Personally, I love the idea of mutated hybrids. For some reason a zombie werewolf sounds scary as hell. Think about it. Abnormally strong, fast, and able to transmit a crazy virus.

Jeanette Raleigh | 3 comments Hmmm..*nods to self* I can see a lot of possibilities with hybrids.

I think our lore needs more monsters...we're getting to the point where vampires aren't even scary...they're just like big teddy bears that like to make out and will only drink blood politely from red cross containers.

Glynn James (glynnjames) My books pretty much depend on hybrids and mutations of various traditional "monsters", so I guess I fall into "Love them" category :)

I like to mix cute with horror too. If you take something cute from a child's fairy tale and mix it with horror, you end up giving a whole new class of people nightmares. :)

message 5: by Glynn (new)

Glynn James (glynnjames) I like to mix hybrids of "natural" creatures to make monsters out of them. Such as a panther and a lizard. One of my "monsters" is a creature that moves like a giant cat but has scales/horns/spikes like a reptile.

T. Johnston Hybrids can be a good thing in one look but it can also be what night mares are made of in another view. I would have to say it depends what the hybrid is made of. I think you could make a lot of good books based on some really good hybrids.

Bennie (lochinvar45) | 11 comments Working on a story now with a hybrid in it. It's set in a bio-lab but is told from an overnight janitors POV.

message 8: by T. (new)

T. Johnston That sounds interesting. You will have to keep me updated on it Bennie.

Rick Gualtieri (rickgualtieri) | 7 comments I'm split on hybrids. On the one end you can get some truly terrifying results.

On the other end...things like Mansquito. :)

message 10: by T. (new)

T. Johnston It does depend on what type of Hybrids you are talking about if they are cool or not.

I liked the vampire/werewolf hybrid (Michael Corvin) in the Underworld films because as a kid I always wondered what would happen if a vampire bit a werewolf.

In my book Dark Albion, there is a story which features a were-shark. Not strictly the type of hybrid being discussed on here, but the idea of writing about something outside the norm appealed to me :)

Sam (mayonayz) | 1 comments I love the idea of hybrids amongst vampires, werewolves, etc... Who's to say they can't evolve and change like humans did? I think they've been left static for awhile, but I love reading books where they have been changed, but still have roots to the vapires, werewolves, etc... of old.

When I was a kid, I used to always wonder, "What would happne if a vampire bit a wereolf?" so I wish the idea had been around back then. LOL..me and the neighborhood kids used to have our own "monster club" (like in the movie Monster Sqaud), and we used to talk about stuff like that all the time!

I used to ask myself the same question, too. I believe many cultures used to believe that if someone were a werewolf, then when they died they would continue on as a vampire. So I suppose this shows how closely the two are linked. Their major difference being that the werewolf is alive, whilst the vampire is (un)dead.
Unfortunately, this does nothing to solve the question of 'what would happen if?'

True, David, that is an old slavic legend. I've read about it.

There must be a good story in there, somewhere :)

It was a long time ago, I'd have to read that again.

Lucy | 7 comments Did anyone ever see the movie "The Monster Club" with Vincent Price? It's an older flick...kinda lower budget, and I saw it years ago when I was a kid (would like to see it again, but can't find it anywhere.) The one thing I remember about the movie was that they had a monster called a shadmock. It was a hybrid of some kind, human and I'm not sure what. There was also a humeghoul (half human, half ghoul). It got me thinking...if you could create a hybrid, using human and any other kind of monster, what would you create? What features would it have? What could it do?

Yep, I remember that movie. It was out around 1981 (I think), had a plethora of famous old actors in it. Remember the whole film being available on YouTube a year or so back, so may be worth a look on there for it.
As for hybrids, I remember when I was a kid, and reading a Batman comic where he fought a Man-Bat. A Man-Bat would be cool.
Although from a horror perspective, then Maybe a human/rat hybrid could create a few chills. Especially once it garnered a taste for human flesh :)

Antony Stanton (antonyjstanton) | 20 comments I just posted on the subject of 'old school vs new school' re: vampires, and this subject is fairly similar, to me. I think a hybrid is not a bad idea - it is surely someone developing the possibility of something new. A new idea, a new direction. A new story. Some may work, some may be a little daft, but without experimentation there would be no progress and development in the genre as a whole. That's my take on it anyway, and that's why I introduced vampires and zombies together in my book, "Once Bitten, Twice Die", just released on Amazon last month. What if a hybrid of the two occurred...? How would that play out? A vampire infected with the zombie virus - what would his cognitive state be like? If vampires are hard core anyway, how on earth would humans cope with a zombified vamp? Especially when you consider how many different ways there would be for a vampire/zombie hybrid to occur - I can think of at least three...

I used to think about that as a kid. "what would happen if a vampire bit a werewolf? Would you get a "werepire" or something??". LOL!! Then they did it in Underworld. But The Vampire Diaries, etc. had to copycat it. I think it's a cool idea, but zombie werewolf, zombie vampire, or something like wereolfvampireleprechaunzombie would be ridiculous.

Peter Topside Sorry, I saw this post and just had to include the discussion from the movie, I Love You, Man, lol;
