Old-Barbarossa Great idea for a group.
May I recommend a few from Scottish authors:
Nigel Tranter's The Wallace: a novel about the Wars Of Independance (this book covers circa 1296-1307), what Braveheart should have been about.
Ian Banks' The Wasp Factory: plain bonkers, dark humour and strange deaths.
Stevenson's The Master of Ballantrae A Winter's Tale: duality of man, sibling rivalry, set after the '45.

Silver It has been a while since I have read it, but The Kings of the Kingdom by A.J. Cronin was a marvelous and very interesting book.
