The Wheel of Time - Prequel Novel
New Spring
by Robert Jordan

It tells the story of a young Moiraine, and how she began her search for the baby boy destined to become the Dragon Reborn. It also follows a twenty-something Lan, and his battle with the Blight. The two of them are caught up together in different struggles and discover a dark plan being set into motion by the Black Ajah.

I really enjoyed New Spring.

Sure, it annoyed me that it was just thrown in where book 10 should have been released, but I forgave RJ for that.

I love back story. I'm not always a fan of prequels, but back story is entirely different. I had wanted to know HOW Moraine and Lan found each other, and WHAT exactly happened when the prophesy of the Dragon's birth was given.

New Spring filled that nich that I had been wondering about anyway. I remember being so disapointed when the topics I was looking for weren't covered in The World of the Wheel of Time.

I have a brother-in-law who tried to read this book for a year before he gave up because he just couldn't get into it. I guess it just fits in that category of either you like it or you don't. I loved it.

Ben | 113 comments not a trilogy exactly but there were supposed to be other prequels. they are not planning to do them now tho

It's too bad i'll be sad to see randland finished. I would have like to have seen the outriggers that were planned with Mat and Taun too.

But i read this after I read TEOTW and it really got me into the series more especialy knowing more about Suain

I wish that they were going to carry on with the prequels, but I guess you have to stop sometime. :(

Gianluca (gianlucag) I read New Spring right after Towers of Midnight, while waiting for A Memory of Light (which I'm gonna start soon). For some reason, I didn't have high expectations, but I actually found it quite good.
Though it's a prequel, I recommend reading it after a few other books from the series. It's not meant to be an introduction to the series, I think.

Kathryn | 32 comments I didn't really like New Spring, something about it just really annoyed me. Perhaps it is because it showed Moiraine before she turned into a bamf.

Kenneth Geary (KagedBooks) (kagedbooks) | 81 comments I really enjoyed New Spring I like seeing Moiraine in training and i read New Spring after a couple books in the main continuum before Siuan was introduced in the series at least with any significance so i liked that i already knew her.

Herbert (novelnemisus) | 17 comments I do so want more sequels! A Lus Tharon series would be amazing for a start!

Kenneth Geary (KagedBooks) (kagedbooks) | 81 comments A Lus Tharon ?

Herbert (novelnemisus) | 17 comments Kin Slayer. The first dragon. Or, the trolloc wars or, any of the older material would have been to read about. I think so anyway.

Kenneth Geary (KagedBooks) (kagedbooks) | 81 comments Oh, you mean Lews Therin gothca. I have mixed feelings about having books from those times, that is the history of the Randland and if there were books in that time then there would have to be history going back further, and that might dissort the storyline.

Myself I would have like to have seen the outriggers that were planned before RJ passed away, the ones about Mat and Tuon

Francesco (thekaspa) I am re-reading NS after a reading of the novella with the same title.
As much as I disliked NS in the first reading, I am appreciating the prequel more now, expecially in comparison to the novella.
One thing I still do not like, though, it's the length of the "Tower" part in comparison with the actual meeting of Moiraine and Lan. I think that this could have been ok in a trilogy, but as a standalone book I comprehend why it didn't sold well: nobody wants to read an almost useless book about Aes Sedai's customs without seeing them in action.

I at least would have liked to know the general plot for those. Wiki it's not clear whether nobody is going to write them or not, and I have mixed feelings about it.

When i went to a signing for AMOL, Harriet was there as well as Brandon and they said at this point they don't feel comfortable with those coming out.

I'm hoping that will change eventually, especially with how much Mat has changed thoughout the series. I used to not like him that much but he shifted up to my 2nd favorite, Perrin will alaways be my favorite.

Megan | 3 comments I really enjoyed this book.

Luckily I was able to read it before I started the series so I was able to like it more so than those that had read the series first.

I appreciated the opportunity to get to know Moirainne and Lan before The Eye of the World started as well as getting a bit of background into the world.

I'm not sure if it helped me to appreciate the focus on Rand more or if it was just a bit of filler as an introduction but either way, I liked it and would read it again.

Leah | 18 comments I liked that book. I never liked Moiraine that much but I liked getting to know her better and was able to understand her more. I still don't particularly like her. I liked her better in New Spring.
I have always wanted to know more about Lan. He is one of the more interesting characters to me.
