T (10040604) A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Diana Bishop is an excellent historian and an extremely reluctant witch. She would rather rely upon her logic and time-tested research methods than the magic that has begun to bubble out of her being. However, when Diana discovers (and unlocks) a long lost enchanted manuscript while researching at Oxford, she sets a chain of events into play that will force her to come to terms with her lineage. Along the way, other paranormal creatures begin to appear of the woodwork, including one very mysterious and handsome (of course) vampire. A Discovery of Witches is the first novel in a trilogy.

An enticing read with interesting historical references and great characters. The romance was fun to watch blossom as well--even for an old cynic like myself. Also, if you enjoy a glass of vino now and again, check out the author's award-winning wine blog--http://goodwineunder20.blogspot.com/
