Michael | 43 comments To talk about the struggles and damages going on in Egypt. Do you think the riots should be changed by our federal gov't?

message 2: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) lol, I was just thinking about making a discussion for what is happening in Egypt.

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments A lot of shit is going on there. I hope that they don't share the idea with their neighbors...

message 4: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) I think it's horrible, but it's good at the same time. They need to do what they're doing, even if it is rather... violent.

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments I know right?
Yesterday our school officially banned us to even talk about it. Because it might be offensive to other people.

message 6: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) I think it's a good thing that they're standing up for themselves

message 7: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) I agree Amina. It might cause A lot of disorder in eastern countries, but I hope, and think, that it'll turn out alright in the end :) - it's like the french revolution :)

message 8: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) Yeah (lucky I'm moving) lol. No, actually, though I'm leaving, I hope this temporary choas brings out the best for us :D

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments You're leaving where?

Yeah I think it's pretty cool for them to do what they are doing, but they are too violent!

message 10: by Michael (new)

Michael | 43 comments I mean its good to stand up for themselves but what about that police car that ran through the streets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2asC38... ?

message 11: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) Moving to London

message 12: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) There's no order without chaos. And worse things than the psycho police car has happened there. They've had enough. And really, can you blame them?

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments I saw this picture of a guy holding a banner that said :

Mubarak, you leave, I go home. The End.

message 14: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) "Yesterday our school officially banned us to even talk about it. Because it might be offensive to other people. "

That's awful. What kind of school is this?

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments International. Apparently some people were 'teasing' some Egyptian kids.

message 16: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) That's horrible. Those kids should be suspended.

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments They're threatening to expell us if that happens again

apparently some Egyptian student wrote and article about how it started, and in the end, it was all a fluke that started because the Egyptian government shut down the internet- no facebook- and then shut down texts and stuff. in short, for the teenagers and college students that was the last straw. im not saying thats the only reason it started, but that was the 'trigger' i guess.

message 19: by Emma (new)

Emma (zeeberg) Yeah, but as you said, it was the last drop. It was hardly the reason. Vietnam had their facebook shut down for some time in December, and I don't see any uproars there.

No because I personally Mubarak needs to get his ass out of office if he really cares about his government! Its there right to protest but really this is like him saying that the people are up for dead!

message 21: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) He said he's leaving, right?

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments In seven months. I think.

message 23: by Michael (new)

Michael | 43 comments August! But they and I want him out NOW!

message 24: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) And me :D

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments Mubarak is gone?!

Fariha (damn you SketchUp!!) (fariha1234) | 1212 comments Congratulations to all the Egyptians

message 28: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) Yeh Congrats :D Come teach Paki's to do what you did. I am so proud of my fellow egyptian friends =D

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments And my neighbors :)

message 30: by Michael (new)

Michael | 43 comments YUS *celebrates by kicking stuff and jumping like a baboon!*

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments This boy in our school got expelled last week for talking politics. I don't know the details but he brought in a sheet about protest meetings about so
ething.

message 32: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) That's fucked up.

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments Mmhmm. But the school had already warned us not to. And it was something about 17th february which is apparently a big deal in this country.

message 34: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) But it doesn't matter is the school warned you or not. It's not the place of the school to censor your speech.

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments You can search about it if you want.
It's very dangerous. If someone found out about that the shool could have gotten in big trouble.

Fariha (damn you SketchUp!!) (fariha1234) | 1212 comments actuualy lauren when you go to a school.. there are certain rules and regulation you are bound to follow.

message 37: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) If you ever went to school, that is

message 39: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) If your school is a school run by a fair government, and the government protects the freedom of speech of its citizens, then you can discuss politics, even controversial ones, freely. Because as a government institution, it has no rights of censorship.

Now, if you're in a private religion school, or a dictatorship or theocracy, than it doesn't matter because it's not only having no rights in school, it's have no rights anywhere.

message 40: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
someone going to a private religious school could still have rights.
i go to one, and while some things ARE decided by the school [and i am sure there are rules in your school too] we still have rights and freedom of speech and student council and just about everything you have too.

message 41: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) Not as many, and not as often. And that kid wasn't just reprimanded, he was fucking expelled.

message 42: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
yes, i agree with you that that is extreme. very extreme.
and that would never happen in my school.
what i am saying is, you cant judge all religious schools by extremes.
fine, tell me something you think your school has that religious school dont.

message 43: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) I can submit a final paper about being an atheist (which I have actually done, freshman year) without any fear, of anything, of any sort of consequence at all.

message 44: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
if someone really wanted to submit a paper about atheism, the only thing that would happen to them is... nothing. some of the rabbis might try to talk to them or answer questions they had, but there would be no consequences other then that.
my school is very for being open and broadening our minds and stuff.
we are the jewish school that had a few lessons on the quran and the new testament. of course they try to keep us on the jewish path, but by explaining stuff and making question and answer forums. if we have a question we are free to ask it, and we can choose if we want to accept the answer or not.
and if someone really didnt want to follow a religious jewish lifestyle, they would probably want to move school anyway, because we have a bunch of lessons on the Torah and the jewish law, and it just wont interest them.
if they want to stay, they are welcome to.
there are plenty of religious schools in Israel that let non- religious jews learn there if they want to. they only ask that they follow the dress code and the dietary laws while in the school itself. out of it, they can do whatever they want.

Ruby~am I a part of the cure? (openupyoureyes) | 529 comments Yeah I know right? He was doing the IB thing :( he just go expelled.
Usually they encourage us to talk politics, but being in this sorta situation a this time, it wasn't a good idea.
The government in very strict, of the country. And if you wanna survive here you shouldn't be talking about the leader. That's why I don't say the name on the Internet.
So like these protests are against the leader I think, so if they started talking about this at school someone will find out and everyone will be in trouble.

And there would be no questions asked if someone at Catholic school was basically saying Catholics are stupid and ignorant? Or the same about any other religion?

message 47: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
i dont know. im not catholic.
but im trying to point out that it is possible to learn in a religious school and have as many rights as a non religious school.
i have as much respect for religious schools that force people to believe or act or think in a certain way as you do.

message 48: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) It's possible. But is it probable?

I'm sure there are religious schools that are just as good as public. But if I was in the Middle East in a fundamentalist school, and I wrote a pro-atheism paper, I'm sure it would not be okay.

message 49: by Siareen, Moderator (new)

Siareen | 533 comments Mod
obviously it is. i go to one. and i went to others.
look, i only got into this because you said

Now, if you're in a private religion school, or a dictatorship or theocracy, than it doesn't matter because it's not only having no rights in school, it's have no rights anywhere.

i get bugged sometimes when people generalize about stuff. like saying that automatically a private religious school doesnt give its students rights and is very close minded.
i know that that is the case for a lot of schools. i just wanted to show you that it isnt simply religious school= no rights...

Fariha (damn you SketchUp!!) (fariha1234) | 1212 comments i went to a private non-religious school.. though they did taught islam to us(duh) muslims but the students from other religions had a choice.
we had every kind of right even the freedom of speech but when a school restricts you to talk about something its better to keep your mouth shut rather than get expelled.. if you still want to discuss politics you could always form a private group!
