B&N Nook Color & Tablet Users discussion

It looks like Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) has been hacked to run on the NC.
Will anyone try it? I have yet to take a look at the how to. If it looks straightforward enough I might try it this week.

We're talking about rooted NCs here, right? I'm still afraid to do that. I jailbroke my ipad but my NC is too precious to risk so easily!

Yeah, I haven't had a chance to do much homework yet on getting a full android build to work on the NC. iPads and iPhones are lucky to have such a simplistic way to crack them.

I love the current UI for the NC but just imagine getting the features available in Honeycomb? Engadget added a video of the Android event introducing the new version.

Judy, I have "rooted" my nook based on these instructions, and it was fairly easy. It's practically impossible to brick it with this process.

I haven't taken on Honeycomb, though, as it requires you to actually overwrite the ROM memory. It's a little more tricky.

Rooted mine asap. Works great, makes it the best kindle yet. I just used the autonooter. Like Dean said, you'd have to try hard to brick it.

I have used the Nookie Froyo install on an sd card. It works well. You need to have at least a class 6 card. The good thing is when I shut id down and take the sd card it starts up back to normal. I am still worried about rooting it.

Well, I rooted it with Autonooter, and I LOVE it.

Cool I am still hoping the next update will give us a good experience.

@Judy - was it easy to root it? I'm still thinking about it. I was waiting for the update to come out, but who knows when that will be.

Jerry, using autonooter was pretty easy. I've also tried Froyo and Honeycomb off an SD card, which is a bit more complicated but perfectly safe since it doesn't write to your Nook's internal memory. You just take out the card and you're back to your normal Nook Color. I wouldn't recommend bothering with that though with the update so close (HOPEFULLY.)

Okay - I will try to wait patiently for the update. I just hope that the update allows us to put sideloaded books on the Library shelves on the homepage. It would make things a lot easier. One can only hope!!

I agree. It'd be great to have the books I get from the library to be right on the home screen. When I first started loading them in, I had to dig around to find them.

Kat, that was my biggest annoyance with nookcolor before the update....Howver, with the 1.2 update any sideloaded books can be added to your home screen! Its really easy.

Great! I have not updated yet, but that was one of the things I really wanted to be able to do.

I rooted with an n2a card. They create the cards, and all I had to do was insert and power up. It then lets you choose between the Android version or B&N version. It is the best of both worlds! I have all the free android apps I want on the Android side, and if I ever want to go back to my B&N nook, I simply reboot.

I got a N2A card for my wife's Nook Color and it works great. As said before, you just have to reboot to go between Nook and Android tablet. I got myself a different card offered on eBay for less money that I think works just as good:

It has 2 Android tablet programs. And, again, you just reboot to change between the Android tablet programs and Nook. Although I still haven't figured out why I need 2 separate Android tablet programs. The eBay has an option to make an offer. I offered about 5 bucks less than they were asking. Now they've dropped the price to what I paid but it can't hurt to make a lower offer. The company was good. I had a bad card and they expressed a new one to me and it works great.

One caveat, though, both my card and my wife's N2A card show about 115 MB available on the micro-SD card when we are in Nook. There is a lot more but I was told that the cards are made in LINUX (I think) and that is why Nook won't recognize the full amount of memory. If you are in the Android tablet programs it shows the full actual amount available, so if I want to store a lot of stuff I go into the tablet to do it.
