Lahni | 660 comments I happen to be in the middle of Through Black Spruce by Joseph Boyden right now.

Is that all we need to do to claim the points? Or did it need to have a black cover too?

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
I was confused, too. Does it need to have both, or just one or the other? Yesterday I started

The Shack by William P. Young The Shack by William P. Young, which has a mostly black cover.

I'm reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson. The photo posted on Goodreads and on Amazon is of the dust jacket, not the actual cover of the book. The librarians in our group will appreciate that it's not reasonable for me to pull the dust jacket off the library book to take a photo of the real cover. But the actual cover of the hardback is entirely black, except for silverish blue lettering on the spine.

the dust jacket:
Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green

message 5: by Tara (new)

Tara | 742 comments I was wondering the same. Does the book have to satisfy both requirements.
I happen to be reading Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin , but it only fits #1.

Lahni & Lyn, I guess it is now self-explanatory, sorry!

Susan, I'm a GR librarian, if you could give me the ISBN of the book you're reading, I can try to load your edition on GR :)

Tara & Natasha: those covers are fine

Thanks, Karen, but I think it's there. The ISBN is 9780525421580, and that's the book listed at 6567017. So I think they're choosing to picture the colorful dust jacket rather than the real cover. I can see how that makes sense.

I think maybe book companies are choosing to use dull real covers for hardbacks and put the color into the dust jackets--probably much cheaper that way. If it seems fair to rule this book out, and change the requirement to dust jacket for hardback books, I'll understand. I can pick something new. I'm sure I can find something before the time is up. I just thought I'd check since I'm actually already reading this one.

message 13: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9056 comments Mod
Sorry, Susan, but I would think that the dust jacket is the actual 'cover' of hardbacks as most hardbacks themselves are usually quite plain with the dust jacket being the main 'cover'ing of the book. I guess, I didn't really understand your question in the first place. Sorry to make a muddle of things...

That's ok. It makes sense. I just have so many older hardcovers without dust-jackets that I've never thought of it that way.

I'll start In Another Country/Vintage Season by Robert Silverberg before the 22nd.

LynnB | 1783 comments What do we do if our book fits the description, but the cover isn't shown in the book listings? I am reading Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison , but mine is the 30th Anniversary Edition, which is about 2/3 a silhouette in black and the other 1/3 is shades of brown. Can you go on our word? And is 2/3 black enough to count?

message 17: by Christina's Book (new)

Christina's Book Chronicles (christinasbookchronicles) | 251 comments create a new version of the book and I or another librarian can link it to the other editions for the same book for you if you include a link to it here.

I don't know what that one looks like. I saw this version though:

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison

yep, 2/3 is majority ;)

and thanks, Christina

That's not the same one, but about the same color proportion. I don't know how to "create a new version", but I'll see if I can do it.

If you go to the book's main page. In the upper right hand area you will see the link to other editions. Click on "more editions." Check first that your edition is not there, but if not, there should be a link on the right that says "add a new edition" and if you have any questions just let me know. :)

When I put in the ISBN, it comes up with a different cover - I put in ISBN 0394717155, but the picture that shows is for ISBN 0394717159. The one I'm looking for was published by Vintage Books in 1972 and is the 30th Anniversary Edition. ???

message 22: by Christina's Book (new)

Christina's Book Chronicles (christinasbookchronicles) | 251 comments Ok. You might have to add it then if its not listed. I didn't see it either but I don't know what cover I'm looking for.

LynnB | 1783 comments Christina wrote: "Ok. You might have to add it then if its not listed. I didn't see it either but I don't know what cover I'm looking for."

The problem is that the ISBN is connected to the wrong cover (different last digit) -- one book is shown with two covers connected to it. But if it's acceptable to use a different cover that approximates it, I'll do that. Would that be okay?

message 24: by Christina's Book (new)

Christina's Book Chronicles (christinasbookchronicles) | 251 comments I'd say so. Karen can confirm since this challenge is her baby...but since there is a cover that meets the requirements listed I think you're good. Wish we could get yours added. :)

message 25: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9056 comments Mod
Lynn, you are the one who can see the cover of the book and so, if you say it's 2/3 black then I'll take you word on it :)

message 26: by LynnB (new)

LynnB | 1783 comments @Christina and Karen - Thanks!

I'm claiming this one for the bonus...
The closest cover is Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison , though on mine his face is turned the other way, and only half of the face is unshaded. Also, author and title are both at the top of the book cover. This is a paperback version, with 568 pages.

Luann (azbookgal) | 1021 comments Great! I've got Dark Life by Kat Falls just sitting here in a stack waiting for me. Not only does it have "dark" in the title, but the cover is pretty dark as well - although probably not enough to count if it didn't have dark in the title:

Dark Life (Dark Life, #1) by Kat Falls
