i find it funny how the media in different places can show the same story in so many different lights and with so many different facts. each shows what they want and hides the rest.

take for example the reports on the Jenin 'massacure' in 2002 during operation defensive shield by the Israeli Defense Force:
[the following are all quotes from different newspapers or essays people wrote]

Aljazeerah

the Israeli occupation forces committed a massacre in which hundreds of Palestinians were killed. Initial estimates were more than 500 children, women, and men...

Israeli Army bulldozer driver Moshe Nissim, also known as “Kurdi Bear,” did enjoy his work in Jenin camp, fortified by an arsenal of alcohol- His Testimony:
They were warned by loudspeaker to get out of the house before I come, but I gave no one a chance. I didn’t wait. I didn’t give one blow, and wait for them to come out. I would just ram the house with full power, to bring it down as fast as possible. I wanted to get to the other houses. To get as many as possible,” he recounts. “I didn’t give a damn about the Palestinians, but I didn’t just ruin with no reason. It was all under orders.”...
the IDF leveled the final battlefield completely after the cessation of hostilities. It is surmised that the complete destruction of the ruins of battle, therefore, is punishment for its inhabitants.”
Nissim concurs. “I found joy with every house that came down, because I knew they didn’t mind dying, but they cared for their homes. If you knocked down a house, you buried 40 or 50 people for generations. If I am sorry for anything, it is for not tearing the whole camp down,” he says. “They will sit quietly. Jenin will not return to what it use to be.”
To make sure, the Israeli army has since returned in force to the camp several times a month later in June, then in October.

[the writer promised pictures, but i couldnt find them on the page anywhere...]

The Interdependent

What is known at this juncture in history is that what the Israelis have now done in still further expanding their military occupation with such terrible bloodshed and destruction has inflamed not only the next generation of Palestinians, but a considerable part of the Arab and Muslim worlds...

Certainly don't expect the controlled and manipulated American news media to even come close to telling it like it is when it comes to what the Israelis are really doing....

A residential area roughly 160,000 square yards about a third of a mile wide has been reduced to dust. Rubble has been shovelled by bulldozers into 30ft piles. The sweet and ghastly reek of rotting human bodies is everywhere, evidence that it is a human tomb. The people, who spent days hiding in basements crowded into single rooms as the rockets pounded in, say there are hundreds of corpses, entombed beneath the dust, under a field of debris, criss-crossed with tank and bulldozer treadmarks...

We stared at a mound of debris. Here, he said, he saw the Israeli soldiers pile 30 bodies beneath a half-wrecked house. When the pile was complete, they bulldozed the building, bringing its ruins down on the corpses. Then they flattened the area with a tank. We could not see the bodies. But we could smell them...

But the descriptions given by the many other refugees who escaped from Jenin camp were understated, not, as many feared and Israel encouraged us to believe, exaggerations....

Last night there were still many families and weeping children still living amid the ruins, cut off from the humanitarian aid. Ominously, we found no wounded, although there was a report of a man being rescued from beneath ruins only an hour before we arrived...

Israel was still trying to conceal these scenes yesterday. It had refused entry to Red Cross ambulances for nearly a week, in violation of the Geneva Convention...

We feel more hate for Israel now than ever. Look at this boy. He placed his hand on the tousled head of a little boy, Mohammed, the eight-year-old son of a friend. He saw all this evil. He will remember it all. So will everyone else who saw the horror of Jenin refugee camp. Palestinians who entered the camp yesterday were almost speechless...

[once again, though the article was named 'Amid the ruins of Jenin, the gisley evidence of a war crime' there were no pictures to show anything]

the Palestinian Chronicles

The story began in April 2002, when the Israeli Defense Forces invaded the Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin, leveled it to the ground, killed more than seventy people and buried civilians alive in their demolished homes and smoldering buildings...

Anyone who watched Jenin-Jenin was struck by Bakri’s genuine capacity to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the midst of a wasted camp. Neither ideology nor politics was allowed into the narrative. Bakri does not talk in the film. He allows residents from the camp to tell their own story. His commitment to truth was the only narrative operating in the film...

We shall not let our criticism of Israel’s violence against Palestinian fall into wasted polemics and political exercise. Nor shall we forget that for a country founded on racist colonial mentality, violence is not subject to moral negotiation....

that was one side. here is the other

an Israeli doctor who served in Jenin during the operation

i watched the movie 'Jenin Jenin', and at the end of the showing, i stood up and pointed out the seven lies that were in it. one woman stood up and said angrily "if you dont accept the facts in the movie, you obviously dont understand anything. how can you even be a doctor?!"
for a moment i forgot that i had been in Jenin during the operation, and the woman who had said that got her facts only through rumors.
the director of the movie laces together lies and half- truths masterfully, and it was hard not to fall for the illusions he created.
the seven lies in the movie 'Jenin Jenin':

1. the head of the Jenin hospital claims that the western wing of the hospital was blown up and destroyed by the IDF. there was no such wing, and no wing of the hospital was bombarded. the IDF made sure not to even enter the hospital, even though they knew that some terrorists were hiding out in there.

2. the movie shows an old man, who claims he was taken out of bed, shot in his hand and again in his leg when he wouldnt get up. the man in question was brought to me to take care of. he did have a light injury in his hand and his leg was slightly scratched.

3. according to the movie, a baby died after he was shot in his chest and the IDF didnt let him go out to get medical attention. the body of this baby was never found. more so, going to hospital wouldnt have helped a baby with such a critical injury. what was the babies name? where is its body?

4.one of the people interveiwed claims that he opened a child's airway with his finger after the child was injured. it is physically impossible to do such a thing. the same man claims that tanks ran over people again and again until they were flattened. such a thing never happened.

5.the director claims that the IDF made a mass- burial for the people it murdered to cover up the number of people. all the international organizations agree that all 52 bodies were given to Palestinians for proper burial.

6. the movie mentions that IDF planes bombarded the city from above. they didnt. to minimize civilian casualty, they used only direct fire from helicopters.

7. the pictures show the area of destruction in a way that makes it seem much bigger then it really was. the Jihadic writings and slogans from the walls of the houses were erased from the pictures.
pictures of tanks from one place were photoshoped onto pictures of Palestinian children to make it look like they were running them over.

[if the writing level in this piece is on a lower level then the others, it is only because i had to translate it to english from its original hebrew...]

The Weekly Standard

the Palestinian news agency Wafa was reporting that Israel had committed the "massacre of the 21st century" in the Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin. "Medical sources" informed Wafa of "hundreds of martyrs." This was a lie...

But the "hundreds" of martyrs were a cynical invention. The death toll was 56 Palestinians, the majority of them combatants, and 23 Israeli soldiers....

he Jenin fraud has been almost entirely inflated and then deflated in the short space of a month. I think it's safe to say that no one will win a Pulitzer for reporting on the (non-existent) "massacre of the 21st century." This was amateur-hour propaganda, and any reporter who fell for it should be mortified...

Ha'aretz

But above all, his film is a harsh, wide-ranging indictment of Jews in general and Israelis in particular. Unscripted black-and-white segments are interspersed with staged segments. Bakri wanders through the refugee camp following Operation Defensive Shield, recording the testimony of local residents: a young man; a 12-year-old girl; a mute teenager; a woman who was shot in the legs and gave birth under fire; an old man wounded by an Israeli soldier; a hospital director and the "village idiot" - a mentally unstable young man whose condition worsened after the Israeli offensive....

The film's message, conveyed without subtlety, leaves no room for doubt: The Israelis are savage, cold-hearted, inhumane and cowardly killers who like to prey on the weak - on women and children. The Palestinians are innocent victims who have never done a single bad thing to the Israelis and who want nothing more but to live in peace and quiet. And for this, they are tortured and murdered by the army of the cruel, occupying nation. But despite it all, they are brave, their spirit is strong and therefore they will triumph. Or, to be more precise, they have already triumphed in this battle; the Israelis have lost....

The movie contains not a single word about the suicide bombers. Not a word about the Israeli men, women and children who have been killed and wounded during this intifada. Not a word about Israel's official reason - justified or not - for launching the offensive in Jenin. (Israel launched Operation Defensive Shield after the terror attack in the Park Hotel in Netanya on Passover eve.) Not a word about the circumstances that produced the escalating violence and the deteriorating situation. Not a word about the battle cries spouted by Arafat and other Palestinian leaders. Nary a mention of the relentless terror machines that are Hamas and Islamic Jihad. No suggestion that there may be some Israelis who are any less terrible than the murderous IDF soldiers. And not a single word from an Israeli...

Wikipedia

Jenin
See also: Battle of Jenin
Jenin became a central base for terror groups and terror attacks mounted by several organizations, including Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, and Hamas. Of the 60 suicide bomber that attacked Israel in 2002, 23 came from Jenin.
On April 2, more than 1,000 IDF soldiers entered the camp, calling civilians and non-combatants to leave. An estimated 13,000 Palestinians were housed in Jenin prior to the operation.
The operation was led by the Fifth Infantry brigade, which had not yet been trained in close-quarters combat. During a series of sweeps, the Israeli military claimed the entire camp was booby-trapped. At least 2,000 bombs and booby traps were planted throughout the camp.[22] In response to the discovery, the Israelis dispatched a combat bulldozer to detonate any bombs that were placed in the streets.
Israeli commanders were still not confident that soldiers would be safe from booby traps and IEDs. A rapid ground attack would clearly be costly in IDF lives, but political pressure from the United States and elsewhere required a rapid end to the fighting. Former minister defense Shaul Mofaz promised combat-operations would be over by April 6, but that was clearly impossible.[23] The IDF slowly advanced into the city, encountering fierce resistance. Most of the fighting was conducted by infantry fighting house-to-house, while armored bulldozers were used to clear away booby traps and IEDs. Air support was limited to helicopters firing wire-guided missiles.[24] Palestinian commander Mahmoud Twalbe was killed by an Israeli bulldozer according to a British military expert, and blew himself up to collapse a house on Israeli soldiers, according to the Palestinians.
On the 3rd day of operations, an IDF unit accidental wandered into a Palestinian ambush. 13 Israeli soldiers were killed and three of the bodies were captured before a Shayetet 13 naval commando unit could retrieve them.
After the ambush, the Israeli military developed a tactic that allowed units to advance father and more safely into the camps. Israeli commanders would send an armored bulldozers to ram the corner of a house, creating a hole.[23] A IDF Achzarit would then enter the hole, allowing troops to clear the house without going through booby-trapped doors. Palestinian resistance was halted following the adoption of the bulldozer method, and most residents of the Hawashin neighorhood surrendered before it was leveled. Palestinian commander Hazem Qabha refused to surrender and was killed.
Throughout the Battle of Jenin, and for a few days afterwards, the city and its refugee camp were under total closure. There was much concern at the time about possible human rights violations occurring in the camp. Allegations of a massacre in Jenin were spread by Palestinians in order to create pressure on Israel to halt the operation. Claims of complete destruction of the Jenin refugee camp, a massacre of 500 civilians, and mass graves being dug by Israeli soldiers were proven false after a United Nations investigation.hare Reports of a large-scale massacre were found to be untrue, a result of confusion resulting from the Israeli refusal to allow entry to outside observers, and/or Palestinian media manipulation.[25][26]
Ultimately, the Jenin incursion resulted in the deaths of 52 Palestinians. According to Israel, five were civilians[citation needed], while the rest were militants. Human Rights Watch reported that 27 militants and 22 civilians, as well as three unidentified persons, had been killed, based mostly on witness interviews. Israeli losses totalled 23 dead and 75 wounded.

((this one seems more one- sided then the other Wikipedia post below...))

and finally, here is what Wikipedia has to say about the whole matter:

The Battle of Jenin (April 1–11, 2002) took place in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) entered the camp, and other areas under the administration of the Palestinian Authority, during the Second Intifada, as part of Operation Defensive Shield. The Jenin camp was targeted after Israel determined that it had "served as a launch site for numerous terrorist attacks against both Israeli civilians and Israeli towns and villages in the area."[4]
The IDF employed armored bulldozers to clear out booby traps laid inside the camp, alongside infantry, commando forces, and assault helicopters. Resistance by Palestinian militants was fiercer than expected, and after an Israeli column walked into a deadly ambush, the army began to rely more heavily on the use of bulldozers. On April 11, Palestinian militants began to surrender. Israeli troops began withdrawing from the camp on April 18.
Jenin remained sealed throughout the invasion and rumors of a massacre circulated.[5] Stories of hundreds or thousands of civilians being killed in their homes as they were demolished spread throughout the Arab world. Subsequent investigations found no evidence to substantiate claims of a massacre. At least 52 Palestinians, mostly gunmen and 23 IDF soldiers were killed in the fighting

i have tried to be as objective as possible and present both sides.

i am interested to see what people make of this case and others like it.
can we really trust the media to give us the truth?
how are we supposed to know if we are really getting the whole story, or if we are just being brainwashed?
and i think this would also be a good time to bring up the question whether a news report can be objective, or if it is impossible for humans not to bring their own agenda into their piece, no matter how hard they try.

i would like to point out that we can never really know what really happened. none of us were there, and obviously both sides brought such different stories, and it is so easy to corrupt pictures and hide facts etc.

Naomi (purplebookdragon) | 202 comments omg, siareen we just talked about this movie today when i was at the supreme court. cuz last week there was a lawsuit about it and i think in the end the verdict was that the guy who made the movie had to apologize to the soldiers and say that it wasn't a documentary at all, or something like that.
