Marc (fergatron) Hi,

I realized that most of the hackers have rooted their NOOKcolors and use them as tablets, which I have no issues with -- that's what I'm doing. I do have a chuckle though thinking about how many NC users actually use the e-reading feature of their device. So; if you do, let me know. And what else do you use your NC for? Sometimes I use mine as paper weight when a custom ROM installation goes terribly wrong. :D

Judy (julianka) | 7 comments I haven't rooted mine (yet) and absolutely I read on it! I read much more now than I ever did before in my life, I think it has something to do with the size, convenience, being able to shop/browse for books. I have a "to read" list a mile long.

Peggy (dandelion_cottage) | 1 comments I haven't rooted mine either--I just love it for reading. I agree with Judy--it's the size, convenience, etc. Also being able to make the type bigger. :)

Jerry (jersysman) | 29 comments Mine is also not rooted and I use it for (gasp!) reading. I've had it for a little less than a month and I have read 4 months already and my T-Read list is ever getting longer.

Judy (julianka) | 7 comments Mine IS now rooted, I did it Friday night and I must admit I've spent the weekend playing with Android features and not doing much reading - but I did finally settle down to reading again late last night, and I just added two new books to my NC today. The best thing about rooting - you can share quotes from books whether you bought them from Barnes and noble or not!

Kathy (tx_mom_) i love my nook to read. but i also use it for facebook, twitter, and cafemom and other things i have not rooted mine and probbaly never will. because i bought to read books

Jerry (jersysman) | 29 comments I am just reading on mine at this time. I am waiting for the update of the software to come out (supposed to be this month) before I make the decision on whether or not to root it. I just hope that they do update the stock reader with additional features. It would help if you could put sideloaded books on the shelves on the homepage instead of burying them in the document directory.

Nicholas (nicholascopernicus) | 3 comments What do you guys mean by "root" it?

message 9: by Jerry (last edited Apr 15, 2011 06:55PM) (new)

Jerry (jersysman) | 29 comments Root is a way to get the NC to use the "root" Android OS instead of the crippled (my words) OS that Barnes & Noble gives us. By doing this, you open the NC up to most of the Android Marketplace.

message 10: by Nicholas (new)

Nicholas (nicholascopernicus) | 3 comments I'll wait for the software update then...BTW, will the update happen automatically with a WiFi connection?

message 11: by Neil (new)

Neil (rucknrun) I have not had one work yet over WiFi. I usually have to download it and copy it to the root directory of the internal memory. It works fine after that. This is a big update hopefully.

message 12: by Jerry (new)

Jerry (jersysman) | 29 comments I did get the 1.1 update to update over WiFi. I'm just waiting patiently for this upgrade. It has so much promise. But, with that promise, comes disappointment if it does not live up to expectations.

message 13: by LindaD (new)

LindaD (freedom333) | 8 comments The update is available today through the computer, through wifi next week. I couldn't wait!!!

message 14: by Neil (new)

Neil (rucknrun) I am happy with it. It is a nice incremental update. Hopefully people start making applications for it.

message 15: by Marc (new)

Marc (fergatron) Forgive me for sounding super nerdy, but under the hood the NOOKcolor is an Android device and there are tons of apps for it. The disconnect was B&N not supporting the Android Marketplace out-of-the-box. My NOOK is beyond the need of this update (rooted/custom ROM) so I won't get hands-on with it, but for B&N to start offering these apps they are either filtering the Android Marketplace through their own marketplace or they finally opened up the system a bit.

message 16: by Jerry (new)

Jerry (jersysman) | 29 comments @Marc - it seems that they have opened the system a crack. I really think they are testing to see how well received it will be before opening it further. I wish they would just let the flood gates open. So many good apps I could use, starting first with a better reader than the stock one they offer. But, I'm a patient man.

Jeanie | 4 comments Updated my NC this morning via my PC, and am happy with the things I have noticed so far such as video, the apps, and getting my email with one touch.

Kathy (tx_mom_) i am going to wait for my nook to update itself. if i use wifi too much it drain my battery. then when i want i cant because i have to wait to charge it

Interesting... Since you got it as a present it's one of those things that's hard to simply give back or exchange, but as a bookworm what do you think about eInk vs the LCD screen you're using on the NOOKcolor?

I asked my fiance for it so I didnt want to exchange it or give back lol I thought he was going to get me just nook but when i opened it and it was the nc i was pretty excited. Honestly I haven't read on any other ereader. This is my first one. Before the nc i just bought books but now it saves me a lot of space. I can read on the nc for hours without a problem.

Bonnie | 3 comments Don't know if you can help me but.......I have a nook and knook color. I have tons of PDF books that I can put on my nook but they don't work right on the NC. Does anyone know how to fix that? I have read several books downloaded from BN on the color but for PDF I still have to use the old nook.

I find it hard to read pdf on the nc. I convert my files to epub which work way better.

Epub is ebook format. I downloaded a program called Calibre and it converts books to different formats. It really comes in handy. If need any help with that let me know.

message 27: by David (new)

David Trim I got my nook to read mostly. Now my GF has kinda took it over. I usually get to read when im on lunch at work otherwise when we are both home she is using it. I resort to reading on my computer. But hey it is what it is right. I liked the new update i will only take the updates as they come because i really do not have the gumption to root it.

message 28: by Meg (new)

Meg (btwthepages24) | 5 comments I just purchased a Nook Color from B&N two weeks ago and I thought it was just for reading but soon found you could use the internet on it and add apps. I was thinking wow this is pretty much like a tablet but cheaper;however, I own two computers and feel that the Nook should be used for what it is purchased for. So have I used it for other things than reading...yes game apps but for regular internet use nope.
