shopping, Seduction & Mr. Selfridge in readiness for the forthcoming May 2013 discussion, that I was reminded just how much I enjoyed reading about the 1920s.

I know Lucy Moore's book is exclusively concerned with the US. I hope to find another non-fiction book that gives more of a UK perspective - anyone got any recommendations?

Jan C (woeisme) | 1526 comments Have you read Robert Graves' The Long Week End: A Social History of Great Britain, 1918-1939?

I'm still reading Anything Goes.

No. Is it any good? Robert Graves is a great writer (well based on Goodbye To All That).

What's it like Jan?

That doesn't sound good. I've read quite a few promising reviews though so might still give it a go.

Jan C (woeisme) | 1526 comments I read it a number of years ago when I was in college. I think I liked it then although I was a history major and thus more used to boring books. But I recently picked it up from Powell's. I haven't yet gotten to reading it again though.

I can't flip through it right now because I'm on vacation in NC.
