Not right now - I got SUCKED INTO THE BLACK HOLE that is the Twilight series. I mean that in a good, distracting way though. Sometimes I like reading books that are so popular, just to see what the fuss is about and this is one I'm glad I did. From the list, it's ridiculous but here is what is sitting on my bookshelf, yet to be read:
Adventures of Augie March
Beloved
Gone with the Wind
Infite Jest
Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Spy Who Came in from the Cold
Never Let me Go
Eyes Were Watching God
Sportswriter
Ridiculous I know.. but it's safe to say if I tackle any of these next, it'll be off this list. I'm thinking maybe Eyes Were Watching God first though ...
Gail, you have to add Catch 22 to that list. An antiwar book about war. It's amazing.Gone With the Wind is one of those books I read 10 times when I was younger but it gives such a slanted view of the Civil War that I don't think I could stomach it again at this point in my life. But Rhett and Scarlet still have a pull...
I will definitely add Catch 22 on there! It's one of those books I stare at in a guilty fashion at the bookstore, knowing I should pick it up but then getting sucked in to another shelf of something ... well... lighter, I guess. I struggle with war books, but I have heard great things about Catch (and I think, somewhere, I do own it, so I'll look around)
And GWTW ... yes, most DEFINITELY a slanted view of the war - but there is that part of me that, like you, can't forget that Rhett/Scarlet kiss! Did you ever read the sequel (or was it a prequel)?
Nope...by the time it was written, the "slanted view" outweighed the "I love Rhett" so I just wasn't interested.
I'm working on The Big Sleep....if you have read any current mysteries, it's interesting to read this novel from the 30's. Funny how things change but never change.
I just finished Edgar Sawtelle. I feel like I need a stiff drink now. Ugh... Meg, have you ever read any Dashiell Hammett? You seem to like detective/mystery novels, and given that The Maltese Falcon is a bit of a classic, wondered (if you've read it) what you thought of it.
I picked up a collection of his works while Nick and I were in San Fran. Eating at John's Grille there (a locale from the book) was a highlight of the trip for me and sparked the Hammett interest. I hope to tackle some of his stuff this winter.
