Such a quiet group! Let's get some discussion going with an easy question - or maybe not so easy if you have a tough time choosing. :) What is your favorite Firefly episode?

Out of Gas is my favorite, hands-down. If you haven't watched all the other episodes, Out of Gas doesn't mean as much, but it's still an amazing episode. Other favorites are Serenity (both parts) and Jaynestown.

I never can choose just one favorite. :)

message 2: by Joanne (new)

Joanne G. Rihm | 17 comments I agree. I love Out Of Gas. Joss is a fantastic storyteller. In case y'all don't know, Nathan Fillion and Jewel Staite both have personal pages on myspace. They write terrific blogs too. And last but not least, Dr. Horrible's Musical Blog is back online for viewing.

message 3: by Samuel (new)

Samuel | 1 comments It's hard to pick a favorite, they are all good IMO. I think I enjoyed Ariel the most though.

Thanks for the information, Joanne! I watched Dr. Horrible's Musical Blog when it was online the first time. I loved the first section, thought the second was okay, and really almost hated the third section. I guess I should have known with Joss, but I was surprised (shocked!) at the ending. What did those of you who have seen it think? (Without spoilers, for those who haven't seen it yet. Although, why haven't you!?? Go watch it right now so you can discuss it with us! :)

message 5: by Joanne (new)

Joanne G. Rihm | 17 comments So much fun! well written, well acted. All parties involved really had alot of fun with Dr. Horrible. There could be more, so the rumors say. But the rumors will always want more. Nate's been working out! I had forgotten that Neil Patrick Harris did alot of Broadway and he sings beautifully. I don't think I can go on without spoiling anything! :)

Luann (azbookgal) | 216 comments Mod
Joanne, I'm going to start a separate thread for Dr. Horrible - clearly labeled with spoiler warnings so we can discuss it freely!

message 7: by Joanne (new)

Joanne G. Rihm | 17 comments okay. I'm okay with that. :) Luann, did you hear about Joss' project for the fall tv season? Eliza Dushku is slated to star. I can't wait!

message 8: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 216 comments Mod
I did! It sounds weird - and interesting. Which is how all of Joss's projects are when you just hear a summary of the plot. I didn't watch Firefly for a while after I heard about it because "a western in space" seemed too weird and couldn't be all that good, right? :) And at that time I was already a big Buffy and Angel fan, so I should have known better.

message 9: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 4 comments I really can't wait for Dollhouse to begin. I really enjoy Eliza Dushku and it's always a relief to have Joss back on TV. I'm just hoping that it doesn't suffer the same fate as every other show on Fox that I like and get canceled after 6 episodes.

I missed Buffy and Angel when they were big and didn't get into the Whedonverse until Firefly because I love the concept of a space western. There's an anime called Cowboy Bebop that first got me hooked on the idea.

Anyway, on topic, my favorite Firefly episode has to be "Objects in Space". Jubal Early was a great character, I wish he would have been around longer. I also really like "Trash" because of Saffron. She was another character I wish would have been around more.

message 10: by Olin (new)

Olin | 10 comments i have to say "objects" as well.
just as a side note, i saw only 1 epasode when it was on Fox, which was "trash" but when i got the full season the box said that "trash" never aired...????

message 11: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 216 comments Mod
Welcome to the group, Logan! I'd say that's a very valid worry. Some Fox episodes don't even get 6 episodes! Look what happened to Drive.

Olin, the Firefly Wiki says that Trash first aired on MundoFox, on June 28, 2003:

http://firefly.wikia.com/wiki/Trash

Could that have been the Fox channel you saw it on? I know that the entire series was also shown several times on the Sci-Fi Channel.

To recap, our picks for favorite episode so far are:

Two for Out of Gas
One for Ariel
Two for Objects in Space
One for Trash

Do you have a different favorite that hasn't been mentioned yet? Well, what are you waiting for? Mention it! :)

message 13: by Olin (new)

Olin | 10 comments Yeah, it was when Firefly was first aired on fox.

message 14: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (slayerfan1975) Out of Gas also gets my vote!

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Jaynestown...I love that one just because Jayne is my favorite character. The hat he wears is priceless!

message 16: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 216 comments Mod
Hi, Matthew! Welcome to the group. Jaynestown is one of my top favorites - right behind Out of Gas and Serenity. Two favorites scenes - when they are all gathered around Jayne's statue and Kaylee says its eyes keep following her. I also love the scene in the bar when we first hear "The man they call Jayne!" - seeing the expressions on all their faces as the song starts is just too fun.

message 17: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cindymendoza) Seems like this post is a little slow and its been a while since someone replied, but I wanted to add my favorite epsiodes too:

1. Out of Gas
2. Our Mrs. Reynolds
3. Ariel

and sorry, but Jaynestown was my least favorite episode. I just didn't like it as much as the rest...

Jayne is on his way to make you reconsider that comment. ;-)

message 19: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cindymendoza) Oh, don't get me wrong. Jayne is one of my favorite characters, its just that episode.
I'm not too sure what it is about it, but everytime I watch it...I dunno, it seems kind of pointless??
I can't explain what it is. Everytime I watch the series, I watch it too, it's not like I skip that one episode, but I just can't help to feel that I want it to be over with so I can move on to the next one.

message 20: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 216 comments Mod
I just wish we could have had an episode like Jaynestown for every one of the characters - to find out more about them and their backstories. There were just so many things hinted at that were never revealed.

message 21: by Olin (new)

Olin | 10 comments if they did a new season, i want a revisit to Jaynestown, and the people turn on Jayne.

message 22: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cindymendoza) I wanted a Shepherd Book epsiode, so that we could know more about him...

message 23: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I don't know if we would have gotten a Shepher Book episode, even if hte series went on for years! He was THE mystery man. :)
My favorite episode is, hands down, Out of Gas, followed by Our Mrs. Reynolds.

message 24: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 216 comments Mod
Welcome to the group, Kandice! It looks like we may at some point get to know about Shepherd Book's backstory. Read about it here:

message 25: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I saw your that in another thread after I had posted. I can't wait!
Oh, thank you :)

message 26: by Michael (new)

Michael (myke56) All the episodes are great but if I have to choose just one it would have to be The Message. Lots of action and it gets quite emotional in the last act. Honestly, there could have been tears.

message 27: by Kymela (last edited Dec 13, 2009 08:10AM) (new)

Kymela (kymelatejasi) I can't choose. I just can't. Maybe Shindig or Trash...But really I loved all of them almost equally. Kinda like season 5 of Angel. I liked just about every one of those episodes.

message 28: by Jeannie (new)

Jeannie (serenity77) | 70 comments I loved all the episodes.... I don't think I can choose either... I think the last three episodes would have to be my favourite but don't ask me to choose cause I won't be able to...

message 29: by Jeannie (new)

Jeannie (serenity77) | 70 comments Hmm i have just started watching the pilot episode again.. I love it so much!

Anastasia (tdallonsy) | 123 comments Michael wrote: "All the episodes are great but if I have to choose just one it would have to be The Message. Lots of action and it gets quite emotional in the last act. Honestly, there could have been tears."

There were, 'The Message' was the episode they shot at the time they found out they were canceled, or it was the last one they shot once they knew they were canceled. Either way, some of those scenes were extremely hard to shoot due to emotional toll on the cast and crew once they found out they were canceled.... If I remember the commentary right.

message 31: by Darbus (new)

Darbus | 42 comments My recollection is that the funeral scene was the last scene ever shot, so it was not only a goodbye to Tracey, but also to the show as a whole. I agree that it was an amazing scene.

message 32: by Beth (new)

Beth | 16 comments My top two are Out of Gas and Shindig. Out of Gas is my favorite because it makes me cry that everybody came back even though Mal didn't call them back, and I always cry when he said, "Y'all gonna be here when I wake up?" A rare moment of vulnerability from the cap'n. I love Shindig because of Kaylee's scene at the buffet with the guys all around her, listening raptly while she talks about engines, and because of the Mal/Inara interactions, from the dance scene to the fencing lessions.

message 33: by Jeannie (new)

Jeannie (serenity77) | 70 comments They are two of my favs as well!!! Now I really want to go and watch the series again!

message 34: by C.G. (new)

C.G. (samatwitch) | 29 comments I've been rewatching the series so I could find quotes to use in my online quote contest leading up to Can't Stop The Serenity Vancouver 2011. "Out of Gas" and "Objects in Space" are still my favourites but I love every episode even though I know most of the scenes and dialogue by heart. :)

If you want to see "Serenity" on a big screen, check out http://cantstoptheserenity.com for an event near you and if you live in Vancouver, BC or nearby, check out our blog for tickets and more information: http://serenityscreeningvan.blogspot.com. Over the past five years, CSTS events worldwide have raised over half a million dollars for Equality Now and some local charities. Come and support women & girls globally while having a fun shindig!

message 35: by Debra (new)

Debra (learob08) | 10 comments No one has mentioned Heart of Gold yet. I love that one. Kaylee talking about "boy whores" and the whole child discussion between Wash and Zoe. Shoot I want to meet that child. And Inara has to come to grips with her true feelings for the cap'n.
Shindig. Gave us my favorite qoute though. Kaylee calling Mal "cap'n tightpants" every time I hear her say that I fall out of my chair laughing.

message 36: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (porterak) I think I would have to say either "Our Mrs. Reynolds" or "Out of Gas".

message 37: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 3 comments Am I the only one who favors War Stories?
Out of Gas and Ariel are great, but watching Mal help Wash endure torture, shows a true example of how Mal works. He carries you when you can't crawl, even when you busy hating him.

message 38: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 216 comments Mod
I think you are the only one I've ever seen mention War Stories as a favorite, Jessie. But I do like your reasoning.

It was 1) Shindig
Followed by Our Mrs.Reynolds,Trash&Heart of Gold
With Train Job pullling up the rear

message 42: by Rick (new)

Rick Honestly, I don't think I have a favorite episode - they're all so shiney.

But if you're going to force me to choose - I guess I'd have to say The Message. I think I cry everytime I watch it, in part becuase of knowing that the cast filmed part of it after first learning that the show was being cancelled.

message 43: by brooke1994 (new)

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) Serenity and the Shindig :) Oh, and Jaynestown and The Train Job
