I read The Wind Done Gone because I wanted to get the perspective of the former slaves of Tara. It seemed to be the missing piece in the narrative. Rather than address the anachronistic portrayal of slaves, happy with their lot in life, Randall approaches the story as one with a grievance to be redressed. She cruelly twists the characters until they are unrecognizable. The extensive discussions on this board of race, and Mitchell's depiction of slavery in the novel have been intelligent and well-researched. They give the reader an appreciation for what Mitchell intended, and belie the charge of racism. Randall's story can best be summed up by Shakespeare: "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."
The only other thing I got from reading TWDG was that everyone wants some Rhett action!
