Diane U (djuseless) My hubby and I are thinking of going back to Lancaster County PA again in May. We want to do something new while we are there. We have done most of the "touristy" things except for going to the plays at PA Dutch Theatre or American Music Theater.

We typically like to do something everyday while we are on vacation even if it does not take the whole day. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I always enjoyed going to the flower & craft warehouse in Blue Ball. Just down the road, in New Holland, was Yoder's Buffet (I'm not sure if it's still there, it's been 13 years since we lived there.) I imagine you're been to Shady Maple in East Earl -- you could spend all day there between the IGA, the gift shop, the furniture store & Good's Store (check out the back room for books).

In September my friends & I took a trip up and were moved to the Bird-In-Hand Village Inn when where we originally booked our room, a sister location, was having mechanical problems. Anyway -- they offer a complimentary 2-hour bus tour that was very nice.

Sarah (misscalico) | 128 comments A friend of mine lives amidst a Plain community in Lancaster, PA. We visited them this summer, and he took us on a "off-the-beaten-path" tour of the neighboring communities! I would suggest that you try to locate some of the less well-known shops (we visited one where they sold painted gourds!) and take the time to just drive through some beautiful countryside. I felt very awkward when we were being "touristy"... I dress "Modern Plain", and I know how awkward it feels to be constantly stared at.

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments Sarah I would love to hear what dressing "Modern Plain" is, exactly. :) If you're willing to share!

Sarah (misscalico) | 128 comments I think a good description (with pictures) of "Modern Plain" is found on http://www.quakerjane.com/spirit.frie.... This summer, I made the decision to no longer wear pants. I now only wear modestly styled plain skirts and dresses. I have worn a head covering (or, prayer veiling) for over two years. Both these decisions were made against the advice of my church and my family, but I feel that God has richly blessed me in this change. He has helped me to turn the persecution and opposition into spiritual growth! He works in mysterious ways, for sure.

Sorry, but I could write a book on the topic once I get going! Hope that helps! :) I'd like to hear your thoughts on this... I've actually started a new thread called "Plain Dress" if you're interested.

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments I think that is awesome Sarah! I am definitely highly interested in your decision and think that God is blessing you for a reason. It takes a strong person to stick to such a decision so we are here to support you.

Sarah (misscalico) | 128 comments Thank you so much, Camille! It means a lot. I think one reason that I was first drawn to the Amish was because of the covers! The women were dressed simply and modestly, and although at the time I had no idea what a kapp even was, the little white bonnets intrigued me too! :)

This group has been a blessing in so many ways! It's not every day you get the chance to talk with a group of women who appreciate simplicity and modesty! Thank you Camille and everyone else for making this group what it is.

No, I chose to dress Modern Plain based on my own convictions and not because of the church I belong to. In fact, I am one of only a few who attend that choose to dress this way. Thank you for your kind words... God's plan is always best!
