Najd M (najdm) | 18 comments Hello readers,
Lots of you must be having a hard time choosing the prefect books to read in one week, as I.
I'd recommend classics, like Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre.
Medium length stories are quite perfect to me but I couldn't find the perfect plot.
Share your recommendations down in the comment section, they might help. :D

Mohammed (thesunsea) | 2 comments For those who havent read it yet, The Ultimate HItchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Books 1-5) by Douglas Adams is a MUST. I guarantee that you never read something this funny. For something a bit shorter but just as funny, Sh*t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern is pretty good.

Those looking for an intellectual and thought-provoking read, Albert Camus's The Plague and The Stranger are the kind of books that make you stop, think and blow your mind away.

Johara Almogbel | 71 comments Ahem. Reviewed and improved list:
1- Anything by Jasper Fforde. He has the Thursday Next series, which are by far one of the best books I've read. A Series of Nursery Crimes aren't that bad either.

2-For classics: Wuthering Heights, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Mansfield Park, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, Much Ado About Nothing, Gullivers Travels, and a personal favorite- Around the World in 80 Days.

3-Holes, if u've never read that (it's YA, and awesome)

4- George Orwell's 1984. It's a cult classic for a reason, mostly awesomeness. Nuff said.

6-for romance novels-Whitney, My Love.
I am bound by the codes of cheesy historical romance novel mentioned on p.34 of the Book of General Fluffy Conduct to enlighten the masses about the importance of this life-changing and emotion-wrecking piece of literature. Don't scoff, you book snob. Tis blasphemy to laugh at which you did not read!

7-If you like alternate universes where oligarchian regimes rule (ala 1984), there's The Hunger Games, The Last Book in the Universe, and Shades of Gray (the latter by Jasper Fforde)

8- the incident of the dog at midnight.

9- Lord of the Rings. Tedious but enjoyable read. Doubly awesome when paired with the movies.

11- Anton Chekhov I like his short stories.

12- Wake. And Book 2, Fade. Girly stuff. But fun.

13- Cyrano de Bergerac. French book, find a good English translation.

14- ثمانون عاما بحثا عن مخرج
If you do not read this book, then I feel sorry for you. First Arabic book I ever actually get into. The ONLY Arabic book I read in one sitting.

If I think of any more, I'll let you guys know...

I think foreign translated fiction does not get the hype it deserves. Here's a couple I absolutely love and think EVERYONE should read:

Perfume, by Patrick Suskind.
Blindness, by Jose Saramago.

Also, a light interesting read I enjoyed during IT classes:
The White Tiger, by Adiga Aravind.

If you've never read anything by Chuck Palahniuk, you should… I read Fight Club and Survivor so far, and both are great.

Those are the books I'd recommend to others knowing that they'll enjoy them (well, hopefully)… the other books I love might not be loved as much by others so I didn't mention them.

message 15: by Yara (new)

Yara | 15 comments Ok guys help me out here.

I really want to read The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

I read the Kite Runner's synopsis when the movie came out. My problem is with the heart-breaking bits in the stories, I just can't get past them no matter how "happy" the outcome is.

So my question is, is the book sooooooooooooo worth reading even though my heart and guts will physically hurt when i read the sad parts? And is the other book as sad coz i have like a really REALLY weak heart for tragic events :"(

message 16: by 1412 (new)

1412 (monkeyseemonkeydo) Kristin Cashore
Read Fire and Graceling by her.
Patrick Ness
I like all his books, but mostly the Chaos Walking series.
Eoin Colfer
The Artemis Fowl series.
Anthony Horowitz
Every one of his books stink EXCEPT for the Alex Rider series.
Stieg Larsson
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Just so you know, these are all young adult books that kids age 13-20 might find interesting. Fire and Graceling are a bit... inappropriate though. So is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

message 17: by Johara (new)

Johara Almogbel | 71 comments I agree on the Artemis Fowl series(^^_)
May be for children, but Eoin Colfer writes characters wonderfully:D

message 18: by Yara (new)

Yara | 15 comments Joahara. I don't know a single soul who knows Whitney My Love! i thought i was the only one! it's so cheesy and infuriating and soooooooo brings out the fiminist in me mwahahahaha, but then again so do all of her books. I read it when i was about 17-18 lol

you brought back some good ole high school memories :D

message 19: by Johara (new)

Johara Almogbel | 71 comments :D I know, it is cheesy-ish, isn't it? But as for the feminist in me, she shuts up and enjoys the story with all the other mes(^^_)

Meh. I'm a sucker for inaccurate historical romance novels, what can I say?:D

message 20: by Yara (new)

Yara | 15 comments Have u read Danielle Steel's Rememberance?

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/77...

I highly recommend it for suckers such as you and I ;)

message 21: by Johara (new)

Johara Almogbel | 71 comments Really? I never really got enthusiastic about Danielle Steel, but I'll take up ur recommendation anyhow(^^_)

Have you ever read anything by Janet Evanovich? Her Stephanie Plum series are awesome, and I think ur inner feminist would enjoy it as well!:D

message 22: by Yara (new)

Yara | 15 comments I try to steer clear of series, coz i honestly have no time to keep track. I barely keep track of the frequency of my kids' bath-time! lol

message 23: by Yara (new)

Yara | 15 comments My inner feminist is quite satisfied these days by the Millinium Trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...etc.) the 2nd one in the series is the best though.

message 24: by Johara (new)

Johara Almogbel | 71 comments Yeah, I heard of those, they seem interesting!

But no, seriously you need to pick up one of the Stephanie plum books, you don't necessarily have to read them in order, and they really are funny:D
Hmmm... Start off with Lean Mean Thirteen, that was where I picked them up:D

message 25: by 1412 (new)

1412 (monkeyseemonkeydo) Hm... I'm kinda young for these kinds of books, so I like kiddie stuff. Anyways, I always go for series because you don't have to look for a new book.

message 26: by Johara (new)

Johara Almogbel | 71 comments If you like series, Wonhee, try put the Bobby Pendragon ones.
But I gotta warn you... The books start out interesting enough and really enjoyable, but by the fifth book or so everything goes sour... For me at least.

Also, I recommend Goose Girl, and A Book of a Thousand Days if you like fairytale adaptations. They're age appropriate, and a great read.

The Enchanted Castle, by E. Nesbitt, is a really good classic if you're looking for something interesting.

Hope that helps!

message 27: by 1412 (new)

1412 (monkeyseemonkeydo) Thx. You know, series are better if you don't want to bother for a new book, but in content, a novel is better. (or atleast in my opinion.)

message 28: by Yara (new)

Yara | 15 comments Wonhee, If you're into the supernatural or minor horror, try the Christopher Pike collection.

I loved those when i was younger :)

message 29: by 1412 (new)

1412 (monkeyseemonkeydo) thx!

message 30: by Johara (new)

Johara Almogbel | 71 comments Oh! And Skulduggery Pleasant! Don't be put off by the title like I was, I think you'll really enjoy the series... And they're a series!:D

message 31: by 1412 (new)

1412 (monkeyseemonkeydo) :)

message 32: by Sana (new)

Sana (sano) Wonhee, you should probably check out the Tiffany Aching series; it's quite hilarious. Oh and then there's The Secret Garden, a must read if you haven't already discovered it.

I just started reading the Stephanie plum series and i love it! I picked one up not knowing what to expect, and was presently surprised. The rest of the series will definitely be on my list for 2011

Water for Elephants - Sara Gruen
Plain Truth - Jodi Picoult
The Guardian - Nicholas Sparks
Where the Heart Is - Billie Letts

I can't wait to start this challenge :)

Peter Medley | 1 comments The Perfect Deceit

An intriguing and fascinating book on how countries vie against each other to be top dog on the world stage. Spies, double agents, love triangles -- it’s all in a day’s work for super spy Alexey! In today’s interconnected world, this book gives an interesting perspective on how much competition goes on behind the scenes with ambitions and stakes running high. Hearts are broken and for some power is gained.

Illuminating book on the espionage sphere. Lots of mind games involved. Great book with high drama. Makes for a perfect summer read!
