i don't know but that's a good qustion.
I had a friend visit Romania. Transylvaina,Styria, are both states of Romania. Named after the Romani people a good part of whom are gypsies. Romani is a name the gypsies use for themselves. There are at least five Casltle Draculas in Romania. Just read any Romanian tour guide.
The best book on the origins of vampires is "The Phantom World a treaties on vampires and revelants" by Dom Augustine Calmet. It discusses the Magia Posthuma which you just can't find in print, and other early gothic vampire folk lore and documented true stories. The cheapest copy I could find was $73.OO plus shipping. So I am going to have to save a few more pennies. This book is without a doubt the last word on the real origins, and beliefs surrounding western Gothic vampirism as depicted in Moravia, Stytria, Transylvania, and other Romanian states cira 1700 to 1850. I have read some pieces of it, and it is the source for real deal info. A book every real vampire fan should have in their library.
The more I read The Phantom World the more I realize how much Carmilla,Dracula, and vampire folk lore owe to this strange piece of literature. "We just had in this part of Hungary a scene of vampirism. An officer of the Emperors troops at Graditz was there". Gradtz is a town specifically mentioned in Dracula.
More from The Phantom World: In a certain canton of Hungary beyond the waters of the Tibisk lies the territory of Tokay and Transylvannia. The people there called Heyducqs believe that certain dead persons, whom they call vampires, suck the blood of the living,so that they become visibly attenuated while the vampires like leeches, fill themselves with blood. This story was written circa 1728 and included in The Phantom World. Braum Stoker most certainly read this book.
I am 53,and have been reading vampire stories since I first read Carmilla in Catholic Boys School,LOL. Most people like the series books. Its a trend now days after Twilight came out. Sookie Stackhouse books have a lot of influence from Buffy the vampire slayer. The Phantom world is my reference book. It is not a vampire story. It is a book written by a French Monk Augustine Calmet. It is his dissertation on God and his relation to, Angels, Daemons, Witches, Vampires, and Ghosts.
I like The Phantom world real well. First of all you can tell that Sheridan La Fanu who wrote Carmilla and Braum Stoker who wrote Dracula read The Phantom World. It is how Dracula got the place name Transylvania. In Latin Transylvannia means "the Land beyond the trees". So yeah its interesting. It also has part of a more ancient work called "The Magia Posthuma", Latin for The Magic Afterlife. The Magia Postuma was written in 1700 by an Austrian Lawyer sent to Romania by the Duke of Austria to investigate Vampire slayings. The Lawyer goes to the village of Blau to ivestigate a series of murders by a Shepard turned Vampire. The Sheppard is seen by both night and day and kills many people. Finaly he is dug up and his body found to be uncorrupted. So upon this proof of vampirism they stake him down into his grave. This awakens him and he says "Thanks for the stick to beat of the dogs with". That night the Sheppard arises and kills as many people as he can. The next day or so he is seen in daylight and captured. Then turned over to the town exocutioner and hacked to bits which are tossed on a fire. That's the end of the Vampire Sheppard of Blau. There are a couple other stories from the Magia Postuma. It is also from the Magia Posthuma that Calmet gets the description of Transylvainia and its Vampires. Yeah I would say it is an interesting book. Come to think of it.
Romania is the ultimate destination of any serious vampire enthusiast. It is where the Western and Christian myth of Vampires orriginated
A friend of mine visited Romania. He said there were like four of five Castle Draculas. It may sound a bit much. But in real life Vlad the Impaler did indeed keep several Castles in Romania.
Vlad was a rich evil warlord. It was Vlad and his line of castles and fortifications along the borders of present day Bosnia/Herzegovina and Bulagria that held back the Turks in those countries from overuning Romania. So he is a Romanian hero, and the reason Romania is Catholic and not mixed Muslim,Catholic like Bosnia.
Yeah times change, and being unchanging myself. I have to remind myself it is 2009. People don't see vampires as evil and cursed but as super hero's and romantic figures. One woman even wrote a series book about vegitarian vampires. People actually read this book. Can you believe it? Silly fools let them keep reading and believing their silly rubish. One of these days the real thing is going to bite them in the ass. What a rude awakening they will have,LOL.
u mean a real evil vampire is going to come along n bit every person in the but that read those books n believe themi read them n like them coz they r different but i do also read the origonals n like them too :D
Not them as every single one. Them as a collective metaphor. As in they will all come to realize. I am a real stickler about what vampire books I like. As for as modern Series Books. Sooke Stackhouse is the only one that I can stand. But it's my problem. Old school Gothic vampire short stories are my faves. The Tomb of Sarah and For the Blood is the Life,The Mystery of the Campagna. Books like Dracula, Carmilla. There is so much stuff to read if I was not picky in the vampire books that I read. Well then that is all I would have the time to read. I cant allow that there is just to much other litereature to read. Like The Man Easting Leopard of Rudrapryag. That will rock your socks. :)
Man the topic is Vampire places to vist. I am so terrible about staying on topic. Places to visit. To me witout a doubt would have to be Romania. Transylvania in particular. Of course Styria which became Yugoslavia, which beame part of the Croatian,Serb,Slovene republic before the commies marched in and changed it to there own little Yugoslovian commie statlellite. Today Štajerska split up into several Statistical Regions
New names for Lower Styria
[edit:] Division into various Statistical Regions
In 2005 Slovenia was divided into 12 statistical regions. Most of the Štajerska area is now divided into the regions of Podravje (Podravska regija), and Savinjsko (Savinjska regija). An area along the Mura region with Ljutomer as center, known historically as Prlekija, has been incorporated in the Mura region (Pomurje or Pomurska regija), and a number of Lower Styrian municipalities including the town of Slovenj Gradec have been attached to Slovene Carinthia (Slovene: Koroška) thereby doubling the latter's area. The name of Štajerska, however, has thus disappeared from official use. For tourism's sake, however, it continues to be employed [2:]. All of these places like Transtylvania and Styrian are in the country of Romania. Thats the place man. To get to specific places. Like the town of Gratz from Dracula, and the state of Transylvania. You just gottah do your homework. Just gottah go to Romania and run that voodoo down!,LOL.
