Bobbie What's your favorite app? My iPad is too new but besides iBooks I like Mahjong. I would like to find a good writing app.

mike jay (mikeaj) Here's a cut and paste of a email I sent at friend about some free apps that I thought they'd like...

Two to show off this gorgeous screen...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/koi-po...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pocket...
Don't forget to tap the screen and scare the fish like you threw a rock in there.

I haven't used this app but I can tell it is really good if you have the TV service you have. Don't know if you ever got it working on the iPhone but here is a big incentive to call DirectTV and see what's wrong...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/direct...

NETFLIX!!!...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/netfli...

If you like ABC network shows they are here for the watching...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/abc-pl...
And ABC has a cool UI on their news app...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/abc-ne...
But there are about a thousand free news apps, my favorites are... http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/npr-fo... and... http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cnn-ap...

Full episodes from PBS on this one...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pbs-fo...

Gotta love the NASA app...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nasa-a...

A trippy one...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/newton...

Don't know if you have this on your iPhone or not but it is just awesome on the iPad. It's a little bit more in depth satellite imaging  than regular Google Maps and more user entered pictiures and information about the area you are viewing...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google...

Weather...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-we...

This is a "universal" app but only really good for the iPad. It's free. At some point down the road you may want to upgrade to the paid version (.99 cents) but that'll depend if you use the iPad as your main computer as I do. Wait and see before you buy it. I think you will too once you get used to the touch screen keyboard which is huge...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/atomic...

This is just one of tons of apps that you can can play and learn to make music. I like to put on my headphones and do these...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/celtic...

75 "best" free iPad apps with direct links...
http://artoftheiphone.com/2010/05/25/...

I post my favorites in a bit.

mike jay (mikeaj) I love "Words With Friend's". It's just like Scrabble. You can play against people from all over the world, people you know or random opponents. You can even chat with the opponent while you play. If anyone wants to challenge me to a game look for my username "mikeaj" where it asks. It is a fun game, especially if you like Scabble as much as me.

Here is the free version...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/words-...

If you like this here is a paid version without ads...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/words-...

I saw that one and I agree it looks the best for what I was looking for

Thanks what a great list you have there!

Any recommendations for a app to play music that one might have stored already?

message 6: by mike jay (new)

mike jay (mikeaj) Here are two good places to keep up on iPad news.

This one has daily videos and articles like "apps gone free" when developers let their paid apps be free for a day or so...
http://appadvice.com/appnn/category/a...

The other good place to find general iPad info is here...
http://www.ipadforums.net/

Both of these websites have apps as well. The top one is 99¢ though and it's a universal app.

mike jay (mikeaj) ☻Bobbie☻ wrote: "mike wrote: "Any recommendations for a app to play music that one might have stored already? "

Sorry, I don't see what you mean by this question.

On another note...
Do you know how to multi-task, like fast app switching? It makes everything so much easier plus saves a bunch of battery juice.

message 8: by mike jay (new)

mike jay (mikeaj) With this one you can search the web with your voice or even by taking a picture of something you want to find out about (try a book cover first)...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google...

Google has a bunch of cool apps like this one and they are all free. Just search "google" in the app store and they'll all pop up.

message 9: by mike jay (new)

mike jay (mikeaj) This one is a iPhone app...
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/5-0-ra... ...it's live police, fire, ATC and railroad scanners from all over the world. This app is free as all I post here will be unless otherwise noted.

All iPhone apps work on the iPad but they don't fill the whole screen. You can double size them but even then they don't fill it completely and are a little pixelated. But on audio apps like this one it doesn't really matter.

message 10: by mike jay (new)

mike jay (mikeaj) Great labyrinth tilt game. Really shows off the gyroscope features...

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/labyri...

Has progressive levels that get harder and harder. Surprising that it's a free and and contains not even a tiny ad bar.

mike jay (mikeaj) Besides FaceTime which is the free native phone app (and functions like the ones they had in the old Jetson's cartoon) and only works with others with FaceTime on the iPad or iPhone you can turn your iPad into a regular phone and talk to anybody, even land lines. And you can still surf the web and use apps while talking. The iPad can function as a speaker phone, the mic is very sensitive so you don't need to hold it up to face.

This is just one of the many, many ways to do this...

http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-genera...

...like FaceTime there is no charge ever, like, they are all unlimited free minutes when used over Wi-Fi.

mike jay (mikeaj) Here are video guided tutorials about using the iPad.

I don't know if you know how to do all the feature in iBooks or not but if chose the iBooks video it shows how to do the dictionary pop-up, notes and highlighting features in it...

http://www.apple.com/ipad/guided-tours/

...the other videos are very useful as well.

The iBooks tutorial will show you how to do the same things in Kindle as the two work very similarly.

mike jay (mikeaj) Another good writing app that is free...

mike jay (mikeaj) Quick video showing how to use Street View in the built in "Maps" app. He does not speak English but it's the best video I could find showing this. Watch it until he taps the little red icon and it switches to Street View. If you've never seen this it will blow your mind. It's hard to explain what it does but trust me, it is worth taking the time to learn how to do it. And it actually is very useful for finding a place you want to go to...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtC27U...

Couple of tips for using this app. When you have a map showing tap the little fold over on the bottom right of the screen. All the various settings are there.

And if you are getting directions from your current location always put in "C" in the starting location box and then tap in "current location" . Instead of having to type in where you are it will start you from where you are standing automatically.

Can you explain better what you mean by that?

I want to help but I am still not clear on what you mean.

message 23: by mike jay (last edited Mar 26, 2011 01:45PM) (new)

mike jay (mikeaj) I know I have made so many posts it may be overwhelming. I have all this stored in my various notes apps and I can cut the text and paste it here in seconds. It's therefore hard for me to spread them out of time. I want to get it all out.

But, I hope you take the time to do and learn what every post is showing at your own pace. They will really increase your enjoyment of your iPad. I'm not trying to be a "Mr. Know it All". I just happen to know it all, HaHa. It would take me ten years to show all the things the iPad can do. I have LOTS more info saved up that I can paste here over time.

And if there are questions anyone has I'll help if I can.

mike jay (mikeaj) ☻Bobbie☻ wrote: "Sorry I meant I have a lot of music in mp3 files on my computer I want them on my iPad too"

Oh duh! I should of got that! Are the songs in iTunes?

While I have this text cut...

Here is the owners manual specially for the iPad 2...

http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/i...

...after you open this it'll say "Open in iBooks", tap that of course. Then when you view it in iBooks you can search the entire thing by keyword and find what you are looking for lickety split. If the Open in iBooks icon disappears befor you can tap it tap the screen and it'll come back.

Still, not everything is in there. It'd be 300,000,000 million pages if it did.

Bobbie It didn't open to the book

mike jay (mikeaj) ☻Bobbie☻ wrote: "It didn't open to the book"

Tap it again, it will I am pretty sure. if not tell me and I'll tell you another way.

Is the music in iTunes you want to put on your pad?

I've noticed any PDF file does that sometimes on the iPad for some reason . But tapping it again always opens it.

message 32: by mike jay (new)

mike jay (mikeaj) If the music is already in iTunes you only need to sync - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1386 - your iPad and it'll be there. If not, you need to drag and drop the music file in to iTunes and then sync.

message 33: by Bobbie (new)

Bobbie I'll have to try that when I get home
I did email one to myself and it opened fine I just couldn't save it. I guess I have a lot to learn

Well, now I see for sure you'll have to drag and drop the music file in to iTunes and then sync. The above link will not help. I can help with the steps if your not familiar on how to do this.

Bobbie I'm not at home for the weekend so I'll have to try it Monday night but thanks

Bobbie Really with how popular iPad's are I'm really surprised this group isn't more active

message 37: by mike jay (new)

mike jay (mikeaj) ☻Bobbie☻ wrote: "Really with how popular iPad's are I'm really surprised this group isn't more active"

I was thinking the same thing. One of the reasons is surely that with the amount of groups here it's hard to find unless you think to do a keyword group search with "iPad" or something like that in it. And many people never think of it I'm sure. I know I didn't until just a few days ago and I've used this site on and off for a long time with another username account.

What would be good is to request the group be a "featured" group they do on the main page for certain lengths of time.

Also, we could join other groups and causually ask if there is people in it who use an iPad. Some group moderators get mad if you post a link to another group but if there are people who say they do you can "friend" them and then send them a private message about it.

I don't think it's good etiquette to request a group be featured without asking the moderator first. If the moderator is seeing this will you please post your thoughts about doing this? Thanks.

Also a moderator can add keywords to make it pop up with different ones. Like even "kindle", eReading, eBooks and so forth.

Bobbie I've been a mod of another group for about a year now. We have a secret status but we occasionally discuss devises. There is another iPad user that I know of and a few iPhone users, they have been very helpful. I guess because goodreads is primarily book related, it's not very popular unless it is about books

That sounds good. And have one topic for anything about the iPad other than eBooks.

If your group is still going I'd like to check it out if I may.

Shelley (ssuths) | 5 comments For the person who asked about mahjong, Shanghai Lite is basic but works fine, and it's free. It bears no resemblance to the real mahjong tile game (Asian or American) played with 4 people around a table.

My favorite free word games so far are Jumbline 2, Scramble CE, Lexulous (it says it's only an iphone app, but it works on iPad), Whirly Word, Spellstacker, Word Abacus and Words Free.

KenkenPro is a very fun variation on Sudoko, using a little math.

Astra Jigsaw is wonderful--it allows you to choose the number of pieces, whether they rotate or not, and their shape. There's a really nice free art collection, and when you've worked your way through that, you can buy a huge collection for just $3.99.

Tetris, Lineup2 and Trio are all falling blocks games that are fun, too.

I'm trying Big Oven for a recipe file/shopping list app, but I'm not sure I like it. Anyone have a better one out there?
