Alex stood uncomfortably in the crowd, watching the Reaping. The thought hadn't crossed his mind that it might be him.

Sam slipped in having just run away. This was her real home

His eyes flitted to the girl who had seemed to appear next to him, then were drawn again to the mayor of district 6, who was now on a platform in front of the population.

"Ok our two people are Alex and Sam!"

Sam gulped and stepped foward her face pale

Alex. No, surely not him. Surely not. Wasn't there another Alex? Then his face went pale as the mayor looked directly at him. He pasted a nonchalant expression on his face and stepped towards the mayor.

Sam looked at Alex as if seeing him for the first time. She kept her face blank. Everyone was silent. "Well there we go!"the mayor said. 4 peacekeppers came and took Alex and Sam to a room. The mayor walked in. "Since you will need to work together and you don't have to be at the Capital for a few days, you will be spending every moment with eachother. Sleeping in the same room,meals, everything!"Mayor said. He nodded then left.

Sam stared her eyes agrey

He stared at the other girl, the girl who was pulled into this craziness with him. The girl who would die or win. And if she won... That would mean he'd be dead. Would Alex have to kill this girl for even the slightest chance of coming back to his district alive?

Her face was impassive. He couldn't tell if she was sad, frightened, or anything. Well, might as well get to know her, if she was going to be all he had for the next few days, as the mayor said. "Hi." Alex's voice seemed small and insignificant, definitely not the way he'd like a person's first impression of him to be. That one word echoed in the empty room, the room as empty as his hopes of one day working for the Capitol and having plenty of food and whatever he needed. "Well... as you know, I'm Alex. If I'm going to be stuck with you for an indefinite amount of time, I'd like to get to know you. You know, as a person. Before..." Alex trailed off, leaving his meaning hanging in the empty, empty air between them. Before we may have to kill each other. He stuck out his hand for her to shake, hoping to ease the tension a little.

Sam looked and finally smiled. Her eyes lit up and shook it. "Sam"she said smiling. "And I agree we should get to know eachother

Alex ran away to District one.
