Hi Rockstarninja, things tend to ebb and flow here. I doesn't help that the mod (me) hasn't been reading much on R3, nor do I have a lot of time to keep things hopping.

Anyone willing to volunteer to mod and liven things up, feel free to speak up!

Watch me make it happen. You stir the pot to your heart's content. I think we're reasonably safe enough here we won't get as volatile as I hear the Yahoo R3 discussions are :D

carriedaway | 4 comments I'm totally swamped at work - after tax season I should be around a bit more - I did pick up an R3 book at the library the other day.

Just jump in anytime and start a thread or add to another. I've just ordered a couple of old OOP's, one on Anne Neville and the other on Katherine Gordon. I don't have shipping confirmation yet, so I'm not 100% sure I'll get them.

Susan (boswellbaxter) | 418 comments Interested to see what you think of the Hill book. I started it, but the genealogical overload in the first few chapters drove me crazy. I might try it again sometime.

I promise frequent updates. It all depends on my mood when I get to it. There are days when I just look at the pile and it's flip the coin what shall I read next?

message 9: by Plantagenista (new)

Plantagenista | 30 comments I seem to remember that there was a discussion about (possibly) reading
The Court of the Midnight King by Freda Warrington, but cannot find it. However, has anyone here read it? I confess, it is my favourite R3 book. Though of course it is not historical fiction, but definitely Alternative Universe romance.

I think Robin read it. The used prices have been going down, but I've still been pinching my pennies. Tried for an interlibrary loan but they said there's no library in the US with a copy they could get.

message 11: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool | 91 comments I read it. Took me a while to get my head around, but I loved the decadent richness of the prose (view spoiler)

message 12: by MAP (new)

MAP | 181 comments I read about half of it. I enjoyed the alternate Richard aspect, but the witch/magic aspect of it didn't do anything for me. I feel every time I read a book about women with magic, it all goes the same direction and has the same points to make, and since I was already predicting what would happen with that aspect of it, it was bugging me and I just couldn't keep going. But I passed it on to somebody. (The book is Darkpool's).

Lol, at first I thought you were talking about the O'Brien book and I was scratching my head about the richness of the prose comment :D

Darkpool, I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoyed it for exactly these reasons. I love in particular how Warrington uses some historical tradition or facts and weaves them in to great effect, so that they suddenly make much more sense. (view spoiler)

message 15: by Claire (new)

Claire | 38 comments I read it and thought it was an enjoyable read, but it did not claim to be historically accurate. I read it a couple of years ago but it is certainly a more enjoyable read than PG's recent books.

message 16: by Debye (new)

Debye Hi! I'm a RIII newbie and new to this group. I'm a Public Librarian in Texas & take my job very seriously! :-D. I read constantly for myself-- it's just sheer luck that it helps me suggest great books to my patrons....
Anyway, is there a particular book being read right now?
Cheers, Debye

message 17: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (rockstarninja) | 35 comments Hi Debye! I'm pretty new to the group myself and its a little quiet in here. If you've got a suggestion, I'm always open to a new book about R3, and I don't think it's too forward of me to say anyone else will have a problem with a group read suggestion.

Hi Melissa and Debye, glad to see new faces here. We don't have a current read going on at the moment, and yes we are rather quiet as well.

A little brief history on this group, there was just a small lot of us who were chatting up R3 too much on each other's reviews and formed the group so we had a place to talk. Then others kept finding us and it snowballed a bit.

My reading paths have gone in other directions and I haven't read much on R3 lately.

Feel free to start a thread and/or jump into an existing one.

The bookshelf has lots of good ideas, thanks to Susan and Brian and other contributors here.

I have reas The Daughter of Time, & a friend raves about the SKP book, that happens to the only one I haven't read. I'll check out the book list. Thanks!

SKP's book is the gold standard for fictional novels on this period IMO. Wish Brian would get his finished though, he would be some good competition for it :)

Hi Mike, would you mind telling us more about your book and why it would fit the group? I don't see any info about it at the book page.

PS, we don't mind authors doing a little horn tooting, but we would appreciate you participating in the discussions as well.

message 23: by Mike (new)

Mike Voyce (mikevoyce) | 30 comments Hi Misfit,
Edward's father rebelled against R3 because he was misled by Morton - described in the book.
The Buckingham rebellion persuaded England R3 killed the Princes.
Perkin Warbeck was (probably) Prince Richard - Tudor machinations against him are in the book.
Bias in the Croyland Chronical is explained,
The effect of the half secret fact of Edward IV's illegitimacy is in the book - I could go on.

Forgive me for plugging it. Some of the stuff I've found, as others have found before me, is why we're all interested in R3.

Hi Misfit, I put "Edward" in my books - where else should I put it? Your wise advice is appreciated.

Joan Szechtman | 401 comments I also wrote a book about Richard III, but my twist is that I brought him into the 21st-century, because I felt that his story ended much too soon. The book focuses more on his character than on past historical events, but I do look at the the mystery of the princes in some detail. Like Mike, I also think that the princes probably survived Richard and that Perkin Warbeck could well have been Richard of York. I would be honored if you would consider promoting This Time to your readers. I live in Connecticut, so I couldn't personally attend a book club meeting, but I would be delighted to attend a meeting via an internet connection if that could be arranged.

And just to entice you further to take a peek at This Time, I've cited the incredible support I received from my local library in my acknowledgments. I love my library!

Thanks Mike, plugging your book is OK, we just like to see you jumping in to other discussions here as well, as you see Joan, Susan and Brian do. Their knowledge of the period is very valuable to us mere mortals :)

BTW, I finally did get a copy of your book via Paperbackswap Joan. Now to find time to read it... :)

message 28: by Claire (new)

Claire | 38 comments We just need more new good books on R3, if you look at the history
of this group we have read most of the published works which is why not much is happening at the minute!
I thought Brian was writing a new one.
I personally am not keen on the Perkin Warbeck story, the end is too depressing unless the ending is modified re The Lodestar by Pamela Belle or Treason by Meredith Whitford, both very good books for newbies.

Joan Szechtman | 401 comments That's great, Misfit, and just in time to get ready for Loyalty Binds Me (LBM), the second book about Richard III in the 21st-century.

I have a few uncorrected advanced copies of LBM for anyone who'd like to read and provide feedback, if possible. I've written the books to stand alone, so although I think it's better to read them in order to avoid spoilers, it's not necessary.

Anyone interested should send an email to me with your mailing address (US only, sorry). My email is u2nohoo@gmail.com

I'll post this as its own topic, so please don't get flummoxed by seeing it twice.

Joan

Richard Van Allen might not agree, but I think your book may highlight interesting metaphysical issues, about the exclusivity/nonexclusivity of different times and timelines - the subject for a different blog.

Thank you Mike.

Although I do discuss some things about time travel and other scientific considerations, I actually don't get into the science or science fiction too deeply in the book, since the focus is more on Richard's character. I also don't like to hit people over the head with issues, so I try to give a light non-threatening touch to some weighty issues while covering them sufficiently for the reader to ponder. Not everyone thinks I was successful.

Harvey | 35 comments This IS a bit off-beat but saw Richard III: An Arab VIP here in sunny Kuwait. Saw the premiere of the film and this show is just great!!! English/Arabic is all subtitled so everyone can understand, not to mention have more than a belly-laugh!
For timings: http://webserver2.kncc.com/advshowtim... and for info http://www.richard3anarabvip.com/Inde...
It is the film of the making and performing of Richard III: An Arab Tragedy, that I also saw some years ago here. Owes more to WS and contemporary politics than serious history but is still interesting to see Richard cropping up in the Gulf!
Enjoy!

Thanks for that... It did have a dot too many, but now corrected! I hope it does get exported. The play has traveled to South Korea, Japan, USA, UAE and UK... so far. The Kuwait theatre was once the best in the Gulf. Hopefully this represents a renaissance.
