Bel Canto is an easy read. But I'm trying to get into the surreality of it all. The writing is good, the characterization of the minor details of all the hostages is very intricate, but it's hard for me to suspend belief for long periods at a time.

I recently read (and by read, I mean, 'read and then skimmed the last 100 pages of') a short book called Blood Kin by Ceridwen Dovey. It's like Bel Canto except without the little plot Bel Canto actually has. It's more like a character study for a novel, not a finished book. But if you like learning all these seemingly insignificant details about seemingly insignificant people thrust into political turmoil beyond their control, it might be fun to explore.
