Agree with your review of Empire of Wealth (interesting yet dry at times). After Ascent of Money, would recommend Against the Gods, which I find to be the best book that connects banking and finance with general economic activity. Again this gets a little slow in the middle, but the beginning and end are very good and worth plowing through the drier sections.
`sounds interesting. Why don't you put AGAINST THE GODS on our "Shelf"?

Looks like Mark was a step ahead of me by putting Against the Gods on the shelf. Another good read after you've finished Ascent of Money is THE GREAT INFLATION AND ITS AFTERMATH by Robert Samuelson. While it is about the run up of inflation through the 60s and 70s, it presents a pretty clear picture of where we are headed given current fiscal and monetary policy.
