there is also another kind.. the ethiopian wolf AKA simain fox.

message 10: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments that's probably a subspecies...unless you're talking about the maned wolf... the divisions are really messed up and confusing, even for wolf biologists. sometimes subspecies are combined, and sometimes it turns out a subspecies is really two. new info is constantly coming in.

nops.. not the sub species... ethiopian wolves are only found in euthopia.. thus the name.

message 12: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments yeah, that's a subspecies. there are only two species: red and gray.

message 13: by Lauren (new)

Lauren So, why do you like wolves so much? (not a mean question just curious) Aaaand whats the likley hood of me being aloud to keep one as a pet?...like a hybrid one or whatever they are called lol. And are any in Scotland?

message 14: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments 1. wolves have a lot of awesome qualities: speed, strength, endurance, intelligence, etc. their pack structure and ways of hunting are fascinating. also, they are often discriminated against, and i feel as if i need to set the record straight. to do that, i must learn as much as possible about them.

2. there is no way you could keep a pure wolf as a pet. some ppl do have wolf-dogs, but i do not advise it. hybrids are highly aggressive and unpredictable. many are put down because ppl think, oh cool, a wolf-dog, and don't consider the dangers.

3. there used to be wolves in scotland, i'm sure now. they are being reinstated most places. most European wolves were hunted to extinction, but they're coming back in countries like spain and sweden, i believe.

message 15: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) @Donatello: I'm not 100% sure of this, but I think there always were wolves in Sweden.

Fariha (damn you SketchUp!!) (fariha1234) | 1212 comments Donatello wrote: "yeah, that's a subspecies. there are only two species: red and gray."

er no its not a sub species!

no, one of my wolf books says their just making a recovery...

fariha. i am 100% absolutely positive that there are only two species of wolf. there are many many subspecies.

message 19: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) no, one of my wolf books says their just making a recovery...

When and how?

I know they've been there for some time, it's my neighbour country. I would also like to know where they came from, if they had been hunted to extincion? Did they just magically appear, were they put there or did they wander in from Norway or something like that?

message 20: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments 1. biologists are helping, i guess, and the wolves are reproducing. also, i assume the hunting has stopped.
2. well, "European wolves isn't exactly a subspecies. so it just means most of the European wolves. wolves travel all the time. young wolves usually travel many miles to find their own territory. also, red wolves were supposedly hunted to extinction, but now there are a few packs in southern america.

message 21: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) So, what, they wandered trough Norway amd settled in Sweden?

How long ago. When did they begin to come back from extincion?

message 22: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments they probably came from different countries. wolves aren't hindered by human boundaries. there were probably a few wolves hiding in the woods too.

they were hunted down in the early 1900s. they're just recovering now.

message 23: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) Wait, I found a link.

Apparently they were hunted to extinction around 1970 and made a reapearence in 1977, having wandered from Russia and Finland.

message 24: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments k
point is, there aren't as many as there originally were.

message 25: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) It's not only wolves who have that problem. A lot of other species have thinned out greatly as humans spread.

message 26: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments i know, it's horrible!

message 27: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) Well, we gotta eat. Of course, those animals that are ebing eaten aren't anywhere near extinction so.. Anyway, we should just stop cutting the rainforest down please. That would save a lot of animals, and a lot of enviorment.

message 28: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments well, ppl don't eat wolves. that's what i really hate. humans kill all these animals and all they do is decorate their walls with them, or kill them just because they get in their way.

message 29: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) I would kill a wolf if it threatened to attack me, but I doubt that'll ever happen.

message 30: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments right. they only attack when provoked

message 31: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments wolves don't have red eyes. and everything is deadly.

Fariha (damn you SketchUp!!) (fariha1234) | 1212 comments lol@red eyes.
