Jerry | 850 comments Should all hunting be banned, or just the hunting of certain animals at certain times?

I think all hunting should be banned. We don't use the meat or skin, we just take the heads and hang them on our walls as trophies. We don't need the prey, but other predators do.

message 2: by Nate (new)

Nate I think just certain animals (ie endangered) & restricting it to certain time of year & areas will help maintain control.

message 3: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments Nate: but that doesn't work. people hunt out of season.
Lindsay: i agree. but why shouldn't it be banned? it's a cruel sport if it involves murder. several species are gone forever because of hunting

depends. if they use all the animal- the meat, the skin, the fur- and make use of it it would be ok. i have more of a problem with the 'kill the animal to hang its head on the wall'
some hunt for fun. as long as they hunt animals that arent endangered, and utalize it all, i dont see a problem

the only problem is that its harder to enforce that.

message 5: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments however, very very very few people use the entire carcass. but the problem is, the animals will BECOME endangered. we can prevent that by stopping pointless killing

i know. i am just saying what would be the ideal situation.
i do not know if it should be banned completely or not. restrictions should defiantly be put up. the problem is they are, but they dont really help as much as we would want them to

message 7: by Nate (new)

Nate Where I live we are overly populated with deer, this becomes a problem because they are responsible for many car accidents. A lot of humans are being killed because of the deer. There are also the problems that they cause for farmers as well.

So every Nov is deer hunting season, to help control the population. Humans are only allowed to tag 2 deer. (Thats not to say that some dont cheat and kill more).

One guy in town that likes to hunt, he takes the deer that he kills and donates the meat to those in need, it helps feed them thru the winter.

So there are valid reasons to hunt its not always just for the sport of it.

message 8: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments well, that is a good reason. and so is the guy who actually uses the meat. but most people don't. any ideas how the number of animals killed can be controlled?

message 9: by Nate (new)

Nate @Donetello

There are always going to be those who go against the law, but thats not a reason to have such a law.

Most people will abide by the law or the rules of hunting.

message 10: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments but some people just go out with a gun and kill undetected.
what really gets me is that we humans are so egotistical that we take upon ourselves the responsibility of controlling other species. if anything, WE need to be controlled!

message 11: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) Umm, not for fun - that's wrong. But if the products are needed, then yeah, go ahead. After all, animals are for are benefit.

message 12: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments i disagree. people who say animals exist for our benefit are egotistical to the extreme. animals exist because they the right to exist, same as we do. i don't think it's right of us to assume that their only purpose on earth is for our benefit. animals are not just THINGS; they are individuals, people in their own right. just because humans are the top predator doesn't mean everything exists for us to manipulate and pull apart and consume and destroy as we wish.

message 13: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) That's not the only reason they exist... but God made them for us to use and derive benefit from.

message 14: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments how do you know?

message 15: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) It is said in our Holy Book... duh

message 16: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments well, not in mine...i don't think. even if it were, i don't believe it.

message 17: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) You don't beleive it; that's your opinion. I'm sure it's in your book..

message 18: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
not exactly. jews are only allowed to eat certain meats, and it says that the first man in paradise was a vegetarian, so im not sure if it would be right to say that the animals are here to serve humans

message 19: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) Not all animals ofcourse, we aren't allowed pig meat either. Nor are we allowed meat that has blood still in it, or the meat that's been sacrificed in another god/person's name. We aren't allowed wild animals either. So yeah, not all animals are to serve us, but we are superior to them and God tells us to take the benefits from plants and animals and all the other existing things.

message 20: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
in judaism, it is more the case that we were given certain animals we are allowed to eat, and all the others we cant. we dont eat pig's meat because it is not one of the animals we are allowed to eat, not because there is something against pigs

message 21: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) yeah same here. wow, we have a lot in common. I don't know much about judaism, but I can see that we have many similarities.

message 22: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
they are both monotheistic religions. they are bound to have many similarities

message 23: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) No, it's not because of that. Islam and Judaism follow the same Book; your Book was ours too before.

i actually believe that animals and plants are superior to us. they have the brains not to try and kill each other and destroy their environment.

they might not destroy the environment but they do kill each other.

message 26: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) Adn that fact only makes us superior, because animals are just docile, getting on with life.

message 27: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments fariha: not nearly as much as humans do.
amina: maybe the animals have the right idea. they live in peace, while we are at war with each other.

message 28: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) Yeah, because we have the intelligence to even think up the word "war"

message 29: by Siareen, Moderator (last edited Jan 28, 2011 02:21AM) (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
look, humans have more intelligence then animals. fact. animals live of instinct only.
animals may not know what war is, but they havent thought of medicine either. nor do they really have the concept of love or feelings to the same level that humans do [yes, i know that elephants morn the dead. they might have some feeling, but only on a very basic level]
humans have more intelligence. the good comes with the bad. animals dont have that concept either. they just do what they need to survive.

message 30: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) exactly

message 31: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) And they only live in peace in the sense that they don't have wars the way we do. They kill each other, and not only for food. Intruders on their "porporty" are killed. Sometimes they kill for fun.

message 32: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments give me one example of when animals kill for fun.
and i believe a simpler life is better than a more complicated life. animals do not wage war, they do not die en masse except when humans hunt them or destroy their environment.

message 33: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
animals dont kill for fun because they have no concept of fun!!!!!!!!!
if you want, you can go and live in a cave and survive of nature alone and not worry about anything and let your instincts alone guide you. but i think i would rather stay human and act like a human and think and be intelligent then have an animal- simple life

message 34: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments yes, they do have fun. animals play a lot more than humans do.
so you believe in making war and hating over having peace? animals do not hate. they only have aggression. in humans, hate has developed from aggression.

message 35: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) Because we are able to think up new concepts... jheez, do you really wanna be an animal?

message 36: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
animals play mostly to develop natural skills and instincts. and animals dont have peace either! you are only looking at the bad things animals dont have, but are forgetting that they dont have good things either

message 37: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments amina: we humans tend to forget that we ARE animals. and no, i do not want to be what you term an "animal." but i think behaving a little more like them would be better.
siareen: animals do have peace --more than humans do. and what good things don't they have?

message 38: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) Well, why don't you go roam the meadow and eat grass allday tomorrow if it makes you happy. Because no-one going to change their way now

message 39: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
no they dont. they just dont have war. but they have fights for territory and rights to mate and such. peace isnt a concept for them. peace involves thought and thinking.

message 40: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments amina: you should know that humans can't survive on grass. and i am stating my opinion and debating it. that's what this group is for, correct>
siareen: animals do not slaughter each other a hundred at a time. there's a huge difference between WWII and a squabble over territory.

message 41: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
but animals also dont know how to live peacefully together!!!! they do not no how to destroy, but they also dont know how to create. the dont have war, but they dont really have peace either.
in short, they live of instincts. no good, no bad. just live.

message 42: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments that's better than living in a world of evil.

message 43: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
fine. whatever you want to think. i disagree.

message 44: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) And me too. We have been given intelligence to use, not put aside and act like animals, docile and submissive with no sense of right or wrong, or good or bad, or fun or evil. You have a brain right? Use it.

message 45: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) give me one example of when animals kill for fun.

Have you ever had a cat? I've had plenty, and trust me, they don't always kill to get food. I have lost count of how many times my cats killed birds or mice and just left the dead body, sometimes dragging it into the house, sometimes just leaving it. It would seem that they enjoy the chase.

message 46: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) True, I've heard cats having done that

message 47: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments but that is for food. humans don't eat each other, do they?
and animals do have emotions, and fun. they are not docile and submissive. they do have concepts of right and wrong. animals have brains as well.

message 48: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) but that is for food. humans don't eat each other, do they?

Did you not read my post? As I said, and I repeat, "They (cats) don't always kill for food". They are often seen playing with mice or birds, and then just leaving them, not even always killing them. And even when they do kill them, cats like to play with their food. And what is the "humans don't eat each other" suppposed to prove?

message 49: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) Exactly, atr least we don't eat each other.

message 50: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) Wait... Do animals eat each other? I mean, I cat would eat a mouse, but a cat wouldn't eat a cat.
