Tassie book stores avoid cutTASMANIA'S four Angus and Robertson stores will remain open despite parent company Red Group Retail entering voluntary administration last month.
The company's receivers, Ferrier Hodgson Partners, this week announced 38 stores in the chain, including one Borders store, would be closing.
However, Tasmania's four stores at Burnie, Devonport, Launceston and Hobart were not on the list.
Administrator Steve Sherman said the selected stores were the least viable of the group's 260 outlets and the closure was necessary to ensure the future of the business.
About 321 staff are being made redundant.
Kevin Young, the owner of Tasmania's only independently owned Angus and Robertson franchise at Burnie, said for him it was business as usual.
"We are a stand-alone business, so we are not in receivership and are largely unaffected," Mr Young said.
"Some national parts of the business, such as gift vouchers and national marketing, have been affected but we have our own supply chains, so our deliveries are not affected."
Mr Young said while adverse publicity was never good for business, he had been receiving plenty of positive support from his customers.
Tasmania's other three Angus and Robertson stores are corporate stores owned and operated by the company.
They are included in the voluntary administration but will continue to trade as normal.
Last month, Red Group chairman Steven Cain said import restrictions and GST-free online shopping were making it impossible for local retailers to compete with foreign internet sites such as Amazon.com.

Wow...that's new news to me actually. Hmmm..will read the newspaper tomorrow. I did a quick search on the mercury website and it turned up nothing.
http://www.theherald.com.au/ That's our local paper website...if you go down near the bottom of the home page, and click on POLL, you'll go to the list of polls...I think at the moment it is 2nd. I haven't managed to read the paper today, yet, so I'm not sure if it's in there or not, but usually the article is in the paper, so you can answer the poll after you've read about it..
Thanks. Interesting artical. Hmm...I don't really like Lara Giddings. But besides me not liking her really isn't the point.I can see it having good and a bad side..As do most things. Be interesting to see how it goes.
Yes, it will be interesting. I think it's in it's infancy at the the moment, so it'll probably take a long while to do anything, one way or the other. As per usual with the politicians!!!

Birchalls in Launceston is such an awesome bookshop. Stacks of $5-$10 books. No wonder the other big name book chain a few doors down is standing empty with a For Lease sign on it's window.
If Jeanette, from WA (presumably Western Australia)considers herself a trespasser to this site for Tasmanians, I am a trespasser in the extreme, since I am from Tennessee, USA. I wanted to know what Tasmanian locals think about
by one of my favorite authors Nevil Shute. For those of you locals who are not familiar with this author and this book in particular, it is a great story of Tasmania. If you are not already a Shutist and read The Rainbow and the Rose, I predict that you will have a difficult time not becoming a Shutist and searching out many of his other great works, particularly those of Australia. My favorites are:
,
, and
for Australia, and
,
,
for other locales. All are great reading.
I'm not from Tassy Gerald, but Nevil Shute is a brilliant author! Thanks for putting the links up to all those books for us:)
I'm a tassie person but I've never heard of that book or the author before..Thanks for the links to the books will give him a look over :)

I remember reading A Town Like Alice many many years ago, and loving it....since you've put all the links to his other books up, I've decided to re-read it, and read others. I can't remember if I read any others way back when, I guess I will find out when I read them!

I loved the one where the main character built minature engines etc and wrote articles for a hobby magazine. I always felt Neville S must have known such a person.
And hidden in the valleys....I'm a Tasmanian (ex mainlander)!
It seems like Tassie is just about devoid of Goodreads people. There's a local joke that asks "the last one out of Tassie, please turn off the lights. Rather than turn them off, lets turn them on again. My question is, should I read Girl on a Train next or Gone girl?
Joss from NE tasmania
The Girl on the Train would be my pick Joss:) But all of our Tassie members chat about their books in the What are you currently reading thread - we have quite a few of you guys:) You're very welcome to join us there:)
Mostly the state threads are used for announcements like writers festivals etc I think:)

Hi Tassie readers and authors! Are there any reading or story events much in Launceston or the North? Maybe we need some!
RitaSkeeter wrote: "There are occasional author events at the three main bookshops in town (book signings etc) but other than that - not much! I would be happy to find I'm mistaken though! The library has Rock and Rh..."
Yep, I knew about that, which is a great thing for developing literacy. It would be so nice if we could have a story telling event in a local cafe though. Someday when I find the time I might have to look into it!
I know Birchalls in Northern Tasmania sometimes have book readings/signing's if that helps? But I agree not enough literacy stuff out there in Tasmania.
For anyone that is in or around the Launceston area. My Bookshop (2nd hand bookshop) in Elizabeth Street Launceston is sadly closing down & has everything for sale at 50% off. According to their Facebook page they have 10,000 books all at half price.May have already been there myself & purchased a few :)
Hi Molly, I'm originally a 4th generation Cygnet resident too. Currently still in the Huon, small world! :D
Ha! I went to Cygnet primary for Kinder and then St James College. Did high school in town at St Mary's college. But my hubby was a Huonville high school boy! Love the valley! We travelled a d worked our way around the mainland for 8 years but had to come back home, most beautiful place in Aus for sure! I'm sure we must have crossed paths or no mutual friends that have!
Hi again, i was only at St James till grade 7 which was around 1988/89 (yep i'm an old fart lol)I also went to Hobart college for 11/12 after St Mary's, so hows that!!I drove my VW from Cygnet to Vic, then SA where i worked in the vineyards and then crossed the nullabor into WA where i worked in the mines. I then went on to Darwin and parts of QLD. Its a big country we live in! :)
