Alright, alright there! I will be up to the task! I like all of them, but I think I can connect to Jane the most because I was an awful lot like her when I was that age. I used to read constantly. To the point that my family would hide books from me during holidays or parties. I also wrote a lot of stories, not quite the Sabrina Starr variety, but I have notebooks full in my storage from my youth.I think what I love about the characters is that all of my students, both boys and girls, seem to relate to at least one of the girls because of their personalities. I love when I begin reading this book and all my boys sort of groan because they think it's a "girl book" and then they meet Skye and it's all over. :)
Hi, everyone. I am a library grad student and read The Penderwicks as part of a kid lit class. It fell into the "nostalgic" literature category.I really liked it. Have not read others in the series yet as library students have to read a heck of a lot of stuff, but I plan to. One area that popped out at me is how kids today seem to have a limited amount of unstructured time as they are rushed between sports, music lessons, etc. One of the appeals of this story is how the kids can run around so freely and with minimal supervision. Do you think this appeal to kids' imagination and creativity is something they can relate to or would too many kids feel at a loss as to how to fill their time?
Hi! I'll join the group too :)I've just read The Penderwicks but I'm going to read the second one as soon as our library gets it! =) The one I read was really good! I liked Batty and her butterfly wings ; )

Thanks you guys for joining! :)
Wow Gloria, you're um... really smart ;) I, at least, can relate to the imagination in the series... and I think other kids can too, unless they think they're "too cool" to like that stuff, or have just matured, like Rosalind.
I love to write and read, like Jane. But I see a lot of Skye in myself, and Gunjari too, even though she won't admit it haha.

You are completely like skye. The way you're always pessimistic and stuff??? Yeah. That's skye right there for ya.
Um... I could just walk to your house ... and barge in ... but then your mom would get all freaked out... oh well...

that's the point! like, i knew that you were going but all of a sudden, you're like, "I'M IN HAWAII NOW!!!!"
Uhm haha.. actually we have some quite embarassing stories about the Penderwicks...
1. Me, Gunj, and Genea (Eugenea) were planning to make a movie based on the story.. I would be Skye, their older sister Blossom would be Rosalind, Gunjari would be Jeffrey (..tee hee..), and Genea would be Jane. And then we couldn't find someone to be Batty, so after debating whether or not their little doll in the piano room could pass for a four year old, we just decided to blow it off...
2. Me and Gunjari kept on asking (ok, nagging) our 6th grade teacher to read the Penderwicks to the class, for about... 4 MONTHS OR SOMETHING RIDICULOUS LIKE THAT... and then when he finally did, about a week before the year ended, we had practically memorized every word of it, and got all mad at him for skipping the part where Jane says, "Pair Caravel!" because he couldn't pronouce it.
...Yeah. Those are true. Gunjari's probably going to kill me for telling those...
Anyone have any embarassing Penderwick stories?? ;)

I am really impressed with your ideas for making a movie and getting the book read in class. That is awesome. My brother did that once with Romeo and Juliet (you can guess what a male Juliet looked like!). I think you'd have tons of fun doing a movie.Anyway, I am going to pull out of your group since I just got the list of all the books I need to read this fall and need to get busy. Good luck. You've got a nice group going.
Maya? Why the heck would you want to come to our house? You know, maybe Gunjari would be more willing to let you in if you ust asked...:)
hehe maya i'm not mad about posting the embarassing stuff. it's actually quite hilarious in print... :)
phew. I'm glad you won't spear me upon arrival to your house...
Thanks for joining the group, Gloria :)

Gloria,I totally agree with you about the unobstructed time that the Penderwicks have. I think that this aspect of the story is one of the top reasons I love these books. I was talking to a camp director this summer and she asked, "Isn't it OK to give kids time with nothing scheduled?" I replied with, "Of course! If they get REALLY bored they will figure out something to do." Then we started talking about all of the things my friends and I would come up with when we were kids. I do think that it is really important to help kids figure out how to spend their time when that is all they have. I'm pretty sure they don't have enough of it and that's really a shame (I won't get into the problems this causes with developing their imaginations etc...) Back to your question: I do think that kids get inspired by these books because Jeanne has shown readers how easy it is to have a great time/adventure with simple resources.
i remember what i used to do in my unstructured time... i would build complex sculptures out of jenga blocks. i swear, i built more with the jenga blocks than i actually played jenga with them...
ok u don't remember but trust me, we did. and we always found the buried treasure in them, which was always a box of tictacs.

i for one like jane the best. which character do you think you are like the most? i find that i'm nothing like any of the characters really, except that my older sister is like rosalind.
