Alanna teaches Ishak a lesson with weaving magic. Mari starts to teach them weaving; Farda teaches them about healing and herbs. Meanwhile, Coram returns with letters from her brother, Myles, and George.
Hillmen come to attack one day and Alanna calls for her three shamans-in-training to help. The hillmen are defeated, but two are badly wounded. Alanna heals one to the point of giving away too much magic.
While asleep, Ishak steals her sword. When she sees him, she has a quick vision. Ishak is unable to control the magic in the sword and dies.
