Jacob's Mom
I think Meyer was just telling her readers what happened to Jacob's mom because it was never mentioned before and she is trying to tie up all the loose ends in this book.
I think there could be more of a storie here! Sure SM is tying up ends but why on earth would someone have to have a coffin NAILED shut! Was there some supernatural thing going here? Was there a posibility of a problem some how?
If the corps was just a corps why nail it shut?
Just asking.
I honestly thought the same thing too when I read the book. I actually re-read the page a few time to make sense of it. I've read the book twice now and it does seem a bit out of place. Not much...but a tad. I think she is setting herself up for more books...
steph mentions that or well jacobs thinking that because clearly, bella coffin would be shut just like his moms, he was using it to compare.. makes sense, he saying theyre both similar, to horrible to see
maybe his dad or something didn't want people to see the corpse. Maybe it was a little bit mangled or something?
But again WHY NAIL IT SHUT? I understand a closed coffin viewing. There are occations where it is nessary or just plain wanted, and we do now a days lock the coffin before it is entured but that is to keep robbers from getting in. The only reason I can see for NAILING it shut is to try to keep something in........... or perhaps to make it more difficult for someone who is looking for somethig to get to it.
Some hidden secret?
Is his mother even really in there? How old was he when his mother died and did he see her body in the coffin for himself before it was shut?
I think he said it because what if Charlie wanted Bella's coffin nailed shut? Then how would she get out? And I know why someone would want a coffin nailed shut, people dig up bodies all the time for research or looking for valuables. Having it nailed shut would just prevent that. And also the people looking for valuables and stuff don't always put the bodies back nicely, like actually being put in the coffin would be nice treatment.
Jacob was being dramatic I think...her body was so horrifically mangled there was no way to compose her enough for a service without it being shocking and sickening. Mostly they're saying no one can see this, they would know instantly something worse went on than the story they gave. Plus, Billy was in the accident I thought...isn't that how he was crippled? So he was witness to her death then.
Ryan, you are right, that is kind of far fetched. In my opinion, you are making something big out of nothing. I agree with Cassidy.
Totally agree Morgan, but I like Edward wayyy better than Jacob. I mean Jake's nice and all but he doesn't compare to Edward in my eyes.
its ok i toally love edward before but then in the last book i felt bad for jacob and i got mad at edward but now i love jacob
For some odd reason I think if Jacob dressed up in All green and dyed his hair green, his size would make him the jolly green giant...which I think is werid...
Its because she wouldn't be n the coffin so they would have to make up an excuse like his moms death because the coffin was closed.
I am sorry to do this but i have to its just who i am, but to all the people who yelled at me telling me that a vampire and a human female cant have children (see disscussion, Strange Idea: Need Help), IN YOUR FACES I TOLD YOU IT WAS POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And for those who belived in me thank you. Now you can get back to your discussion.

go to that website... is this how you pictured Jacob in the books? for me I pictured him a lot different than who they picked to play him.

i'm not saying he isn't good looking... because he really is. he's just not how i pictured him in the book
See I loved Edward in the book. He was just so yummy it made you want to be a vampire with him. but then with the movie if you compare him and jacob... i would change my mind about who to be with lol
If the corpse was in a car accident and was all mangled and you didn't want your children remembering their mother like that, all broken and dead looking, then yes you would close it...
I think this is a very enlightening conversation, and many unique views have been brought up but i must say, I don't feel like theres anything important to that statement.i've been wrong before ;)... but having his mom just dissapear and be what, a vamp? that's just too much. No i think Jake's mom is dead...
Hmm. Good point. But there are a lot of possiblities to what happened. I believe that Stephenie will explain in the twilight saga official guide. We'll just have to wait and see. Or we could ask her...
Man, Tallor Lauther grew up! i remember Cheaper byt he Dozen! I liked him with Alyson Stoner at the time. How old is he by now?

I know earlier in the book Jacob's mom got hit by a car. But in the quote above, his mom has nothing to do with what he's thinking. So how is she tied in to that sentence? I know it's a long shot, but to me it sounds like he's comparing Bella's 'death' to his mom's!
FAR-FETCHED! don't ya think?
