Do you have any ideas about how to improve our group, make it more fun? Would you be interested in reading challenges or other group activities? Please post your suggestions here.

If someone who's read a book they loved might post a list of themes or maybe a 'If You've Read This Book ____, you might like this book ______ because _________. '
Yeah, reading challenges sound fun. I usually read books in a day, maybe the group would be better if we had a weekly (or fortnightly) book change? That's just me though, other people may take a bit longer to finish a book.

It is a little easier this way I think. If you liked a book and would like to read something like it, members might be able to give you specific recommendations.
i love the first reading challenge and would love to do more like put them right after the last one finishes because i always like to look at what others are reading and stuff
I think it would be easier to follow the challenge opening an additional thread so everyone can post their progress.
Short Story competitionsWe all love reading and reading gives us knowledge. Reading extends our vocabulary. I only know what I know because I read books. But what good are all these new words if we don't use them? Let us challenge our avid readers to make a collection of short stories to share with the rest of the world. Rewards for the best story could be something like choosing the genre for the monthly book, or choosing the monthly book itself. And, of course, praise from other people :)
A great way to extend our awesomeness. And our writing.
I would be in for some reading challenges; I read at least a few a month. Suggestions would be themes, or things like, read a book by a new author, a 2011 debut, etc
I think it would be cool to have a worst list... worst of 2011 or like just a warning page of books people didnt like and why, you have to say why... because sometimes i wish i wouldve been warned away from some books....i know you can read the reviews on goodreads, but it takes a long time to scroll through it all... just a thought :)
In the past when we read more then one book it doesn't get any more participation. In fact each book gets less participation if there is more then one. Also both of us moderators read every book we pick that way it makes the reading experience for group members more fun and if there were too many books a month we probably wouldn't be able to do that. Feel free to join in one of the discussions for one book of the month and see what you think!
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this question, so please let me know if there is a better thread.I read a great YA book a couple of years ago and can't remember the title or author and was hoping someone may know it. It was the first of a series (trilogy I believe). It began with twins in a village/settlement. Soldiers come riding in, kill everyone except the twins. The brother they take to the city and the girl is believed to be dead and left behind. She eventually makes her way to a larger village where she is (here my memory gets fuzzy) housed with other kids and "experiments" are conducted on them. The whole time she can "feel" her brother and knows he is still alive but can't actually communicate with him. I'm fairly sure the book jacket indicated that the author lives in the northwest and it seems to me his name is somewhat gender neutral, as I remember thinking the author was a woman until I read the author info. Thanks! :)
Sorry I don't know this book. However for more help you should move this down into Personalized Recommendations in What's the Name of that Book? query. For more additional help there is an actual group on GoodReads dedicated to this task entitled What's The Name of That Book??? located with the following link

Thanks! I didn't think I had my question in the correct place.
I had a question about book discussions. Can we add discussion threads for this month's book even if we aren't the moderator?

Hello, I was just curious when the new challenges are typically listed. If they are listed the day they begin or if they are listed earlier, later? I'm new and just wasn't sure!
thank you! Love the group!!
They are listed a few days before. So this next one will start right before Sept. 1st. I am new to leading it so wish me luck!!
Hi guysIs it worth advetising the Goodreads Choice Awards. I just stumbled across it. http://www.goodreads.com/choiceawards...
I'm sure lots of member would have ideas for the YA books
I Can't find this book anywhere! barns and noble sold out, the public library has 3 books but has a 13 placed hold on it and the school libary has just placed it on order! WHY ME!!!!!
Don't worry... the discussion goes on all month and even when the book of the month discussion is over the discussions are still open and you can discuss the books at any time.
I am looking for YA ebooks written by Goodreads authors. Can anyone recommend any, or is there a place on Goodreads to easily find them?
hummmm... we have a section with books from goodreads authors: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...
these are usually authors who want to get their books out there and might be a good place to start. I really can't find a place on goodreads that lists the authors that have registered. Which I am surprised they don't have one!

Hi folks I need some help to find some good collections of contemporary short stories which could be used with a class( home group/ tutor group) - teacher reads students listen. Any suggestions welcome - for use with classes ages between 12 and 16. (Yrs 7,8,9,10,11 in UK). I can think of lots of novels but no short stories apart from Roald Dahl.
Well, recently a number of young adult authors, including Veronica Roth--author of Divergent--, released a collection of short stories called Shards and Ashes. These short stories are all of the dystopia genre and I have not read it yet, but it has gotten mostly positive reviews.
You should post this in the member's chat section of the group Anna... you will get more answers there. Thanks!
Thanks Angie I'll try that.Hi Stormy thanks for the suggestion. I've read some Veronica Roth, Melissa Marr and Kelly Armstrong but not heard of the collection. Is it suitable for school do you think 15-16 yr olds? (Kelley Armstrong can be a bit racy.)
I'm pretty sure it is suitable for that age genre. At bookstores it's under the category of young adult so it should be ok
Beth wrote: "Where can we vote for the book we're going to read next? I can never find the voting section thingy..."
The voting goes up every month on the 20th. You can click the polls link on the right side of the homepage to see the newest polls. They are usually up about 6 days.
