I am not a parent so can't speak from practical experience, but when Christ got a hold of me a while back, I found that I needed to re-learn how to do relationships and re-examine my own character development. Parenting books were a great source for extra explanation of biblical principles. My favorites:
Home Improvement: 8 Tools For Effective Parenting
Never Mind the Joneses: Building Core Christian Values in a Way That Fits Your Family
Making Children Mind without Losing Yours
Not specifically parent/child focused:
Let Me Be a Woman
The Mark of a Man
For Women Only: What You Need to Know about the Inner Lives of Men
For Men Only: A Straightforward Guide to the Inner Lives of Women
And the ever-popular:
Love and Respect
The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate
All of the above helped me think through the basics...examining my assumptions against the biblical model.
Schenk's book on children in the covenant is a good place to start. Understanding my children's place in the Church and my covenant responsibilities did great things for my parenting - much more than any how-to book I've read.
I have heard great things about Shepherding a Child's Heart and Instructing a Child's Heart by Tedd Tripp though I haven't had a chance to read them yet. I know Todd Friel had him on Wretched and talked a bit about his books so I would say that would be a good endorsement for the soundness of the books.
I have read a few different parenting books, but Shepherding your Child's Heart is definitely my number 1 parenting book to recommend and as a help as we raise our kids. It's solidly biblical and theological (Tedd Tripp has a reformed theological base), it's practical and helpful, it's very balanced -- but most of all it's biblical wisdom for the task of parenting.I also recommend Grace Based Parenting by Tim Kimmell, as a helpful reminder of the place of grace in parenting -- we easily slip into "law" with our kids!!
For Dad's, 'Fatherhood -- what it is and what it's for' by Tony Payne (an Anglican from Sydney Australia) is great for Dads, and 'Pastor Dad' by Mark Driscoll (a short, free ebook you can download at theresurgence.com) is challenging and encouraging.

Yes to Shepherding a Child's Heart and also Standing on the Promises by Doug Wilson, although not he's not everyone's cup of tea
