okyrhoe | 141 comments An old song about a beautiful & bewitching woman from Misir (Egypt). You may recognize the tune from the soundtrack of Pulp Fiction (& more recently from a cover version by The Black Eyed Peas).

Thanks for sharing ! I recognize the melody but never thought about it !

This doesn't seem familiar, but now that I've heard the original Arab song if I come across the Greek version in the future I will try to recognize it.

At home I have CD's of "traditional" music from Egypt

& Sudan

I've also been listening to www.eka3.org that is promoting "new" music from the ME region.

What changed now and the song is no longer banned?
The style of that particular song reminds me of numerous Greek political/protest singers.

The song was done 2 months before revolution , but did not have path to get out by regime(so much anger in it)!!! after protesting began , it was tapped with actual scenes (which made it worse) and was leaked , but it had its way to TV after the fall of the regime 11-2-2011 , here is the lyrics' translation:

Hello everyone ! So happy to see there is a music thread ! Can't wait to discover new voices :) In the meantime, there is a beautiful young, energetic and powerful tunisian woman who just released her first profesionnal album this week. I saw her in concert in Montreal last November and I still have chills when I think about it. She mostly sings in arabic, but also in english, french and italian.
Here's a link to her main videos:

Bonne écoute !

Jessie K. (jessinuae) | 53 comments One of my hobbies is producing music, so I listen to a lot of it. But my field is mainly hiphop, so 85% of my playlist is Arabic Hiphop. For the "mainstream music" I love Ilham Madfai, Naseer Shamma, Lena Chamaiman, Reem Banna and Aziz Maraqa. I have a more extended list, but I think I could go on for days talking about Arabic Music :D

Would like to hear some of your recommendations!

I am very interested in Arabic hiphop & rap.
Great fan of Iraqi-Canadian The Narcicyst & Syrian-American Omar Offendum & Lebanese-American Big A.
Also Lebanon's Malikah, Rayess Bek, DJ Lethal Skillz, etc.
I thought for a while that maybe the Arab Spring would generate some interest beyond the borders for new music from the region.
(no offense intended with any statements, lyrics or images in linked videos)

Jessie K. (jessinuae) | 53 comments hey Okyrhoe. I had the chance to meet Narcy and Omar in december 2010, when they performed here in Amman and my fiancée was performing with them. Big A, which was a friend of mine and who recorded a track with my fiancée for his full album, has unfortunately stopped rapping and returned back to a more religious way of life.
Here's a link with songs related to revolt from Middle East and North Africa: http://revolutionaryarabraptheindex.b...

Small world!

Edited to add: I gathered as much about Big A's retirement from music, from his website. For some reason I also understood that he was going to be teaching, or something like that, and what could be cooler for kids than having a former rapper as a teacher ;-)

okyrhoe | 141 comments A propos of Birds Without Wings, here are some songs brought to Greece by the refugees from Anatolia and beyond.

Roza Eskenazi sings an amané (a lamentation, from aman - mercy in Turkish) : "I complain to God, of the injustice meted out, in one place remorse and compassion, and in another hardships"
and another amané, Dunya what have you done to me (dunya = earthly world, in Arabic)

Stella Haskil sings of a lost love, Bir Allah, the hodja calls from the cami (One God/imam/mosque)

Stelios Kazantzidis* sings in the Pontic dialect from the Black Sea region (Trabzon, Bursa, etc.)

Some "Greek" dances, with Ottoman/Anatolian origins:
- the soldier's zeibekiko scene from the film Evdokia -> Zeibeks
- hasapiko from the hasap (butchers in Turkish) of Istanbul
- Rosa Eskenazi sings a tsifteteli and Fide Köksal dances -> çifte telli (double-stranded in Turkish)

references:
amanes, ghazzal & layali songs.
Turkish music in Istanbul at the turn of the century

*The name is related to Kazanci, as in Elif Safak's novel The Bastard of Istanbul.

message 23: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 71 comments I'm a big fan of more classical genres with songs like Lama Bada Yatathana. As far as artists I really like Umm Kalthoum, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, Fairuz, Abdul Halim Hafez, Cheb Mami, Cheb Khalid, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, and Warda. More modern artists I like Hakim, Amr Diab, Nancy Ajram, and Tarkan. I love Arabic Music in general both newer genres as well as older ones but I don't care as much for newer hip hop, rap, and popular music as it's too western sounding. It's like listening to American songs but sung in Arabic. I like the unique musical stylings and structure of Middle Eastern music and the newer stuff seems to lose more and more of that every year. There just isn't much tarab left in the music.

Tarab ...:) I didn't hear that for a while now ...
I love Abdul Halim Hafez (He is my no 1)
For the modern voices , did you hear Asala , Angham or Zekra ?

Jalilah | 919 comments Great thread! I love all kinds of Arabic music from traditional folklore like the late Saidi master Metqal Qenawi to classic like Om Kalsoom and Abdel Halim Hafez to modern fusion stuff like the Fathy Salama and his group Sharkiat. I also adore a lot of the Levantine music from traditional Debke to Feyrouz to modern underground groups like Soap Kills. I am more familiar with music from these countries, but also like a lot of the Khalijy (Arabian Gulf) as well Magribian music I have heard.

message 31: by Hagar (new)

Hagar (hagarrina) | 5 comments I'm also a huge fan of Sayyed Darwich. During his short life he composed some of the greatest arabic musical pieces that are still played and sung nowadays.

There's a young egyptian singer who interprets Darwish's repertoire brilliantly.

Niraj 123 (njdreads) | 27 comments What a great thread to casually stumble upon :P I'm a huge fan of 'world music', but specifically music from across the MENA region.

Jalilah, a fan of Soapkills too! Got their Best Of album which came out this year - is it really true everyone rates them as THE underground/fusion band to have come out of the area? I read an article written by a musicology professor who visited Lebanon who asked his class to bring in the best piece of cutting-edge modern Arabic music they knew of, and everyone apparently hauled in their Soapkills cds...

There's a really great compilation album called Sawtuha - 'Nine women singers from Egypt, Tunisia and Libya and a Bonus track from Syria' it's marketed as. All the female singers are relatively unknown, and some Western producers add in hip hop beats, underground elements, various samples to make a wonderful mix.

Also, anyone on here a fan of Aiwa - the French/Iraqi band? Love everything these guys did... Two Iraqi brothers now based in Rennes in France, who rap in Arabic, while their producer, Severine, added her own hypnotic vocals and chants in English.

And a fan of Samira Said, Khaled, Cheb i Sabbah too...
