There was a lot of interest expressed about this documentary in the "GWTW and Race" thread. You can now order a copy of "Change in the Wind" from the online store for Andrew Young Presents:

http://shop.andrewyoungfoundation.org...

This documentary looks fascinating, so get yourselves a copy.

For those who are unfamiliar with this documentary, follow this link to a description of and a trailer for the film. Enjoy!

Classicgirl818 | 17 comments OMG isn't that Cammie King talking in the trailer? I might be wrong but it sure sounds like her.

Yes, that's her! Sadly, she died before she could see the finished draft of the film. It looks excellent, though.

Also, I found this interesting article about the documentary and Mitchell's correspondence with Hattie McDaniel--a relationship unknown until this documentary came out back in August.

It's a good time to be a GWTW fan. ;-)

Classicgirl818 | 17 comments I know it was a sad time when she died. I've made a Cammie King tribute video the day she died here is the link.

It is a great time to be a GWTW fan:) How long have you been a fan? I've been one for about three years now. Do you have a place where I could watch the whole documentary?

I don't know if there is a place to watch the documentary online. I do know that you can order it online for about $20. Also, Andrew Young Presents is trying to find a date to broadcast it on PBS, so you can check his website to see when that will be. I didn't see any information yet, so I guess they are still trying to find a date.

I love the Cammie King tribute! The song is perfect, and the pictures are great.

I've been a GWTW fan for several years. I first read it in high school during a really rough period for me, and reading about Scarlett's strength really moved and helped me. I've re-read it twice since then, the last time being over the holidays. How about you? How many times have you read GWTW?

message 6: by Classicgirl818 (new)

Classicgirl818 | 17 comments Well I've only read it once. However I've seen the movie over 1000 times. When I first got the DVD I watched it every night to get me to sleep. It's funny because when I first saw GWTW I saw it backwards. I rented it and it didn't say side a or b. So I just put in a DVD. I was like why is she poor? Why is he leaving? WHATS GOING ON! When I got done with it. I was like mom I'm done and she was like your done? I was like yep. But I'm lost. Told her what happened and she told me to flip the disc over. I did and it skipped half way through. So I took it back and watched it right the 2nd time. Been obsessed ever since.

Do you collect anything GWTW? Who is your favorite person in the book and or movie?

That is a hilarious story about your first viewing of GWTW! What an introduction! I also have that crappy dual-sided disc. I'm investing in the blu ray as soon as possible. I guess the fact that you kept watching it AND became a fan reflects how well done it is. :)

I don't really collect memorabilia, but I do have several books about GWTW, Margaret Mitchell, and Vivien Leigh--one of which is a silly quiz/trivia companion.

My favorite character is definitely Scarlett. I love her strength and will power. I also love that she breaks every rule in her society's oppressive social code to achieve what she wants. The fact that she still ends up alone (well, as far as we can tell from the end...:) ) and distraught shows how oppressive that society was: Scarlett is comfortable neither as the decorative belle nor the scandalous rebel. I love that she perseveres, though, in spite of the ill effects such behavior leads to.

Do you collect memorabilia? If so, what kinds of items do you have? I remember when Mattel made the GWTW Barbies a while back. I wanted some, but, alas, my mother would not concur. (I was only about 10.) I know that Amazon has some collectible 1936 editions of GWTW, which I am planning to invest in. Do you have any collectible editions of the novel?

On another note, I really can't stand football, so tonight I'm going to enjoy a nice screening of GWTW. I'm still participating in an American tradition, right? :)

Classicgirl818 | 17 comments Lol I can't stand Football either. Sounds like a good plan to me.

I do have a few things GWTW: I went to the GWTW event back in Nov. called Gateway to the Wind. I got some things there. I have a music box (or trinket box I guess you could call it) that has the dressing scene on it that plays Tara. A pink T-shirt that has Rhett and Scarlett on it (the scene when he leaves her on the road to Tara) a mug (also with the dressing scene)a purse, the trivia book, a vivien leigh book, Gone With the Wind: The Definitive Illustrated History of the Book, the Movie and the Legend by Herb Bridges, Filming of Gone with the Wind also by Herb Bridges (this one is signed by him) and two or three others, two copies of GWTW (one is paperback and the other his hardback.) A calendar for this year and I also have last years, a movie poster for my dorm room. A small picture of Scarlett and Rhett (when he comes to her at Aunt Pitty's) it says: You should be kissed and often and by someone who knows how, two little figurines from Avon (a couple at my church saw them at a yard sale and thought of me) I have seven Hallmark ornaments along with some homemade ones from the GWTW event, plus one from 1989 I believe it is. Five GWTW CDs. A picture by Joseph Yakovetic. It's signed as well. Here is the link to the website: http://www.yakovetic.com/www.yakoveti...

I have the Scarlett one. Look in her hair and tell me what you see:) I also have Bonnie Blue Butler a gone with the wind memoir (It's autographed by Cammie King in blue sharpie) the 70th Anniversary of the movie in the big Red velvet box. I think thats all lol. Sorry it's a long list.

Sadly I don't have the dolls. I've been looking and looking for a while. I would like to get the Timeless Treasures set. Talk about a lot of money. Which Vivien Leigh book do you have? Have you heard about the new GWTW book they are coming out with? Along with a new Vivien Leigh book.

Whoa! That is an impressive collection! I don't have anything remotely close to that. I am, however, going to the Margaret Mitchell house in March, so I'm definitely going to check out their gift shop. :) Have you ever had a chance to visit it?

I have two books about Vivien Leigh: Vivien Leigh: A Biography, which is okay, but worrisome due to the lack of a bibliography; and Vivien: The Life of Vivien Leigh, which I just bought but have not had a chance to read. I have pre-ordered the forthcoming biography, Damn You, Scarlett O'Hara: The Private Lives of Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier and am very excited to receive it. I prefer to think of it as my Valentine, since it comes out on the 16th. :)

As a matter of fact, the new book about GWTW, Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind: A Bestseller's Odyssey from Atlanta to Hollywood, is written by one of the members of this group, Ellen Brown. I just received my copy in the mail (I pre-ordered it), and it looks very interesting. It's basically a "biography" of the novel, if that makes sense. There are a few threads discussing it here in our group, and the book will be our February book-of-the-month.

I just have to say again how incredible your collection is. Most impressive!

No problem! I found out it was available while net-surfing during my lunch break. I was practically bouncing out of my chair with glee. ;0

Classicgirl818 | 17 comments Thanks It's been fun collecting all of it. I really want both of those books. I think Damn you Scarlett O'Hara the private lives of vivien leigh and laurence olivier is going to be my Valentine as well. My mom and dad said they would get it for me. Right now I'm reading: The Oliviers on my nook. OMG! That's such a great book. I was looking around on Barns and Nobles.com and typed that in and I was like. OMG they have it. I bought it within a snap of my fingers lol. It was a free book so that made it better:)
No I've never been. I would love to go. I'm going to try and go in June.

Classicgirl818 | 17 comments Oh and when does the new Vivien Leigh book come out? I was on Barns and Nobles.com and it said that it comes out on Feb 16th but it said buy now instead of pre-order. Have you gotten your book yet?

I ordered my copy at the same time I ordered the GWTW book since both of them come out on the same day, February 16th. My copy of Damn You, Scarlett O'Hara hasn't come in yet, but I guess it will soon.

I think the reason B&N.com has it listed as "buy now" is because they're starting to mail them out now. I ordered my from Amazon, so I have no idea. I'm sure, though, that if you order it now you will get a bargain price and it will be mailed to you as soon as it is available. Happy shopping!

Classicgirl818 | 17 comments Okay will check into that. Did you get to look at that website that I put in an earlier message?

I checked it out and found the paintings really impressive. You own the one of Scarlett in the barbecue dress, right? I looked at her hair, but did not see anything. I'm pretty bad at that, though; I always sucked at the Magic Eye: A New Way of Looking at the World books. LOL.

message 17: by Classicgirl818 (new)

Classicgirl818 | 17 comments lol. If you look in her hair you will see Rhett.

My copy of Damn You, Scarlett O'Hara: The Private Lives of Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier just came in. The paper is super cheap; I can see through the pages because they are so thin. Also, the back of the book has pages advertising "scandalous" biographies about dead stars. The back of the book actually states:

"Blood Moon: Applying the tabloid standards of today to the scandals of Hollywood's Golden Age. It's a tough job...but somebody's got to do it!"

The first page has a list of quotes supposedly from Vivien and Larry about "fucking"--yes, the quotes selected to introduce this biography and these two actors use that word.

I haven't read this book yet, but let's just say the authors' ethos is looking kinda weak. I'll probably read this, but this already seems unreliable. And I was excited about it. Boo!

Classicgirl818 | 17 comments lol. Oh, boy so now I'm wondering if I should even get it.

Classicgirl818 | 17 comments Okay so I order the new viv and larry book (I hope I didn't make a mistake. Now that I've order it I regret it.) However I also order the new Margret Mitchell book as well.

As a collector, the Viv and Larry book might be worth owning since you will have all of the books pertaining to Vivien Leigh or GWTW. I tried to read the beginning, though, and it was pretty obviously exaggerated. There are no footnotes, so you never know if the quotes are real or fabricated.

The Margaret Mitchell book is good, though, and thoroughly researched. I think you'll be satisfied with that one. :)

I just ordered my copy of "Change in the Wind," and will post a review once I get to watch it.

message 22: by Classicgirl818 (new)

Classicgirl818 | 17 comments I'm not to far in the Viv and Larry book. I just got to the part about Vivien. I will say I did like the quote on page 14. I'm trying to get past all the sexual talk and just skim over that (don't really care for things like that) I'm not going to believe anything this book says. However I saw a book by Roy Moseley in the front cover I would like to read (providing it's not a bad bio)

Haven't started the other one. I just got them yesterday:) One came regular mail and the other came UPS? I have no idea lol. College has been really hard these past few weeks. Will try to enjoy the books while on spring break.

Yeah, I'm with you on the sexual details. I mean, I don't mind learning about Vivien's mental illness or her affair with Peter Finch (or Larry's affairs, for that matter), but the details they provide are just excessive and crude. And disrespectful! Do we really need to know about their bedroom habits THAT intimately? Mentioning an affair and the consequences it brought is one thing; this book is, well, trashy.

I found a review of Brando Unzipped: A Revisionist and Very Private Look at America's Greatest Actor, which is by the same author. This review cracks me up; the reviewer gave it five stars for being the most inventive, creative, and entertaining biography he's ever read. Too funny!

I guess this author has made a career out of "revising" movie stars' biographies. At least most people realize they are exaggerated.

message 24: by Classicgirl818 (new)

Classicgirl818 | 17 comments I'm with you on vivien's mental illness and things, but the details are just a little to much.

I was wondering if you would help me on something. I have to re-write a fairy tale for my children's lit class, I'm doing Snow white. Well in my story it takes place in England during WWII. A lord and his lady live in notley abbey. The little girl's name is Vivien:) (I thought that would fit since it's in England.) Anyway I don't know what to do for the apple? Should I keep it the apple or something else? Thanks for the help:)
