Classics for Beginners discussion
Introductions
Jane Eyre is definitely my favorite so far, too. However, I'm reading Wuthering Heights this year and I hear it's pretty good. I'm Martha & live in central Illinois in the USA. I've read classics, mostly in my teen years & am just getting back into them and am loving them. Thanks for the invite, Nicolle!
Hi Martha! I am planning on reading Wuthering Heights too, maybe if more people are interested it could be a group read...
I think that might have been mentioned. I enjoy them, but I'm usually slower than everyone else so have to wait to read posts as I don't want to see spoilers. I'm trying to get myself down to just one or 2 books at a time, but that's hard ... I'm at 7 now. :-(
Hi, I'm Diana! I live in the USA. My favorite calssics are The Hound of Baskervilles and Tom Saywer.
Hey!I'm Hayley, also from the UK.
Sorry for the late join Nicolle!
To be honest i've never a lot of classics. The closest to a classic, probably the Catcher in the Rye.
But hopefully this group will give me a push in the right direction!
I've read The Catcher in the Rye and thought it was OK but not brilliant...I'd say it is a modern classic.
Yeah, it wasn't something that kept me hooked. I read Robinson Crusoe when i was about 10 years old. That i finished in one sitting.
Hey, I'm Kjerstin. I have always wanted to read classics, but I keep finding other books to read instead. This group is a perfect place to start reading the books I have been too afraid of reading! My favorites so far are
,
and especially
.Almost all of the classics I've read (including my 4 favorites) are ones I was required to read for school. I love most of them, but for some reason I can't make myself read them by myself!
Hi! I'm Mady and I've just joined the group. I've always been interested in the classics, but somehow never got around to read that many. I want to try to read more of them this year and so finding this group was perfect!Little Women and Alice in Wonderland are among my favourite classics :)
Hi! I'm Flor and I'm from Portugal.I joined this group after my friend Mady.
I love to read but I must confess that I don't/haven't read many classics and I hope that joining this group I can change that :-) I think this group is a perfect way to start :)
Any suggestions? :-)
Hi Mady and Flor! Hope this group meets to your expectations. I love Little Women too, and would suggest Jane Eyre to you Flor.
You make it sound so interesting, I will have to give it a go at some point. I agree about re-reading books, either it doesn't live up to your previous endevor or (the good part) you notice something new which you cannot remember at all from before and it amazes you.
Hi, I'm Shelia. I'm 16 and I live in Texas. I just recently became an avid reader, and I like trying out all sorts of genres. I haven't read very many classics, but Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was my favorite book as a kid.
Hi, Nicolle and others,Its Marts from Trinidad,
Thanks for the group invite, I tend to really enjoy most classics especially those full of mystery and adventure...I welcome the opportunity to be introduced to losts more genres in this area...so its just great to be here...
Hi everyone. I'm Danielle. Thanks for the friendvite, Nicolle. My classic reading is driven more by my particular genre (horror, romance, adventure, fantasy, science fiction) tastes, but I have discovered a treasure trove of good oldies that I am delving into. Great idea for a group!
Hi - I'm Donna, live in Evanston, IL. I've decided to take on the classics in a planned way. I'm going to follow Clifton Fadiman's New Lifetime Reading Plan. My goal is at least one a month, and so far I'm on track. In December, I read the Epic of Gilgamesh. This one was okay, and thankfully, not a long one to start with. This month - I'm working my way through Homer's The Illiad. A little more daunting, but I've finally gotten into it, and am enjoying it. I received great advice from someone to allow myself longer periods of reading so as to get used to the writing, and this is working quite well.
Initially, I was a little overwhelmed with all the names, and trying to keep straight the gods from the mortals, but eventually, I caught on.
Looking forward to posting and would welcome anyone who is following a similar path!
Donna, good luck to you. I am intimidated to read the Iliad. I don't really have the patience for long poems. So, I am impressed with you!
I'll have to go with Danielle, Donna good luck there, I've read Iliad but its only got two stars in my list because I've really got to re-read it.....twice...
Hi everyone! The first books I've ever read were classics. When I was in fourth grade, my family moved to Europe, and in bookstores the only books in English were Puffin classics. So I've read quite a few.
I used to read classics quite a bit but I have lost touch with this genre - Sad when one comes from a long line of women who majored in Classic Lit during their post secondary career... I struggle with appriciating their love of "a good old book"I can't wait to read with everyone here!
Hey. Late welcmes to the new members; and my apologies for not being very active. I've been very busy, it's been a nightmate, not a lot of time to read! =[
I am picking up my copy on wednesday so will start then...can't wait, and hope you enjoy the group Pearlman!
Hi,I am Chang Hyon (aka C.H.) from Korea living in PA, US.
