For any author, it is difficult to perceive what others might not like about his or her novel. So, what are some things that you hate to see in books, hate that some authors do, and some other pet peeves. It sure will help me out.

RedPath | 68 comments Abrupt, no-pay off endings.

I read a book like that recently. Made me angry, because it had some sort of reward.

For example: one thing that drives me up the wall is when the author says that his or her character is super beautiful, strong, or the only one with a talent...

I hate that too.

Antje གརས པཅ Parker When you hint at a relationship between two characters throughout the whole book then stick them with someone else

I hate when there are 2-page-long descriptions of something completely insignificant.

Amina (journalistam) I hate all the stuff you said: but the worst are cliffhangers. grrr...

Adela Clancy I hate it when an author writes a series and the main character is in a relationship with one person that their happy with and they just screw it up for no reason and cheat on the person or have an insignificant fight and break up. Then the main character ends up with someone else that they flirted with shamelessly through the series and that you never really liked.
Or when the main character just doesn't end up with who I want them to and they have this stupid 'let's be friends after we had all these random make-out sessions' relationship.
Love interests are always a touchy subject in books for me because if I'm not sold on the love interest's relationship then I'm not sold on the book.
Like City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. I had a minor mental breakdown at the end of that book, but I kept reading the rest of the series and now it's one of my favorites.<3

Jen | 347 comments i hate when authors rush into things. i also dont like when the MC actions dont match up w/ their age

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I hate it when all but the last three chapters of the book are exposition.

Sandy Hyatt-James (sandyhyatt-james) Re Jen's comment about author's rushing into things, the problem is, agents and publishers expect you to do just that. Getting to the point is much preferred to taking time about it, otherwise the reader might get bored. As a writer myself, I'm always trying to trike the correct balance between the two.

Parallel Triangle
