Does anyone have any personal experiences they'd like to share? Please tell us where, when and what happened!

Ohhhh! That is freaky!! My friends and I tried that when I was a kid. Nothing happened, but just the story of it has haunted me to this day. Even now, when I'm in my room at night, I don't look directly into the mirror...just in case!

Yolanda Renee (httpwwwgoodreadscomyolandarenee) | 7 comments Emma and Tricia, you both have more nerve than I do. Of all the things I did as a child, I never tempted the evil spirits. I refused to play with the Ouija board and while I've heard all the ghost stories told around the campfire, I've just never had the nerve. An almost trip to a grave yard at midnight had me so scared that my boyfriend was more afraid of me than any ghost out there.
I'm very empathic -- sensitive. With nightmares that seem real and dreams that come true. I'm a real chicken.
At one time I could not drive my own vehicle. On a date in my truck, my boyfriend was driving, I had a vision of myself going through the windshield, and ending up shredded on the side of the road. It came on suddenly and I put it out of my mind, even though it frightened me. The next day when I went to get into my truck to drive to work, I couldn't do it. I stood there covered in sweat with that feeling of immobility you get in your worst nightmare. That scene of me on the highway all bloody and cut up was in my head and I could not even touch the door handle.
This went on for two weeks, and then suddenly it disappeared. I'd never experienced anything like it before or since. Which I'm glad of for several reasons; just try explaining to people why you can't get into your own truck. Anyone ready to call the men in the white coats--several of my friends were.

Yolanda, what an incredible story! I can totally relate with the dreams coming true. That's happened to me, too. Nothing quite like what you describe. I get those intuitive flashes, like one night I was driving home from work, going a wee bit faster than I should have, and for some unexplainable reason I began to slow down. Really slow, like 10mph. And just like that, a deer jumped in front of my car. If I had been driving as fast I as normally did...

In regards to the graveyard you mention, I have to tell you, my grandmother lived 2 houses away from a cemetery. My brother and I played in that cemetery. We flew kites, rode our bikes and played other games. I didn't realize until I got older that kids generally don't play in graveyards like we did.

Oh, and I think you did the right thing by not driving those 2 weeks. Any feeling that strong should NOT be ignored.

Maria Carmo (mariacarmo) | 7 comments Hello! What interesting stories.
I, for one, much prefer stories of FRIENDLY Ghosts - such as when a dead relative helps someone or sends them a helping hint in a dream...

I have had many dreams that came true, especially when I was younger.

I will tell some stories soon. Is there a space to add short stories? And do we remain with the right to use them, or do these become Goodreads exclusive property?

Maria Carmo

Good question, Maria. I have no idea. I've seen other groups on here who do share their short stories, but I'll look into it and let you know what the deal is.

Wendy *Sebella Blue* Mitchell (goodreadscomblueshedevil32) When my family and I lived in Elizabeth City, N.C., we lived in an old antebellum mansion called the Vicki Villa. Don't ask me why, I never looked into it. It was my parents, me (15 years old), and my two younger brothers (12 and 1).We started noticing strange things immediately. Doors slamming, windows opening and closing, but no one said anything because we were a snarky bunch at that time. One thing we couldn't ignore though was what was going on in my youngest brothers nursery. Nothing could be left on top of the dressers or chest. The minute you walked out of the door, what ever was left out was thrown on the floor. This was in the mid 1970's so there wasn't the peranormal research available today. We just figured that since it didn't hurt anything, we were good. Lots more to come.

Pamela | 45 comments I had plenty since I was young. Newest ones are since I started writing the ghost books and joined a couple of paranormal investigating groups, too. Last for this was when I led one of the groups into a historical park (Henricus) that never had been done before and all was detailed in my book, Haunted Richmond II I am working to finish and send off to publisher by end of next week. Saw lamps that just began swigning right before my eyes, a tall man-like shadow walk right past me on my right side, etc...The rest of the group had experiences too.

One thing from my younger days was when i was in high school and my geography class went on a field trip to Old Town in San Diego and I happened to peer through a window that looked on the courtroom of the Whaley House and saw this woman in old-fashioned 1800s clothing and her black hair in a bun walking through the courtroom to pass through the doorway into the hall, so I ran over to next window my friend had just vacated and the woman had vanished! We saw the front door open as it was a nice Spring day, I guess, and we noticed women sitting in back. We walked in and asked them about the tour guide in the costume (they weren't wearing costumes) and they said they did not wear costumes. I mentioned I saw her in the courtroom, but she had disappeared. One docent asked me to describe the woman, so I did. She looked at me and said, "Honey, you saw the ghost of Mrs. Whaley."

The ghost had looked very solid.

That story just the tip of what I experienced when younger. I even had my fathere haunt our place for three days when he passed away when i was still in college.

That's incredible! How neat to see a ghost and not even know it! I've often wondered during my trips to Gettysburg, if the re-enactors I saw were really ghosts! I can't wait to hear more!

Angela (question_real_or_fake) I believe in ghosts, I’ve had lot of different things happen to me that has made me believe.

First I had to move to Texas when I was young due to may parents death. I moved in with my grandmother and great grandmother who my mother was named after. So I became very close to my great grandmother, I would have nightmares and go sleep with her. I won’t talk to anyone and always stayed by her. I would sleep walk and try to leave the house., only her voice and touch would calm me down. A few years went by and she got very sick and had to be taken to the hospital. She didn’t come out. One night while she was still in the hospital holding on till all her child came, I was at my aunts. It was Friday October the 13th I was sleeping and dreaming of my mother and great grandmother. She was telling me how sorry there where for leaving me but that they would still be around to take care of me. I woke up crying at 3 am telling my Aunt that mama Tillie ( my great grandmother) had died and wasn’t coming home. She was comforting me till I went back to sleep. At 5am my grandmother called saying that Mama Tillie died about two hours ago, after all her children where with her. She started to cry and my uncle was with her when I came in to the room. I told them about my dream and what she had said and how she look so young in my dream but I knew it was her. I explain what she had on and what she look like to my aunt, she stop crying got up and went to get some thing form the closet. It was a picture of Mama Tillie when she was in her 30’s or so. My aunt said my face lit up and I told her that was her before she said anything. I had never seen the picture before, my aunt had kept it the closet the whole time. I didn’t meet my great grandmother till she was in her 70’s and she didn’t have lot picture around due to a flood that happen a time ago when she lost most of them. Never the less to say my aunt believed me and was a bit scared she still never asks about my dreams. For I would still have nightmares and walk in my sleep, till the day the moved me in to her old room. The sleep walking stopped, but I still have nightmares and dreams that come true.

Second the main school here in this small town is an old fort from the army, it has from p-k to 12 grade all in the same area. All the class are held in the old building that were use for living quarters, offices, training rooms, and even the old hospital was still there. Where the football field is use to be the army cemetery ( all the bodies were moved to San Antonio). The school had a lock-in one year for the 8th grade class we were going to sleep in the build the whole night. It was where we had our classes, it was used as barracks back when it was a fort. We ate to much junk food was started watching so called scary movies. Me and my friend we sitting on the window steal watching the TV, I was bored and was looking out the window down at the road that went to the marching yard. When I saw a man standing in the middle of the road, dressed up just like a cowboy one see in the old west movies. Cowboy hat, boots and along black duster. Then another man came into view dressed like a solider, they started to fight. First I didn’t say anything thinking maybe I was just seeing things from all the sugar I ate, then I looked at my friend and she was white as a ghost her self. I asked her if she was seeing the same thing and she nodded yes. We continue to watch on, what we saw was one man killing the other it went on for 20 min then nothing. Like they were never there. We just sat there freaking out till the teacher came in and scared us. We told her but of course she didn’t believe us. She even went outside and took a look to clam us down, but of course saw nothing. Everyone made fun of us, thinking that we were trying to scare them and that’s all. We didn’t let it go the Monday after that lock-in we went to my grandmother to ask what she knew about the fort. See my grandmother was born and lived on the fort when it was still used as an army station. She told us that a lot of murders happen back then, but there was one that most people knew about. A man was waiting for a lover, the spot of course the one we saw from the window. When a jealous revival stop the women from going and went him him self and killed the man. We told her what we saw and she said that maybe that was them. She believed me due to the whole dream thing.

I could go on and on with all the things that have happened to me or around me that could never be explained but with that it had to be a ghost. Till this day things happen, needed less to say I freak out a lot of people and family.

What a touching story about your great-grandmother, Angela! It's so comforting to dream of your loved ones who've passed, to know there still is some connection with them. Even if we can't see or here them, they are there. So far, I've had several dreams where my loved ones have visited me to say good-bye. Even my two dogs!

Does anyone else in your family ever have dreams come true? I've often wondered if it's a hereditary trait, as I've had the same experience with my dreams(and two very disturbing nightmares).

That's so neat that you had a friend witness the soldier ghost fighting. And for your grandmother to know a story that might be some sort of connection to what happened, very interesting!

The dreams have only happend to me. I don't know my fathers side of the family so maybe they have the same type of dreams.
My grandmother was a wild child, and she caused a lot of touble her days too. I even asked her if it was over her, she didn't say no right away...LOL. All her borthers and sisters grow up on the fort even one was baried and his body moved. So I've heard alot about it and have found alot of pics.
As for my friend she lived in a house that was bulit over part of the old cemetery and lots of things happen in her home and others near by.Her parents still live there and laugh because most of the active would alway happen when I was there. Now that its been years that I have stayed over, her mother says nothing ever happens any more. They think it only happen because I was around.
Here at my house now things happen and it's a new home in a new area.

My husband had something strange happen last night. Around midnight, he climbed into bed and just as he settled in, he felt something touch his cheek. As he was trying to figure out what touched his cheek, he heard a whisper near his ear. Then the air around his legs got cold. He nudged me with his hand and whispered to try to wake me up so I could feel the cold spot too, but I was fast asleep and just grunted to him. And, just like that, the cold spot was gone. He can't figure out what the whisper was, whether it was male or female, and it was too soft to understand what it said. He said, it might have been Harvey, Charlie, Barbie, something with an 'ee' sound at the end. As for the cold spot, it gave him chills. And that's saying something since it was about 90 degrees in our house last night because we haven't installed the air conditioners yet. It was like an oven in our room! It would have been a relief to feel a little cold air! I just wish I hadn't been so sleepy. I would have like to have experienced it. Whatever 'it' was.

Angela (question_real_or_fake) I have a DUWENDE (ghost) is what they tell me. Been seeing people next to me in the mirrors around my house. I moved my bed room around and now have a large mirror next to the bed and I can see my self getting in and out. Plus what ever goes on just outside the bed room door. keep seeing a face next to me or at the door and when I look around and back no one there. The bathroom u can see the door behind you when your looking in the mirror. I see someone standing there looking at me. Its getting to be an eveyday thing. Plus when I'm in the living room I can be thinking that I should trun off the or on the fan or light and it happens. Always have seen ghosts or something that couldn't be explained but now its freaking me out a bit now. No one else in my house has seen anything but me. My father in-law says some one is watching over me. Who knows whats going on.

Angela (question_real_or_fake) So I’m still seeing the shadows behind me in the mirrors, when no one else is home. Lights still turning on by them self’s. Doesn’t feel malicious in any way. For the first time last night I was reading and it was around 2 in the morning I could feel something moving my leg. I was on my side facing the wall with a pillow between my knees. I thought it was my son but when I looked no one there. So I went back to reading. Again it happened it went on for about 20 min with me never seeing anything. It’s just weird all this happening to me.

Angela, have you tried capturing EVPs? Leave a tape recorder running. If you notice there is a certain pattern to when things are occurring, then during that pattern of time, leave a recorder running or turn on the recorder and ask questions. Sometimes a tape recorder can pick up things that the human ear cannot. Keep us updated. You said that it doesn't seem malicious, so that is good, but be careful. And, DON'T use a ouija board. Dangerous and nothing but trouble in my opinion!

Nate (nate_riddle) | 1 comments I actually set out to write my first book due to personal experiences with ghosts and a life-long interest in the subject. I'd seen, heard and read too many accounts from too many people the world over to ignore the idea of ghosts and hauntings as mere fantasy.

I encountered what I feel was a ghost in a historic hotel in east Texas several years back, and the encounter was not nearly what I would have imagined even with a lot of knowledge on the subject. I was shaken by it, and in some ways it really changed my perspective on what life, the afterlife and even other forms of life could be.

I think a lot of people are curious, and seek out info to validate or dismiss their own experiences and that's why I set out to write an accessible, fun and thought-provoking book on ghosts and hauntings. I didn't want to shy away from those who believe they've had encounters, or from the skeptics out there who make very valid and interesting points as well.

The book's agenda is to get people thinking about the possibilities, providing them with some different perspectives and ultimately a well-rounded approach to what is still a very confounding phenomena.

For those of you that have had experiences or wish you had a book to share with a friend or family member that doesn't believe in ghosts, I really think my book gets you thinking and provides some great stories and anecdotes for further discussion.

Check it out here on Goodreads or at www.facebook.com/lonestarspooks and www.lonestarspooks.com , hope you enjoy it!

Angela (question_real_or_fake) So for 2 months I’ve let all alone. I guess they didn’t like it much or just want to show me more. Lights are still being turn on and still hearing foot step’s. I still didn’t mind it at all. But last night I was in bed and I saw several shadows. My bed is against a wall and I have a small table and a light lamp on the side for reading. The light shines toward the other wall across the bed. No one can walk behind it, it’s also is against the wall in the corner to the side wall. And to close to the side wall and bed for some one to walk across my bed is about 3 feet from the side wall. (I have a very small room.) So I’m looking at my computer and can see a shadow walk across the wall. I think to my self your seeing things. Then about 30 min after again and I saw a full person walk across. My son in his room and my dog on my med with me. So who was it know idea! But it went on for the next 4 hours. Not sure what to do. I’m not really scared just a bit freaked.

I just felt like sharing to get it off my chest.

Robert Tucker | 3 comments We live in an old, large, Victorian house in upstate New York. Most of my family has had at least one experience. I might have. One night my wife and I were both awaken by a loud thump. The back door to our bedroom was still moving when we awoke. I ran through it and down the stairs to make sure we didn't have an intruder. No one was there. I know that's not a very exciting story, but my son has a better one. He was about twelve and he was at the computer in the front parlor. All of the sudden he noticed an old man standing by the fireplace. The old man said "Get out of my house." My son said, "No, this is my house." The old man disappeared. My son was a little freaked ouit, but otherwise very brave.

Very cool, Mary. The part about ghosts walking through walls jogged my memory about another incident my son had. His bedroom was right above the aforementioned parlor, and one night he woke up to see a human arm reaching up through the floor. If he was telling me the truth, he really was very brave. As far as the parlor goes, I'm certain that whever somebody died in the house, that's where the body would lie for calling hours.

message 35: by Armada (new)

Armada Volya | 2 comments We bought a house last summer and it's haunted. I noticed it the first night I stayed there. I was doing some last minute fixes almost all night long. When I stopped to eat, I felt someone watching me from the basement. I got a feeling that whatever happens I shouldn't go down there at night. It felt dangerous.
I was in the basement fixing plumbing many times during the day and felt nothing. I've had experiences with ghosts before and it never gave me this vibe of danger.
The basement is partial and there is one place with a double wall. At first we thought is was there to give extra support to the foundation, but when we took a better look at this extra wall, it didn't seem that way anymore. The extra wall is too thin and is a foot from the wall it should've been supporting. There are a couple of bricks missing, so we were able to look behind it. There aren't any dead bodies.
Right in front of the wall there is a clay bed. We found a triangular symbol burned into the bed. After looking more into the symbol, we found that it's probably from a demon binding ritual.
We kept the trapdoor to the basement closed after that. Every now and again we heard someone tapping at the trapdoor.
We found two more entities on the first floor and second floor. On the first floor we found a hotspot in the middle of one of the bedrooms. Since we had the house rewired, I know it can't be that. There are no hot water pipes running under that room and we haven't installed heating yet.
My husband and I started having nightmares about a woman with seaweeds in her hair and bird-legs.
We looked into the history of the house and I think we figured out what happened. There were three deaths in two years here: mother, older son and younger son. After that the house was inherited by the youngest daughter. We couldn't find out what happened to the other daughter, but I'm assuming she married and changed her name. The family was Polish. The woman we were seeing in our dreams looked like kikimora from Slavic mythology.
To put a kikimora into the house builders would sometimes put a doll made of pieces of fabric and sticks into the foundation. I think that's what the extra wall is there for.
We've been burning white sage ever since we figured out what the woman was and it's gotten much better. The ghosts from the fist and second floor are gone now. The kikimora is still there, but she's too weak to do anything. It looks like the kikimora bound herself to the ghost of the mother, but it seems she let go of it and the ghost left the house.
It doesn't seem like we can get rid of the kikimora unless we knock down the wall and find the doll.

Tim Prasil (timprasil) I volunteer at our local community theater, and of course, almost every theater has its ghost.

I wrote about ours at http://www.townandgown.org/ghost.html . That's a bit out of date, but the sightings that have occurred since I wrote it seem to continue along the same lines: hearing one's name spoken . . . but there's no one there. Catching sight of someone climbing the stairs out of the corner of one's eye . . . but there's no one there. Footsteps. Memorabilia from past plays swaying on its own. A long, creepy hallway that no one ever walks down in the dark.

Good stuff.
